What I have learnt is to do proper keyword research before getting
into any project. I have also learnt to devise a plan and stick to it
instead of chasing every money making opportunity that comes along.

I have also learnt not to spend money unless it is to purchase something
that I can use now to further my business.

It took a long time for all of this to sink in and I will admit that even now
I am guilty of straying sometimes.

Definitely my greatest lesson, has to be - make yourself focus on one particular thing at a time. If you focus at too many projects at once, you will almost certainly become stuck.

I make a list of everything I want to do in order, then cross them off.

A few that come to mind..30% or more of your efforts need to be focused on market and customer research, take action, keep focus, replicable systems are far more important and productive than the latest 'make money on google doing nothing' trick, the money is in the effective use of the back end, segment your content and segment your customers for hyper responsiveness, keyword intention is more important than keyword volume...and of course keep it simple.

ok. so the take action is the most important,
and then in my case take action again, to fix your first action.
then you take action again to fix what you repair action did.
but now the third action has caused the first action to bomb out, so you need to take action again.
    and again
    and again...

Although I'm a newbie to IM and SEO, I consider myself pretty successful in life (although it took a long time and a lot of hard work). As many of you know, some of the best lessons are ones that took a long time to learn.

I'll agree with the take action part... but, that's just the first step in a journey of a thousand miles.

The most important part is STAY AT IT... and don't give up. Perseverance is the true key to success - you don't have to be be the smartest... you don't have to have the most resources... you don't even have to be the most motivated (although this helps a lot when getting started).

Set a goal, get started, and never give up!

I've learned that if you have the wrong mindset you won't be successful no matter how many Internet or courses you buy.

Unfortunately, most people have the wrong mindset and that's why most people fail at Internet marketing.

Having the right mindset makes everything just start to fall in place.

The greatest lesson was when i learned not to be such a perfectionist. When i started i could spend a month on just creating a site because i didn't like certain aspects of the template and so on. Of course, i didn't make any money by doing that. So i decided to just start marketing my sites anyway even though i didn't like them, which of course, made me money. So yeah.. don't be such a perfectionist, it doesn't have to be perfect to get started.

You're in it alone! Realize this early and save ALOT of time. You can learn from people but don't think they have your interest in mind. Only YOU DO!

DO IT NOW! ala Napoleon Hill. Don't wait to do stuff...Just put it out there and see if it works.

Build a reluctant hero persona and dont worry about the keyword crap! Google organic does not = buyers. Having people that turn to you as an expert does.

Understand the basics of marketing as well as the lessons of IM. Learn what target marketing is and how to reach the maximum target for minimum money and effort.

    Adjust quickly!

Lastly, spend time each day learning and improving.

    The Lesson:

    1. Learn from people who are already doing it (a mentor).
    2. Take from them correct knowledge or information.
    3. Take consistent and persistent action on applying that knowledge.

In other words... True Knowledge + Consistent and Persistent Action = SUCCESS (having a plan of action really helps too)

    The Formula:

    1. Find a group of hungry people.
    2. Survey them and find-out exactly what they want (might be what they're already buying).
    3. Get in front of them and give it to them!
    4. Capture the lead and turn them into raving fans.
    5. Rinse and repeat.

It took me a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (oh yeah, and let's not forget TIME) to learn this.

Lots and lots of great bits of advice given so far, I'll try to add some value here.

Take action has been mentioned a lot, and is extremely important...But I believe that's incomplete advice.

It should be Take (or cause by hiring, outsourcing, etc...) Focused Action! Create a Plan, launch yourself at it with all the focus and energy you can muster, and pay close attention to what happens.

Only by knowing what you did (or didn't do) to cause a certain thing to happen, can you adjust accordingly.

The other biggest lesson... Get yourself a Mentor... Not lots of them, find someone successful and emulate that person. He/She has already laid out a plan for you, it's up to you to follow it and learn from it.

The last bit... Never, Ever, Ever Give up! Too many people quit when they are on the verge of success, only to see someone else pick up their idea and take off with it.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

    Rog

P.S. As Calvin Coolidge once said "Persistence and Determination are Omnipotent!"

    Hi Ronald
The greatest marketing lesson I have ever learned is to start taking action immediately. However great may be the idea ,you are not going to benefit from it until you execute it and make it a concrete reality.

In the beginning of my IM career ,I used to be a passive spectator, used to be amazed at the income claims and used to fill my hard drive with info overload.Slowly and slowly I started promoting other people products and I was making a decent income from it.

