What Do YOU Do When You Make A Business Mistake?

Simple question.

Quick story, not related to business but it makes a point.

I was working on a new song and just before I got ready to finalize the
master recording, I trashed it accidentally...all gone.

Now, I could have gotten upset about putting in all that work for nothing
but instead I just started all over again and the second attempt actually came
out better than the first one.

Here's the lesson.

When you screw up, don't look at it as a failure but as a chance to do
better the next time. My second recording was so much better than the
first that I was GLAD I trashed the initial one.

Screw up your sales page?

Make it better.

Create a product that everyone says sucks?

Make a better one next time.

Wrote a resource box for an article that got no clicks?

Make a better one next time.

Don't get upset about it. Just improve.

What do YOU do when you screw up?

Do you whine in your cornflakes or do you pick your butt up off the floor
and get back on the horse?

I know what I do.

Hope this helps somebody.

Trashing a track before a Mixdown & Master.... Ive been there!

Most of the time I save my work regularly. I make backups if im a tempting something that might not work.

However when i do screw up and cant fix the issue i tend to sulk for an hour or two, then hit the bottle for the rest of the day!, It usually works because by the next day i am usually up for the challenge of re-doing my work!.

P.S. In all seriousness, your post carries a great message. And you could just as easily framed it as,

"WHO do YOU blame when you screw up?"

I think that's the other side of the coin.

Obviously, it was YOU who trashed the recording, so I guess you weren't about to blame anyone ...other than technology. Lol.

    Good looks.
Marc, I've learned to take responsibility for when things go wrong. I don't
blame others anymore. Yes, I used to. But that ship has sailed.

If somebody says to me, "Steve, you screwed the pooch on this one" I
say, "Okay, how did I do it and what can I do to insure that it won't
    happen again?"

In the case of my "technology" mishap, it was purely my own carelessness.

I was making a video a few months ago.

I was adjusting the audio. I made an adjustment and meant to do a Save As to save a copy, but did a Save instead. Which meant I couldn't undo. And since I really needed the original audio as well as the modified audio, well, that was a bad thing.

I pressed on, but, no, the second version was not as good as the first.

In addition to taking responsibility and not blaming others its important to realize that making mistakes is part of the process. This was a huge hurdle for me because I thought I had to know everything before I'd start something in order to avoid mistakes. I wasted a lot of time.

I now realize that making mistakes is a powerful learning tool and instead of trying to be perfect, once I have an idea flushed out, I run with it knowing that it could be a winner of just as easily a dud.

I fume about it for a minute, then laugh at my stupid mistake and get on with it. Life is too short to be upset and put yourself down!

    Steven,

    Great post as usual...

I guess the saying is true that if you aren't making that many mistakes, you're not trying that hard.

Even better is instead of "ya move on" like a lot of people say...I say "ya move UP!"

Hope that little saying helps someone as well.

    Cheers,

    Brad

I've also made a VERY big mistake but I learned a VERY big lesson. I've lost a lot of money but it is worth the lesson.

    Failing is actually learning.

Thank you for reminding it again.

Making mistakes is how you learn, but I still blame it on my sister when I make one

Too many people sit on their hands or scratch their heads, when what they ought to be doing is working harder and smarter
