There is so much stuff available out there and right here on the forum this question is impossible to answer. What type of internet marketing are you interested in?

Are you a total beginner trying to figure out what business model to follow?

Do you have already have a business and are looking for information on how to get visitors to your website?

Where do you want to start? Do you have any website ideas already in mind? Why do you want to get into Internet marketing? What are your interests? What are your skills? Do you know how to build a website? Can you write well? Do you have a budget, or do you need to start with little or no investment?

Answer those questions, and people may be able to better give you pointers for a direction to go and, consequently, point you to specific threads or sites that may help you.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

no i dont have any ideas currently. just wanted to learn about the basics of internet marketing first and then i can start brainstorming about what ideas might work.

i want to get into internet marketing because i have a year to kill with no job or school or bills so i can devote all my time to it.

i don't really have any specific interests that i am planning to focus on. poker and fitness could be possibilities but im open to researching new things.

i know html and have some programming experience. i can write well when i need to. im planning on starting with little to no investment. would i be able to start on 50 bucks?

So, you have time and writing skills and want to start with 50 dollars. That being the case, you might want to consider the bum marketing method. There are a number of threads in this forum on the topic, which you can find by searching.

Here are three to get you started:

When searching for threads on bum marketing, make sure to enclose it in quotes in the search field, like this:

            "bum marketing"

Otherwise, the search feature ignores bum as too small a word and returns every thread that mentions marketing, which is about every thread in here.

One site I can recommend that covers everything from affiliate marketing, seo to product creation is #1 Affiliate Marketing Training Portal | Affilorama (not affiliated).

It's free to join and has really great information and videos. Plus they have lots of interview recordings with some of the leading experts in these fields.

    Hope that helps,
    -Brad

Presonally I've found SEObook.com to be a great resource. I don't know if you are into the whole SEO thing but if you are or just want more info on it I would check out his blog and his past posts - there are some real gems there.

Starting a business is not easy specially which so much information out there. I started in 1999 and start continue to learn. I found SEObook a great resource as well. I checked affiliorama and looks pretty good. I think the most important part is to decide your business model and provide value to your readers. If they visit your blog you want to make sure they stay there for more than 10 seconds. I found out the best way is to provide your readers with great content. Good luck to you.

You've gotten some great advice already.

I'm going to share a couple thoughts on the route I would take if I had to do it over. If you don't understand everything in the tips below - that's OK. You don't need to, nor do I expect you to. You can just start at step #1.

1.) Affiliate marketing via free traffic first - The Bum Marketing resources earlier in this thread are a great start

      - Learn good keyword research / niche research at this stage. Begin getting a feeling for how the "flow" of the web works. You'll be tempted by a lot of models at this point. Stick to the plan.

      - Learn Basic on page optimization

      - Another good foot to start out on here is begin tracking clicks. you can do this for free with url shorteners like tiny url. Another interesting shortener with added traffic benefit is stumble upons new system.

2.) Affiliate marketing via your own domain and free traffic - a step up in investment from bum marketing

      - Apply your foundational skills to your own domain: Pick a niche, determine 10 - 15 pages of content to build based on keywords.

      - This is also a techie step up. You should familiarize yourself with a site building system here (wordpress is the way to go in my opinion). Learn the "media' with with you work. You don't have to build it yourself, but you should know what you expect out of it if you outsource it. (plugins, look of the site, etc)

      - Step up the TRACKING at this point. Get involved tracking your conversions down to the keyword. You'll be well prepared for the next step

3.) #2 + paid traffic dabbeling (is that a word?) - PPC is a good place to start for paid traffic.

4.) By this time you'll have very good experience and a better idea on what direction you want to go in.

      There's a common thread here:
      - Follow a plan
      - Research
      - Traffic
      - Tracking

That ended up being longer than I expected

Well, I'm a listbuilder who promotes affiliate products.

The number 1 skill you can learn is listbuilding hands down, it's how
    you build an asset.

It's the difference between flipping a house for profit and hold on to
it to gain appreciation and rent out for income.

The smart ones hold on to their property, while the flippers regret not
    keeping their homes sooner.

    "Free" route...
Place articles at ezinearticles, re-use at Squidoo and Hubpages. Set up Blogger blogs. Point links to your squeezepage... give out a free report... build your list... promote products. ~everything FREE
Even PDF reports can be created for free - use Openoffice!
You can use Blogger to set up your squeeze page with the right template.
But to build a list you will need Aweber... not free
Possible workround is to use Gmail... set up autoresponder at Labs to send link to your PDF report.
Where to store your PDF? - use mediafire -
But before all of that do some research... into the niche you want to promote.
Sell what sells. Just do it better and more than everyone else to get to the top of the pile.
All info on making money is in the forum... no need to spend money on how to make money ebooks!!
Personally I would get a job... so you have some outside contact and you get a lot more ideas.

I've never looked at seobook but was a member of afilorama for a few months.

I've been in a similar situation to you. I've basically had all this year to explore research ponder learn get confused and go back to the start again.

"Find what excites you and make chooses from a place of inspiration" ... this is where the results come from.

Whilst I'm not making much at this stage, I've got a long term plan now (that has only recently formulated) after six months of playing and learning, processing and reading.

OMG there is a lot of reading to do !

I've actually found the trickiest area for me is finding products that I want to support.

You need to learn and be prepared to learn. Affliate Classroom 2 is a good starting point. Try to tackle only one thing at a time. Dont be tempted to jump around to all the new courses and products that come out.

While its good to get new information, to many different courses will fill your head with to many ideas and you wont be able to get anything done.

    Welcome to the forum!

    There's some helpful information here.

I would also suggest you find someone who is doing what you want to do and model your business after them. Whether it's a poker or fitness site, there are some great websites in these niches kicking butt. Study their sites, get on their mailing lists, and watch how they operate.

    Good luck,
    Peggy
