Is it a good idea to pre-sell a course a week before launch?

I have a list of about 120 people who have purchased a product from me in the past.

I want to cross-sell a related online course to this list, but I haven't finished recording all of the material yet.

I'd like to gauge interest and perhaps even make some money upfront by pre-selling the course to the list at a discount.

Should I do this or should I wait until the whole product is available for use?

Sure you can do this...you may want to give them DRIP access to the first one or two lessons if they are done to wet their appetite. I have pre-sold ebooks before with "first-mover" deal and have pre-sold full training courses inside membership sites where access is only made available week by week.

    JB's comment is excellent.

I'd just like to add that the time for "gauging interest" from your buyer's list regarding creating a course you're going to offer them is way before you are within "a week before launch." How do you know that your course is really what your customers want and will buy if you haven't already gauged their interest before proceeding with the course? Just a thought for the future for anyone creating a product or service.

The best to you in this effort.

That's a great point. I'm just mirroring the models of my competitors. They all offer a front-end digital product, followed by paid tutorials and courses for how to use that digital product to its greatest potential.

    Sure, why not?
You might want to work on building your list first, 120 is a little smaller to be promoting to in terms of email. (IMO at least)

120 isn't very many by any stretch, but it's worth mentioning that these are 120 highly qualified leads, for whom a course is the next logical step.

I'm still quite new to internet marketing, so if I'm able to get even 10-20 sales out of this effort then I'll be ecstatic.

Yes. In fact...You should try to presell every product that you are going to promote. (whether an an affiliate offer or your own product)

You can totally do this by enabling drip access where you only show them the first month of the course.

While they are going through that you can go and create the rest of the course.
