Email marketing vs social media marketing

Hello everyone,

I have a small company and a limited budget, so I'd like to know where should I spend my marketing $$ first- email marketing or social media marketing?
Which of these 2 is the most efficient for open rates, conversions, and sales?

Thank you. Simona

    email marketing
Please explain how you get traffic from email marketing unless and until you put subscribers on your list.

Social media marketing is a good way to get subscribers on your email list.

    Adwords (google)
or Facebook is the way to go.

    I personally use FB to;

    1. Drive traffic to my website
    2. Convert visitors to email subscribers
    3. Convert email subscribers to customers.

If you're deciding if you should build a following on social media vs an email list, I'd go with email list.

But generally, like Brent said, we drive traffic from social media to our mailing lists.

If you want some stats I've got them for you.

Let's say you have 10,000 'likes' on your facebook page - the reach is decreasing each year, so much that I'm hearing a 3% engagement rate isn't out of the ordinary... with anything above 1% being considered good.

On the other hand, with email marketing the average open rate is around 30%, so if you have 10,000 subscribers you'll get your message in front of 3,000 people.

Plus, with email once you have acquired the traffic you own it - which means you can promote your site, or whatever else you want, as often as you like, practically for free.

And you can do all kinds of cool stuff with email, like segment your subscribers through tags and behavioural responses that make your emails more targeted and ultimately boost conversion rates.

Personally, if it was me; spend your budget on FB ads that send people to either a squeeze page

Or, if you feel like they need to be warmed up a bit first,

....send them to a blog post that has your FB pixel, then follow up later with another FB ad that sends them to a squeeze page.

Email marketing, but you still have to drive people to your website in order to build that email list. I personally like forums, content marketing and adwords.

If you are brand spanking new, then I suggest you use your money for tools like 1
    1- Aweber email software ($19/mo)
    2- Webhosting From $10/mo
3- WordPress Blog (free with the right hosting)
4- Lead capture pages (free WP plugin or platforms like Leadpages, Clickfunnel and Instapage Builder ect...(free to $37/mo and up.

Email marketing is NOT a traffic generation strategy. It's a form of communication between you and a list of email subscribers.

You can begin driving traffic using (1) social media strategy into your site for free but this is a process that will need consistent action from you daily for 3 months (giving value every day) right up to a full year and onwards.

You can use paid trade if you don't want to spend time and energy on social media but paid traffic still requires a learning curve that will need consistent $$$ just to learn (1) form of paid strategy.

Even with paid traffic you probably won't earn much (or anything at all) in your first 3 months if you are brand new to marketing.

Rory, thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it. what if I pay someone who actually knows what they're doing to create and run fbook ad campaigns for me? would that be the fastest way to build my email list?

To get traffic from email marketing, you have to get people to subscribe to your mailing list. This shouldn't be done by getting lists from a list broker. You can use social media to drive people to the squeeze page for your mailing list - but once you stop - the traffic stops.

With email, the traffic keeps coming day after day. That's in the form of new subscribers, backend sales, referrals, coaching clients, etc. And if you're going to use social media, i dont suggest direct linking to your offer. Send them to your squeeze page, and let the email marketing process convert them into customers.

Dear Simop999, if you wants more traffic and customers on your website then Social Media Marketing is best strategy. We use Email marketing only communicating or sending details, documents etc. So Social Media Marketing is best way to most efficient for open rates, conversions and sales.

Social media marketing is a good way to create brand awareness among young and old all around the world.
Email marketing is one of the easiest ways to reach your targeted audience. But one of the disadvantages of this marketing is that customers often delete the emails before even reading them.

i do both, but buyers do like email marketing.

Social do like lots of things, but you got to get them in the mood and entertain, and give short snippets. Gary vee is a master of this, he gives quality content and short videos to get peoples attention.

Both can drive a chit ton of traffic and generate sales in the long run.

Any business should initially go with Social Media Marketing instead of Email marketing, which results in gaining subscribers for further campaigns as well as increase your online presence called "Brand Awareness".
It also drives relevant social traffic to your website.

You need to do some homework before trying to cover "all social media platforms", something borderline impossible to do. Covering the major platforms would still be a full time job.

Better to look at which platforms your target audience use. If your ideal customers don't use Snapchat, being on Snapchat is a waste of resources. (Just an example).

One market I serve is heavily on Facebook, so that's where I would concentrate my efforts.

