Stressed Out in Your Job? Internet Marketing May Not Be the Solution For You!

I understand that one of the attractions of the "Internet marketing lifestyle" is the supposed freedom and control that one can find in his/her daytime work. In many peoples' minds the "American dream" has shifted from owning a home to owning a business - one that will support a more relaxed and less stressful daily work routine than the typical 8-5 employee model working for someone else.

I have learned a hard lesson about job stress over my lifetime that I'd like to share. I do so hoping that you younger marketers might find some "takeaways" or helpful hints as you contemplate going into business for yourself as a full- or even part-time marketer.

My realization #1: Assuming the role of "boss" or head of your own business does not lessen the potential for stress or burnout in your daily life - in some ways it is amplified.

My realization #2: If you are a high-stress person as an employee working for someone else, chances are extremely good that you will be a high-stress online marketer.

My realization #3: The IM business model and approach you choose can, of itself, contribute to or lessen the daily stress you feel as an Internet marketer - "choose your poison wisely."

My realization #4: My experience throughout my life has given me ample evidence that stress is almost always self-induced and rarely the "fault" of others or "things" that happen to us. (see next paragraph)

My realization #5: Discipline and work can almost always overpower stress.

Let me briefly explain why I'm talking about this in an Internet marketing forum.

I believe stress is the direct result of our own human failing to do what we know we should do or need to do. As we apply discipline and work to our lives, we reduce this human failure - the discrepancy between knowing what needs to be done and actually getting it done. Let that sink in for a moment.
  • You stress about your health or weight. Are you eating well, sleeping well, exercising, seeing a doctor?
  • You stress about a relationship. What are you doing to fix it? Are you trying to compromise, empathize, and mend fences?
  • You stress about being too busy. What are you doing to simplify, remove distractions, and un-clutter your life?
  • You stress about being in a dead-end job. Are you studying, learning a new skill, networking to explore other options?
  • You stress about not having enough money. Do you have a budget? Are you good at telling the difference between needs and wants? Are you heavily in debt? Are you curbing your appetites?
We know what needs to be done in most cases, right? Then why don't we do it? The reasons are many, but they usually result in our self-induced stress over something that we rationalize is beyond our control.

So if you felt stress in your previous employment, I would ask, just what did you do to relieve that stress? Nothing? Are you drawn to IM because you want to get away from deadlines, low wages, boring tasks, or being told what your daily routine should look like? Wave a red flag!

Internet marketing brings with it a unique and obviously different set of "rules" or challenges that many don't consider before jumping in head first. Some will say "there are no rules" in IM and anything goes! Yes, to some extent that is true about business models, strategies and tactics; but I am thinking more about the traits or skills one must have or develop in order to be successful at self employment. "Discipline" is at the top of my list. Closely behind are "persistence," "work ethic," "creativity," and "problem solving."

Some employees in the off-line world are not required to have developed any of these skills or traits. If that includes you . . . I would caution that IM may be a very rude awakening for you! And if stress was a big factor in your daily working life, getting into IM and creating a steady source of income for yourself could be a seemingly impossible challenge and source of even more stress than you've ever faced before.

Don't get me wrong . . . I'm not here to persuade you that Internet marketing is not for you. But I see a whole lot of people failing in this business and stressing out about how complex and difficult it is to know or learn everything that seems to go into being a profitable marketer.

Aside from the technical and knowledge requirements (that can be learned), I would just caution you about what lies ahead if you lack discipline, a strong work ethic, problem solving capabilities, some creativity, etc.

I hope this post helps you somehow,

Steve

I agree that the wrong assumptions and expectations WILL stress entrepreneurs out.

To minimize stress, do the following

    1) Set daily routines

    2) Do 'box' breathing before you start work

    3) Break your work sub-tasks into short 15 minute 'bursts'

    4) Power through these bursts

    5) Take a break between bursts by standing up and listening to relaxing sounds/music

    6) After 3 minutes, power through another 15 minute burst

Using these techniques, I have increased my productivity by 400%

Massive fan of frequent breaks and mindful breathing here too.

I work for 45 to 50 minutes and break for 10. Not as big of a burst, but I totally see how my efficiency going through the roof with this approach.

Thank you for your post. This relates to me (and many others). When I was more young (25-26) I made some good dough by working for others. They paid me well and on time. I thought making money from the Internet is easier, but soon I hit a think concrete wall when tried to work on my own, build a brand and play with traffic. I noticed my hairs started to turn gray (in my early 30s) after rigorously working hard day-and-night for more than four years straight. It was due to the immense stress which I couldn't control. So, yes what Steve said is absolutely correct. Having a well-paid job is better than pursuing a carrer in IM.

