Don't discount ANYTHING you do or learn here

I've been here for a long time. Learning and growing and networking and trying things.

One of the most important things I've learned?

What you do matters.

Helping small businesses through offering services? You're helping someone chase their dreams.

Helping customers lose weight or improve their relationships? You are positively impacting their lives forever.

No matter what you're doing (assuming you aren't spamming people,) remember that what you do can make a big difference.

Focus on that.

The impact is what matters.

Getting paid is great. But I feel better when I get Thank You notes.

Connect with people. Help solve their pain points.

Grow a business focused on helping people.

And they will help you in return!

One thing I've learned over the years. Find a way to help people and the rest will fall into place.

That's a great tip, Chris, but in reality, what most online marketers do is they sell well-packed online crap.
As a healthy living enthusiast and a pretty knowledgeable person in healthy living, losing weight, improving your mood, boosting your metabolism and so on, I can say that MOST of digital (and physical) products simply don't work. Moreover, they can hurt.

The same applies to MMO and other niches.

So yes, I do agree that helping people should be our number one priority. But this is what we, the online marketers, often ignore. And that's not how it should work.

This is one of those "secrets" that has been around forever, but has to be repeated over and over for us to get it.

Money truly should be just the by-product of what you do!

Always good to remind people of this. It's scary that I've run into newbs and also experienced IMers who still don't get this concept

An idea that connects along with this is "Be Willing To Begin Badly."

Mix it up, get out there, talk with your target market. You'll learn things so quickly by being willing to begin badly and getting out there doing something.

If you wait, wanting to "get everything perfect," you'll never get started. Be willing to have bad conversations. Be willing to be wrong (wrong pain point, wrong approach, wrong process.) It's OK. Intention is more important than skill and people pick up on intention.

I don't like to promote the loony notion that "whoever fails the most, wins." The goal in business is never, and I mean never, to fail. The goal is to succeed.

Sure, nothing ever goes straight up like a rocket. Everybody has its ups and downs, but fewer bumps in the road the better. Look, markets don't reward failure. They reward those who accomplish what they set out to do and succeed. It's not rocket science.

My advice: If you're going to fail, fail fast. If you're going to try something out, you want to know sooner rather than later if you're on the wrong track so you can make adjustments before you run out of runway.

Worded that way, the notion is indeed loony. While the goal is not to fail, failure is common, especially among beginners. Being willing to risk failure on the road to success is the point, not simply failure.

It's also not absolute. If this were an absolute, we wouldn't have microwave ovens, Viagra or post-it notes. All were the result of repurposing "failures" in the original goal.

Besides, all rocket science is at its root is the notion of forcing hot air through a small opening...

This makes much more sense. The problem most people have with this is that they don't define what constitutes failure or success to begin with. Take this IM/MMO universe. Many of the people who complain about gurus scamming them buy a headline about easy riches, and instead of evaluating and making corrections, make a halfhearted stab and move on to the next easy button $7 wonder product.

Much better to fully understand the plan, map out what needs to be done and when, then define what success looks like. If you reach that point, examine the results and either make adjustments based on real results or move on to something else. Don't keep beating a dead horse - all you get is whip marks on your steaks...

Sounds like one of those lessons from an old-time legend. I like threads like these because for the most part, we all can read about traffic generation and affiliate marketing (and etc).... but rarely do we get the posts (like this one, and the posts from Steve B), where they give you the TRUE secrets of gaining the "edge". To me this is more valuable than another traffic or funnel strategy. Great post.

This is a common theme in many industries, from entertainment to business and beyond. some of the biggest long time successes credit creating transformation in others' lives as the driving force, with money simply being a way to keep score.

Contrast this with some of the people dubbed "successful" simply because they accumulate a lot of money. Look beyond the bank accounts, and many times you find very lonely, unhappy individuals.

    Amen WP, amen.

We forget sometimes - even if you run a thriving online business - that all the free and premium help makes an impact.

For every thank you or genuine note of appreciation, there are 100 more lurkers aka folks who are too shy to reach out and let us know how thankful they are for our impact who we are helping just by sharing our experiences with them.

I recall a while back someone sending me an email, saying how they bought some of my eBooks and audio books. They had been following me for years and this was the first time they reached out.

Keep at it guys. Help people with love. Be generous. You are impacting far more folks than you could ever dream of.

    Great message.

I agree with you and I've made the transition from an obsession with ROI to contribution.

However ... remember that you're talking to people who hardly made any money online and lost hundreds or thousands in products / services / mentorship.

They've been burned, they're in the hole, they are desperate to earn some money, at least to break even. You're talking to an audience that is similar to poker players on a very bad streak and who just want to get a winning hand before they must leave the game.

That being said - do you think they'll care more about contribution or at least getting back to zero?

I can say that I don't want to be ROI oriented because it worked out for me. But if now I was in a hole and I would feel like the walls are closing in, believe me, I'd discard your post in second too.

I agree with you. I really do. I've wrote in my journal about this today. It's just about meeting your audience where they really are - not where we wish them to be.

    Your friend,

    Terrific thread!
It's amazing also that so many people are solely focused on themselves and how much money they can make. Without customers, you'll never make any money.
Without a good way to help people, you'll never make any money.

If you help enough other people get what they want, you can have anything you want.
So stop looking in the mirror and start looking at the people around you! Help at least 1 person every single day! Then rinse and repeat.