About four months ago I read an eye opening report by a leading marketer. It was about creating your six figure business empire by selling short reports.I was instantly hooked to the idea and created my first product within the next 3 days(It was a simple 15 page report).

That product generated $2800 in one week.Since then I have created many info products ,got some JV partners and now earn a healthy four figure income per day.

The other two very important things are:

    1)Provide Value:
When you create your products always try to overdeliver(Especially in the first few).Price them low($5-$10 is enough) and share easy ,applicable info.Your rapport with your prospects will play a huge role in your future success.

    2)Get some JV partners:
When you create your own product, try to get some JV partners. No one has ever created a huge income without people leverage.Your JV partners can make or break your launch so provide them
your best possible attention.Once you get some subscribers on your list, try to increase it rapidally using JV adswaps.

Find one method that you can make money with and scale it up. That's the key to this business. Newbies all make the mistake (me included) of jumping on the "latest and greatest" and never stick with one thing long enough to see a real profit. Just pick one method and work on that till your eyes bleed and you'll make a lot of money.

Here are some general marketing (and life) lessons...

      Mindset
      • Most of the problems are in your head
      • You stand in the way of success more than anyone or anything else
      • Your beliefs will govern everything you do in life
      • Stop caring about what others will think. Remember, they have their own limiting beliefs and will try to push them on you. You must ignore them.
      • If something isn't working, do something else!
      • If something IS working, keep doing it! You don't stop going back to the well when there is still water in it.
      Take Action
      • The best time to get things started is yesterday. Today is the next best time. So get moving! Do whatever it is you have to do to get work done and get something going. Do something. Anything.

      Why People Buy
      • People buy based on emotions and then justify it with logic
      • People buy what they want, not what they need
      • To avoid pain or gain pleasure. Note, most people are programmed to move away from pain moreso than toward pleasure/gain.
      Why People Don't Buy
      • They don't want it - Not much you can do about it
      • They don't believe you - You need to build trust
      • They don't have the money - This is usually bs
      Failure
      • It's part of the process.
      • Failure is feedback. So fail fast.
      • Learn from your failures and use the new information on the next go around.
      Time Management
      • Everyone has 24 hours in a day. So don't use the "I don't have time" excuse. "I didn't make the time" is more honest.
      • There is no shortage of time, only a confusion of priorities.
      • Stop checking yor email 256 times a day
      • Don't start your day off by checking and replying to emails. If you do, you are starting your day off on other peoples schedules.
      • Set deadlines. And make them shorter dadlines rather than long ones. Thank parkinsons law for this.
      • Apply the 80/20 principle to everything in your life.
      • "Don't have the time", make it by turning off your TV. Especially if you watch the news. It's poison.
      Pricing
      • You set your prices. Not your competitors or customers.
      • Live by price and you die by price
      • You need to increase your value. If people don't want to pay, it's because you're not delivering enough value for the money you're charging.

      Miscellaneous
      • Always have a clear call to action in your marketing
      • Remember, it's NEVER about you. All people care about is what's in it for them. Remember this in your marketing.
      • If you're not growing you're dying
      • School is never out for the pro
      • It's what you learn after you know it all that counts
      • You need to give people a reason to buy from you instead of your competitors or not buying at all. This is where a USP comes helps.
      In A Nutshell

There is no secret. Take action. Test. Make adjustments. Test again. Keep doing this. When it's all said and done, it' nothing more than taking action and testing. You will fail, and probably a lot. But if you stay focused, keep taking action, keep testing, and keep learning from every mistake, it's inevitable.....you will succeed.

This is just a tip of the iceberg. I could literally write a book on this stuff.

Just an addition to that....if you can find a great mentor or coach that you really trust. That has helped me tremendously! "Just believe in yourself"..."take action"...nice sentiments, but they're not going to make you money unless you apply smart, effective tactics and keep HAMMERING on the tactics that work for you.

I could believe in myself and take action towards becoming a professional basketball player, but I highly doubt the L.A. Lakers would ever take notice

Best internet marketing lesson? Use "bribes" (cool free giveaways) to rapidly build a mailing list of interested buyers. Then, have an autoresponder in place that has lots of messages that are just as well-crafted as the copy on your sales page.

I love it when I see a sale come through on my site, from a person who signed up for my list FIVE MONTHS ago. The fact that they purchased means that for the past five months, they've been keeping an eye on my emails, and one day they finally decided, "ok, I can't hold out any longer, I have to buy this!"