I'd add that you need a good idea of what truly motivates you. Habits like discipline, persistence, work ethic etc., will come a lot easier if you have a compelling reason to acquire and hone them.

Being stuck in a job or other situation in which you feel you have little or no control can be immensely stressful. With a dead-end or terminally frustrating job, focusing on the bigger picture (saving up for a home or starting a family for example) might help you through, but many take the view that only being in business for themselves can give them the freedom and control they need. That's becoming even more so now when job security is pretty much a thing of the past.

Obviously, not everyone is cut out to run their own business. That's why you need to do your own soul-searching beforehand and go into any solo venture with your eyes wide open. Steve's post lays out the potential difficulties and obstacles you'll have to address if that's the route you choose. But as Steve also points out, stress is much easier to deal with if you are able (and resolve) to do something about it.

The existence or lack of traits and skills learned and applied in previous jobs are a good indicator of success or failure in Internet Marketing. If someone has not learned before how to solve their own problems...figure things out for themselves...it's not likely they're going to suddenly start doing so once they make themselves the boss.

If you're the type of person who needs a road map or procedure laid out in front of you to follow, IM is not for you. Bizopps will promise the easy map to follow for you, but the truth is they will only give you a part of the puzzle: a piece of Traffic or a piece of Conversion. The rest you must figure out yourself. And if you are not accustomed to figuring things out on your own, you will just sit there and get nowhere except increasingly broke and frustrated.

Being your own boss sounds great. What comes with that is the need for discipline, the need to show up and do the work, and the need to figure out the direction for yourself. If you haven't done those things in your job, you won't start now.

Hi, Good level of stress will help one to push forward but when one is in comfort zone, you tend to stay where you are and forget to keep learning. This would be an unhealthy stage as you freeze and stop to improve. The corporate world is cruel, once you reach late forties and staying too long in a job, any change of management or restructuring will get you replaced by younger people with the vitality and idea creativity.
Why many start to move into IM, maybe due to losing faith with the current job, no further advancement, want to get into higher income bracket, start to realize you can do more, etc. Yes agreed that IM may not be suitable for all, at least if you try and fail, but never fail to try.
Many newbies do not know what to expect in IM, thought just taking a course and follow the steps given by the internet expert then money comes pouring in. The truth is you have to set a positive mindset and do not expect fast or overnight results. Don't be afraid to ask question when you have doubt and bear in mind to have perseverance. If you notice, most of the successful marketers have budging eye bags due to the mind is always working, can't go to sleep as IM is very competitive hence will need to generate ideas, move fast to be successful.

I was stressed out with going to school let alone a job lol. My first job was a dishwashing job and i could barely handle that! "Too much work" i said to myself. Then i decided that i needed to find a solution to take care of the job problem. Would take me many years after to finally discover the solution.

You totally need to do the mindset/energy work before starting IM. Excellent post Steve.

IM or blogging cannot be an escape. In truth, your deepest fears expose themselves more quickly in IM because you are calling the shots, leaving your comfort zone and doing stuff you never do in a job.

Follow your passion through IM; make it about learning, having fun, studying, practicing and helping folks as you create, not about money. If you haven't found a niche you feel passionate about it is better to stay on the sidelines, delve into sources of stress, feel out these unpleasant feelings, and do some clearing before you enter the online business fray.

You cannot get over what's still in you.

I would agree. Anyone who gets upset, angry, stressed or anything like this easily shouldn't try to start their own business regardless in if it's online or not.

Many people think it's easier and stress free but it couldn't be further from the truth. With that in mind, there are some ups too

Steve, this is a great piece of advice for newbie internet marketers who come into this Dream LifeStyle thinking that they can become a millionaire within a year or sometimes within a few months.

That is how all those gooroos out there have been promoting this "Dream Lifestyle"

But in the end. IM is a business like any other business. There is money only when there is discipline and hard work to create the business.

Yes things can become easy with time, but it can take a lot of time to start making money and replace your current income from a job or whatever else you are doing.

Those who start with a business in mind and have experience of other businesses are able to do well because they have spend the time to learn every thing about doing a business.

In fact only 4% People actually make any Money with this Lifestyle Business.
This article may be a show stopper for a lot of people. But I don't want that to happen. The only reason for writing that article and this piece by you Steve is to educate people on what they should look for coming to them. If you are well informed then it will help a lot.

Hope maximum people read this article.

Again thank you for bringing up this subject.

That's so true, internet marketing are not for those who easily gives up. It entails patience, a lot of patience and motivation. If you get stress with the results and the job with all the things that you need to accomplish just find time to de-stress and get some "fresh air", pause for a while then continue afterwards

IM is a BUSINESS and like any other business requires

    DISCIPLINE and a SYSTEM

Which is "dont dab from strategy to strategy but have a plan" and stick with it.
