How to determine competitors during market research?

One question I like to ask myself is "who are my direct competitors?"

It's tough as hell to answer for me, being new to this. Yet, It seems like everyone can answer the question off the bat, without hesitation.

I would say Google it, but you'll end up with huge corporations like ESPN, when you want to target let's say way smaller competitor first.

It seems like there's a tool you use for this, and you look at a certain metric. I'm honestly not sure which one (metric or tool) to use. There's a ton of information, tools, and metrics to sort through. If I use something like SEM RUSH, or SpyFu what am I looking for? Start with keyword research to get my answer?

Any insights would be awesome.

If you want to find your direct competitors, it's actually pretty easy to do. Here is my 3 step process for finding them:

    1. Type in your product or service into Google
    2. Go to the top 2-3 results, look at what they are selling, and see if it's the same as yours
    3. If it is, go to similarsites.com and type in the URL of the tops results. Now you have a list of all the top copmetitors in your industry.

It's pretty easy to do once you know how. You can also download their chrome extension which makes it even easier.