Check the bottom link in my signature box to see how I set a squeeze page that convinces 30-40 people a day to sign up. Good luck Warriors!

Never send traffic to a sales page (especially and affiliate page)

Always send traffic to a squeeze page.

then send your sales page to your traffic.

Well, everyone else has already said "Take Action" and that is no doubt the number one because without it you will go nowhere, but you should have a map of some kind...

    Here's a few more:

1.) Everything you need to know to become successful is free, but everything is not obvious.

2.) Don't waste your time on forums too much.

3.) Do something, even if it is a little thing, every day.

4.) You know more than you think you do, you have just forgotten.

5.) Other people wish they had what you have, never forget how blessed you are!

6.) Other than Death, there is no obstacle too big that you cannot find a way around it. (and for that "one" obstacle, I know a guy...)

    1. Decide what you are going to do.
    2. Make a plan to accomplish it. (Model others if necessary)
    3. Stay Focused on the plan.
    4. Make adjustments when necessary.
    5. Don't quit.

I guess the foundation of all of this, is to make sure whatever you decide to do is ultimately going to take you where you want to go. Because after all your hard work, precise focus, overcoming failure & discouragement, more hard work, more focus, you want to be sure that it will ultimately lead to a desired outcome.

Just get started and don't try to do everything and certainly don't buy everybody's course. If you haven't taken any action on a previous one, you most likely won't take action on the next one.

When it comes to buying the classes you really have to be careful. I paid $2,000.00 for a product launch class and really got ripped off. All i really got was a mess of written material, phone calls to listen to and then set up in a group for phone calls and it's become a social group with 2 or 3 people instead of 8 that it is suppose to be. i don't even recieve e-mails from the guru that sold the class. For newbie's don't get suckered into these classes. They really don't want to mess with anyone unless they are going to make them look good.

Concentrate your energies on becoming good at the difficult things. The difficult things are:

    1. Traffic
    2. Rankings
    3. Links
    4. Clicks

Work ceaselessly to achieve a high level of skill at the above 4 things. if you get good at them, then you can happily outsource the rest. Everything else will fall into place by itself. Don't get distracted into side issues, the above 4 things are what you need to get good at.

Probably the biggest thing I have learned is that IM should be a get rich forever scheme not a get rich quick!!

Success doesn't happen overnight. There are too many and myself included at one time think you can buy a product implement it the next day and start making loads of cash the next.

You become older and wiser in this game.

Don't wait around for the mysteriously big "secrets" to be revealed and don't assume that everyone else knows so much more than you do before you take action.

I lost $500.00 as a very new beginner in google adwords and it scared me so much that I took a break and looked into a real estate venture. Somehow, I got back into IM and ran across 2 genuine marketers that truly want to help others and started up again. Everyone pretty much started out learning on their own so just dive in but get comfortable with your skills first.

I absolutely love this business and everyday there is something new for us all to learn.

Good luck to all the newbies!

That's an easy one: ignore the impulse and advice to just "do what you love." How many newbies has that lame advice sent down the path to failure?

One caveat: if what you love is making money, then by all means do what you love.

That building a rock solid foundation, both personally and financially, is critical to long-term success and fulfillment. If I would have taken the time to build my foundation ten years ago, when I first got started online, it wouldn't have taken me nearly 18 months to break $1,000 a month consistently. Today you could take away all my assets and I'd be back here today in less than a year.

I have learned many many things...

      - I used to study alot, think and dwell on things without taking action. I learned to DO more. Now I do things at least 2 hours a day.

      - Starting a website in a way too competitive niche. One of my first websites was about "games"(huge market & killer competition). I have learned to target micro niches/low competition.

      - I have learned to sell/promote products that have a bigger price tag on it. I used to sell/promote digital products that cost only $1,- $10,-. I sold quite a few but it didn't make me rich.

      - That there are 2 kinds of people on the internet: information seekers and buyers.

      - Emphasis on fancy graphics without spending time on search engine optimzation = no visitors. (this was a hard lesson I learned)

      - That desperate buyers(where did I hear that before?) niches can make the most money.

      - That a niche/keyword has to have commercial value. That Adword advertisers have to be present or else it may be a sign that no one is willing to buy.(profit potential)

      - that there have to be affiliate products present for a certain niche.

      - target keywords with traffic.

      - be unique and write quality content!

      - do not spam. contribute useful comments.

The list is endless...I love internet marketing!
