How to have website removed?

I have a client who just purchased a retail business which includes a website that has old information on it. The problem is since this business has been sold multiple times before, no one knows how to contact the website registrant.

I tried contacting the registrant via email and phone # found through whois but no luck. I also sent a DMCA notice to their host which is Hostgator and never got a reply. I don't want this website up because it has misleading information about hours/services and causes confusion for the customers.

Any suggestions?

    Your client should have the credentials for the domain registrar, without that it is not going to be straightforward to prove ownership of the domain and get it transferred to himself.

    Sounds like your client does not have the credentials to the domain hosting, do you know if the hosting account uses cPanel or if the website is build on a CMS such as WordPress?

      It's built on WordPress. I'm not sure about Cpanel. It looks like registration was just renewed. The last time I checked Whois, it said registration was due to expire. I checked later and saw that it was registered for another year.

    have you/your client used the "forgotten password" link on the WP login screen? that should post a link to reset the password to the email address used on the WP Admin.

    You can check if it cPanel by going to https:// domain name:2083
