OK to use a generic website name?

I have several computer-related niche ideas, and I was wondering if I should put them on the same website. For example, if I have some pages under the niche "buy cheap laptops", and my domain name is "megacomputers.com" - if it is okay to have the pages at:

megacomputers.com/buycheaplaptops
megacomputers.com/laptopsforcheap
megacomputers.com/wantacheaplaptop

In these examples, my main page name of "megacomputers.com" is fairly generic. Or is it much better to have one site per niche idea, like:

buycheaplaptops.com/buycheaplaptops
buycheaplaptops.com/laptopsforcheap
buycheaplaptops.com/wantacheaplaptop

I'm new, so I was hoping to start simple, and the first example seemed more simple.

    That's not so easy to decide.

    1. One generic site for a lot of computer related topics will be easier to promote and SEO than many smaller sites. So it will be easier to attract traffic to that site, it's like a kind of authority site for 'Computer'.

    2. The more focused sites seem more attractive for the targeted customer once he finds it. Your example 'buycheaplaptops' contains a clear benefit for a tightly targeted group. Now if you manage to get targeted traffic, that could outsell the generic site.

    This is just how it works for me . I am in no way saying this is best for everyone .

    I have done it both ways . The generic site with pages named for the long tails have always worked better for the fact that these sites have better page rank in the long run.

    My newest site is mega generic to the point that I was a little worried about it . It is doing very well because I am sticking to the main theme with all my sub pages .

      I believe there is nothing wrong using generic website name.

        Yeah, I see no problem using generic website names ... also ... you might want to try adding mini-sites on subdomains to your primary domain. It's something I'm currently testing out to see if it helps me with targeted traffic a bit more.
