Real Traffic Data Compared to Google Estimates

I keep reading about people who write that they finally get to the top of Google but they don't see any traffic. I help run a site and here are some real traffic stats compared to Google keyword tool (GKT)

Keyword 1:

Broad Monthly Keyword According to GKT Searches: 33,100

Exact Monthly Keyword According to GKT Searches: 6,600

Position In Google: 4

Acutal Traffic Stats For August For that keyword: 327

Keyword 2:

Broad Monthly Keyword According to GKT Searches: 74,000

Exact Monthly Keyword According to GKT Searches: 9,900

Position In Google: 2

Acutal Traffic Stats For August For that keyword: 675

Moral of the story, don't pay too much attention to the google keyword tool!

Use it purely to estimate. If you get on within the top 5 positions for your keyword, take the google broad estimate and divide it by about 10. That will help to give you a more realistic idea of the amount of traffic you will receive.

Thanks

Thanks for the findings. You're right, it's best to use Google as a guide - actually, that goes for almost any keyword tool.

By the way, maybe you mean, divide Broad Monthly by 100, and not 10.

those numbers are pretty much the rule - I have had several sites make it to page one for a keyword and the traffic is almost nothing compared to the GKT. Well - maybe 1/100th of the GKT estimate.

Good information, I think this will help a lot of people, traffic is difficult to get, just because you have a good ranking doesn't mean people will click on your link. Your description carries weight also.
