Well, my question is very simple.

I have purchased a hosting plan and i've built a website. Now, i was under the impression that in order to have a second or a third etc... website, you need to buy ANOTHER hosting plan. Some people told me this is not the case and you can have multiple sites and you just pay for the domain name.

Is this the norm? I mean, i thought i had to pay another 50$(+the name) to create a new site.

    No you got that all wrong my friend. Your web hosting is just to host all your website depending on the plan you paid for either monthly or yearly. You buy new domain names if you want to build a new website and add to the ones you already have with that hosting plan. Hope that is clear enough

    Depends on the plan you got with your hosting company. Eg. In Hostgator, you can purchase plan just for a single domain hosting or multiple websites hosting.
    If you've got multi website plan, all you need to do is get a domain name & add it under your current hosting package.

    If you have a reseller plan or a VPS, you're good to go.

    Check it comes with WHM, or equivalent.

    Otherwise you might have to use 'add on' feature, to add another domain to your account.

    In either case, you'll need to buy a new domain name for each site - but they only cost around $5 per year.

    My favorite tactic is to lease a server box inside a local data center. Nothing too fancy, just the basics to get things going. The advantage here is the incredible flexibility it provides: I can crank up as many sites as I want, it does not matter. As mentioned in previous posts, just have to pay for each domain, that's all ...

    If you have a single domain hosting, you can only host one website on it unless you build all of your website on subdomains. If you have a multi domain hosting plan you can build as many websites as you want on separate domains.

    The difference between those two plans should be a dollar or two, so it's totally worth it to have the multi option.

    There are different hosting packages you can go for

    There is one that only take just 1 website
    And there is also one that can take multi website

    It actually depends on your budget.

    if your package allows for more than one hosting, then you can add your other websites (if you have additional websites) by using the addon domain on your cpanel

      Great. It seems that i've purchased the basic plan from bluehost, which doesn't allow for more than one website. Is there a way to upgrade the hosting service, so i don't have to purchase another hosting plan entirely?

        Contact their support and tell them you want to upgrade. They will tell you how to do it.

    A couple people mentioned add-on domains and that's one way to do it. I like to have cpanel for each site so I use reseller hosting to host multiple sites yet keep them 'separate'.

    I would buy one reseller hosting acct (mine are with Hostgator as I've had no trouble with them over the years) -there is a WebHostManager feature to help you manage each site from one hosting page - and each site has it's own c-panel. To me, it's better than add-on domains but that's personal preference. You can put quite a few sites on a $25-30 reseller acct and managing them is easy peasey.

    No, you usually have one main domain associated with your hosting plan. The other domains fall under that one. Don't confuse that with subdomains.

    I can't speak for Windows environments, but Apache is done that way.

    Your host can explain all that to you. They get those types of questions A LOT.

    I've had many hosting plans from different hosts. Every single one of them worked that way.
