I'm not saying forget about branding, but slapping up a cheap or free logo could be worse for your image than no logo at all.

I'd wait until the business is making enough to be able to afford a professional logo designer.

No I've never used photoshop but i am currently installing it. Im creating an online affiliate website and I'm trying to test the site out before i invest money in a logo. I do plan on getting it professionally done later on, but for right now i would like to just get the site up and running. There is this tendency to put a lot of effort into logos. With the examples I am about to point to... Yes there has been a lot of effort and expense in developing these logos, BUT there is a clear pattern that develops.

If you look at some online giants, and their logos such as; Walmart, New York Times, Quick Sprout, Warrior Forum, Google, etc etc etc they ALL have pretty basic text logos. ( Warrior Forum being the most " intricate " of the bunch )

My advice.. a pretty simple text only logo. Look at the positioning of the logo in the examples above, and with the exception of Quicksprout, they are all in the upper left, small in size and tucked away.

Yes you can find articles on the net about the importance of a logo and how they may have increased overall " conversion ". ( Mathew Woodward did such an article ) but what is important to remember here... with the logo came a whole lot of other site changes, so to say the logo increased conversion alone, might be a bit over board.

Like I said go simple, and focus more on the elements of the site that will actually make a difference. Ones that you can test and refine. ( landing pages, call to action etc )

If I were you I would forget about doing the logo myself, go to fiver and get one done.

It took me a long time to figure this out, stop trying to do things you are not good at, or that will take you forever to finish.

Out-source this stuff, someone on fiver can make a logo so fast it is crazy--and I would be working on it for months--why bother.

Use this time to work on other aspects of your biz--things that you are good at.

I believe that most of the people who have started their own business must have obsessed for some time about printing business cards and designing the best logo and website. Even I was one of the lot.

The very first company that I started with my friends, we spend weeks designing the best looking business card for each of us and spend 2 months designing the website. But in the end didn't even make a single sale because we were obsessed about creating the best brand before even starting.

Please do not waste your time in these unimportant things in the initial stages of the business. Once you start generating a steady flow of income, you can recruit the best designers to create your logo. Till that time use a generic icon or like savidge4 mentioned, use a text based logo.

If you want, you can use type out your website name in a unique font and use it as your logo. You can find thousands of such fonts in Dafont.com or 1001fonts.com. You can use canva.com to design your logo. You can also use icons from Flaticon.com to create a logo/favicon.

Whatever you do, do not obsess about making it perfect. Believe me, no matter how much time you spend on designing your logo now, you will get bored with it within a few months or years and will ultimately change it. So, spent that time building a customer base and marketing your website.

Use Paint.net and/or GiMP. Both are free. You can then figure out how to use them and create simple logos for yourself.

But if you're getting too wrapped up in it then I suggest hiring someone to make a professional logo for you. I would pay more than $5, more like $50+.

I got it several years back and have never had to pay for an update.
