Shopify : Is it possible to make money from the get go?

I need advisors who have made money from Shopify and dropshipping with Aliexpress.

1. What can we expect at the beginning? No sales for a few days or weeks? Or if the Facebook advertisement is right, we can expect to see some results, even if it is one sale.

2. Why should anyone buy from my Shopify site at a markup instead of buying straight from Aliexpress?

3. How much should I invest in the shop before I cut loss and quit?

Appreciate all valuable advice from people who have made it and are still doing it.

  • 1. Depending on how big of a net you cast and how many people you reach, you are able to make sales in the first week. It is very doable if you have put an intelligent action into motion. I recommend starting out by posting in Facebook Groups and other areas where people are basically 'pre-sold' on your niche already.

    2. A lot of people aren't aware of AliExpress which is why they will agree to a mark up cost. Additionally, people prefer to buy from Shopify because the long shipping periods a lot of AliExpress products have makes people nervous.

    3. You can be up and running successfully with less than $100 investment in my opinion. More money comes into play when your audience is harder to find. If you have a broad niche it is cheaper because you have more outlets to promote and it gives you more flexibility.

correct me if Im wrong but isn't Aliexpress just a wholesaler? Or am I mistaken?

Isn't better to go straight to the supplier so you have more room to mark up?

Let me tell you a secret about the internet. Very few people do comparison shopping across multiple sites. I'm assuming you're not selling cars or big ticket items.

My point is, If I'm buying shoes and I find them on a site, I don't care If I can save $5 dollars by comparison shopping for 5 hours. I'll just buy the shoes and be done with it.

BTW, that's a risky bet using Aliexpress since they sometimes ship directly from China. It might take a month for a buyer to see a product shipped to their door, which would be a horrible buyer experience and possible refunds.

And now for the voice of reason:

I can't think of a better way to start a business that is mostly out of your control. The name of the game is satisfied, repeat customers.

Think about how that fits with your proposed method.

    1. Getting sales in your first week is possible, but it really depends on your marketing. Focus on the long term solution, which will give you a relatively stable and constant income.

    2. Why would anybody buy from you and not Aliexpress? Because they came to your site and they trust you, not Aliexpress. A lot of people don't trust Aliexpress because they are from China. They don't believe that their item will arrive in the mail.
THIS is why you must build reputation and trust with your customers. You have to show them that you are a reliable seller and that you WILL deliver.
It may be hard at start. Try to build a brand and get loyal customers. At the beginning, a lot of customers won't trust you. But if you show them that people actually buy from you, then they will give you their money. You can achieve this with a simple app which shows the most recent orders (get it here). I would recommend you to add a few fake orders in the app so that your customers will think that you actually got some orders. It will give you a bump start

    3. How much to invest? It depends on what you are trying to sell. Let's assume that you will mostly sell items under $ 20. You can start with a small budget, $100 to $500, just to see how the market responds. Then adjust a few things here and there and sell more. It depends how much you have and how much are you willing to risk. Leave the business you don't make even one sale after 500$ spent. I would probably stop at around $1500. But still, depends on what you are selling and how is the market responding.

    1. This is totally up to you on how you drive traffic to your shop and the quality of traffic. It's impossible for us to know how your skills are in this area.

    2. Figure out what works best for you. Knowledge is power.

    3. Depends on your shop, niche, how you are driving traffic, etc.

I owned a shopify site and I may say it's a profitable business if you are willing to spend your time on it. Majority of websites built today using shopify are focusing on dropshipping scheme so you need to be ready for a very competitive market.

The key to this model is finding an impulse buy product - something that somebody says "wow, I want that and have to have it now!" and doesn't think about it too much. Remember, NOBODY goes to Facebook looking for something to buy. You need to capture their attention with something that they simply cannot resist buying. This means things like belts and wallets and shoes are unlikely to be very successful unless there is something pretty darned special about them (like the belt makes you look 20 pounds lighter, the wallet has some sort of "never lose it" feature, the shoes make you jump one foot higher).

How do you find those products on AliExpress? I guess you need to scroll through every single product category until you find something that makes you say "wow, I want that and have to have it now!"

but do you think the impulse buy strategy only applies to dropshipping from Aliexpress or does it apply to ecommerce in general? i'm thinking that even if you fulfill the orders yourself, you still have to market your products the same way since there's so much competition both online and offline. unless you're amazon or ebay, or unless you have exclusive products, you can ONLY sell impulse buy products to be successful.

Thank you so much for the information! What I am looking for is a company that will do dropshipping from the USA or Europe. I am nervous about using Aliexpress. I am even thinking about going to China to check out the products to make sure it's a good quality products I can sell on my e-commerce store.

AliExpress is not the only place to get products from. In fact, it is probably the worst but everybody here seems to think it is great because it is easy. Easy is seldom the recipe for success.

If you intend on selling brand name items, contact the actual brands and see if they will dropship for you. If not, see if they have large buyers or distributors they could hook you up with that often do dropship. That's the way you get real products from reliable companies at good margins and shipped quickly.

  • 1- everything takes time sir, you have to be paitent. sometime people got successful in their first try and sometime they never.so never lose hope & keep trying.

2-Bcoz People Dont Know About Aliexpress and secondly One Niche Store Is better Than a Whole Market place.

3- The More You Invest, The more Product You Test From Ad Campaigns & will generate more sales.

Because most people don't know about Aliexpress, and if they do, they don't know what Shipping option to select to get their products quickly.

Also, if they see a product in a Facebook ad...Why would they assume it is a product from Aliexpress? They won't.
