How to grow a directory site?

I have built an online product directory site and looking for ways to grow it. As we enter the Information Overload IM Blackhole, I think its necessary to organize all the products out there.
I can't possibly keep track of every product and I'm looking to simplify and organize, but need ideas how to get people to post there.
Thank you for any input you can provide.

Why would you want to do that?

It seems to me that the best strategy for a directory site is to focus on a very specific and narrow niche. Then all you have to be concerned with are the products in that niche - not the millions of other products online that your audience is not concerned with.

The wider the net you cast, the more you have to deal with large, well-healed corporations that have huge marketing budgets.

When your directory focus is specific and narrow, organizing "all products" is simple and easy. When you become a more general and all-inclusive directory, the difficulty of managing your directory goes way up and its effectiveness usually way down.

When you serve a specific and well defined niche, your audience will be interested in everything you have to sell including advertising in your directory.