Another uses LinkedIn extensively, so I will be focusing there when I roll out.

As for your either/or question, without a doubt the most successful strategy I've seen is using social media to build a list, and email marketing to sell.

last 5 years I been doing $400 dollar days, and it all boils down to building curiosity and EMAIL marketing in particular.

The frustrating thing is I spend lots of money testing other stuff, but I just seem to have a nack for email, and email marketing. STill cannot find anything as powerful. I mean I do like fb, but still think EMAIL MARKETING is powerful done the right way.

Both - Email marketing and social media marketing have got their own importance in traffic and lead generation.

However, for a start up company, you should start with Social Media Marketing and when you have some database, you could invest in email marketing for lead generation.

Some Tips for Social Media Marketing:

    LINKEDIN MARKETING MANAGEMENT
    · LinkedIn profile optimization (with a set of specific keywords)

    · Blog writing/publishing on your services

    · Promotion of your LinkedIn profile and business services in targeted groups (upto 50)

    · Business networking in targeted segment/category - Commercial Real Estate Agents

    · Sending thanks or follow-up messages to new connections

    · Endorsing business professionals to get noticed

    · Asking for recommendations to increase profile visibility

    · Posting small updates daily in all groups to get noticed

    · Sending marketing messages to prospects to generate business leads

    · Sharing some attractive/motivational quotes/wall papers to get noticed

    FACEBOOK MARKETING MANAGEMENT
    · Posting small updates daily to get noticed

    · Wall paper posting

    · Cross marketing (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, G+)

    · News sharing of your Industry

    · Sharing of your YouTube videos on your Facebook page

    · Social networking with prospects

    · Exchanging messages with prospects/ Chatting

    · Joining relevant groups and regular postings

    · Sharing some attractive/motivational quotes/wall papers to get noticed

    TWITTER MARKETING MANAGEMENT
    · Posting small updates daily with hash tags keywords to get visibility

    · Cross marketing (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, G+)

    · Sending thanks messages to new followers

    · Following prospects on Twitter

    · Posting small updates to get notified

    GOOGLE+ MARKETING MANAGEMENT
    · Posting small updates daily to get noticed

    · Wall paper designing/posting

    · Cross marketing (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, G+)

    · News sharing of your Industry

    · Business Networking

    Hope, that helps.

Impossible question for anyone to answer. You're comparing two very different strategies with different purposes.

Not only that, every niche is different, every business is different, every marketing campaign will be different. What marketing approach works for one business has no bearing on how it will work for you because your circumstances, resources, products, budgets, and audience are not the same.

Marketing is not a head-to-head competition with anyone else.

It's an exercise in which you attempt to satisfy the needs of your target audience, then you test, track, and tweak your results to optimize the dollars you spend for the return you produce. The better you do that, the more profitable you are.

    What's a limited budget?
What niche is the business in?
    Where are there customers?
    etc?

It's hard to really help, most of these questions are very generic without much detail behind them.

You should spend your budget on driving targeted traffic from Facebook to your landing page so that you can build your email list.

You can start with a test budget of $10 a day for each ad and keep 3-5 running at all times.

Find which ones are working for you and cut the ones that aren't.

If you want repeat sales - email marketing is the clear winner here.

Both are POWERFUL, but Email marketing will continue to be the best for years to come because social media sites can go down anytime, but emails will last for years & you will be able to continue contacting prospects for years to come.

I always say list goes first. Focus on creating good offer for people to subscribe. Than do the advertising. It doesn't matter where you advertise - just ask yourself where your prospects are.

Currently, most people are engaged with social media more in place of emails. And if your business is new then branding is important for it so as per that social media marketing remains the best.

Still both social media marketing and email marketing have their own pros and cons. Email marketing helps to get better ROI, higher conversion & click rate. Whereas social media marketing helps the most in branding, to get higher engagement rate etc. But if both works together then your business will get success in term of conversions and sales.

I've been a professional content marketer for 5+ years. It's been a big learning curve and there's no end in sight.

If you're brand new, get good at the MAIN social platform your market hangs out on. Focus on just one at a time.

Build a good audience there, and get a sense of what they want to have/know/problem they want to solve. Interact, ask questions, have fun.

Then set up a lead magnet and lead gen funnel and announce it on your social platform. You'll get WARM subscribers and they'll be more likely to buy.

You can also sell right from many platforms, but I prefer to get them on a list either way.

    Hope that helps.
