What you should be asking yourself is WHERE does my ideal audience/customer hangout.

I agree with BradKasten when he mentions all those different sources, but you have to be strategic so you can maximize the traffic you're attracting to your website.

For example, if you're building a site specializing in video recording and editing techniques it make more sense for you to look for traffic on platforms like YouTube rather than say twitter.

Not to say you can't find some people on Twitter, but YouTube as a platform lends itself to having more people who would likely engage with the content on your website.

Does that make sense?

Then once you know where to find people who would engage with your site, share content on those platforms to attract them back to your site.

there is no such thing "best" traffic, what you'll be doing with your "targeted" traffic source matters. Without knowing your end goal, its hard to suggest you something.

It very much depends on your niche. If your niche is dump truck rentals, private jet charter, demolition services etc. traffic from Pintrest or Snapchat or any other social media traffic is not going to be any use to you. SEO and PPC traffic is needed.

SEO is the best option to get organic traffic. You can get traffic through Social media share. But if you stop sharing your post on the social media, you can't get traffic from there. It is the proper SEO, that helps you to get traffic automatically.

Unlike PPC, SEO takes time and your website needs to be of a certain quality (that you need to know) in order to rank. You'll never rank an opt in page, for example. But you can rank an in-depth blog post that funnels people to an opt in page.

Run out of budget on Facebook and your traffic dies. But if you're in say the insurance space, it's unlikely you'll get traffic on Day 1 from SEO, whereas Facebook you can.

Personally I have found the most success with SEO of any acquisition channel. Visitors trust the website more if they find it in the search results ranking high. But it needs a thought out strategy, constant monitoring and there is always more to do. A lot of mis/information that makes SEO confusing, sometimes more than it needs to be.

Both are subject to algorithm changes, pre-planning, adaptation and constant evolution.

In all seriousness, having a huge and bottomless marketing budget to buy traffic is the best option. Of course, few of us have that luxury.
