This was VERY hard. There were quite a few that I really liked and that could have been in here. I don't like choosing things like this but I managed to do it without pawning it off on Bryan this time :-)

Thanks to all those who participated - I really appreciate it and had fun reading every entry!

Thank you!

You are so sweet to say that! I keep looking over everyone elses post/shoulders for ideas. LOL

I do have just one more thing I might try.

          Everyones style is so different!

I keep re-reading the rules and I'm probably over analyzing at this point. Someone suggested I may have been a bit too wordy which doesn't surprise me.

I keep thinking I would vote for everyone elses but mine at this point.

Your formula is much better in my opinion - your bullets are obvious, length is good, and I like how it has almost a press release feel to it.

Ok, I need to get on this quick b/c I can already see this going by very quickly. Competition is looking stiff and looks like I need to pull out some serious guns if I'm going to have a chance in this fight.

PS, something going on strange on this forum, I just saw a bunch of quoted things appear below my post that I didn't select to quote.

Ha - I thought about doing a video entry - and already did one for the WF a week ago, but can this be used for this contest?

Allen, please clarify - will only written submission be accepted or can audio and/or video be submitted?

Okay...I love this. This is such a fascinating contest.

Not sure whether I'll enter. Maybe. We'll see.

BUT WHAT ARE MOST OF YOU THINKING ???

Here are 2 big problems (in my admittedly not so humble opinion -- but then I've written 10s of thousands, if not 100s of thousands, of words of copy critiques for a stable of enthusiastic clients...)

The domain of the game is: copy, advertising, marketing.

What do we know about this game?

      ATTENTION IS GOD!

      What else do we know?

Thank you, Seth Godin -- people are slammed with thousands of marketing messages each day.

WHAT IS MAKING YOUR MARKETING MESSAGE STAND OUT?

I mean...from the get go. From the very first point where you even announce that you've made an entry?

You're missing an opportunity. That link -- that link should say something that gets the reader's pulse racing more than:

      "My War Room Ad."

See, your marketing has to stand out from the get go. From the earliest possible moment. (And, having written this, don't you think I'll get a whole lot more readers to my entry...just because I'm cheeky enough to put my two cents' worth in here? You're going to remember me. Why? Because I didn't take the standard route.

      THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

      In more ways than one.

How you introduce yourself, and your entry, is one way to think outside the box. It's actually thinking about the whole process. The whole process of delicious, delicate and fragile attention.

NOW, I'M GOING TO BE EVEN MORE CHEEKY

In fact, my criticism even goes after one of the entrants who is a very successful copywriter (but I think most people here don't know that. You might have to visit another forum to discover that.)

Even his link to his entry has the most pablum-like, oatmeal-bland link.

      IT'S ALL ABOUT SEDUCTION...

      Every. Single. Piece.

Start, from the very first thought, with seduction.

How can I get people excited FROM THE GET GO.

      BIG PROBLEM #2:

This is ALSO A "THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX" ISSUE.

Wonderful that thinking outside the box can have so many facets to it.

What is the FIRST think you should be doing as a marketer and/or copywriter?

      WHO IS YOUR MARKET?

Has anyone asked Allen Word One About who the target market is?

      Oh, you think it's obvious?

Okay -- then, is it for people who are long time members of the Warrior Forum -- know what the Warrior Forum is, know, or have heard of, the "War Room" ?

Many of you are writing as though that's the case.

You are making assumptions -- and you've never asked Allen question 1. (Except about deadlines, somewhat important -- and about images -- something which, as someone pointed out, that a careful reading of Allen's post would have easily revealed. Don't make your client think you are a dufus by asking already answered questions. Or, if you do (I admit, I do it!) -- frame it with things like "Okay, I just want to make double make sure", or "you probably mentioned this and I missed it", etc.

This is not a cardinal sin, making assumptions. But if you are going to make assumptions -- start with the assumption of "know nothing" rather than "know something."

Don't assume they know what the War Room is. Or even the Warrior Forum. Why would you do that, without first checking with Allen?

I can't believe that y'all have been here in this wonderful place and are missing such a basic thing as asking "Who Is The Target Market?" Is it standing in front of the great guru Allen Says that makes your marketing IQ drop -- that you just assume Allen will have provided you with everything you needed to know to do the best possible job?

Now, there was something else I was going to say. I think.

Oh. It's still about this assumption stuff.

      And getting the click.

You guys who have entries -- spark some interest in those links you put in this thread. Make everyone who comes to this thread want to click through to see if the rest of your copy is interesting. HEADLINES -- that's kinda what those links are like. They are places to grab attention. And if you want to make sales, you need to start grabbing attention IMMEDIATELY.

So, you're going -- okay Miss Too-Big-For-Your-Britches -- what would you put there?

      Glad you asked.

      (heh heh heh.)

What If It Should Go Away, And You Never Saw It?

Okay, you smart marketers out there -- educate the rest -- what are the principles I'm using here? What's happening to the reader?

(Why am I asking so many questions ?)

Oh, and a subhead....but, of course, that wouldn't be part of the link.

But it certainly can be part of the post that contains the link:

"Few Talk About It, Keeping It Their Close-To-The-Vest Secret Of Success"

Now, I don't claim these are star quality. These are just some of the first things that popped into my mind.

I'm kinda involved in some other copywriting projects, so, with due respect to my clients -- even though I'd love to enter here -- I don't know whether I'll have the time.

But, because of my love of the forum, and my love of you guys, and because, well, I can't stop the "copy critique" part of me -- I'm offering these thoughts for your consumption with the hope that it will raise the thinking on the contest.

And if Allen wants to send me a 4-figure check just as thanks, I certainly won't object. LOL.

      Live JoyFully!

      Judy

PS -- too funny. I just realized I've removed all the copywriting links, and links to my copy critique wso, from my signature...LOL. Script installations are a relaxing, and different, sort of challenge. And I've got enough writing on my plate at the moment.

        Dearest Allen,

I've been inspired to ask a question or 3.

Who is the target market for this ad? Will it be shown on the Forum here to members who have not converted or is this for the public in general? Or both?

Can I submit more than one entry? I realize revisions can be made, but wanted to know if more than one entry is also allowed as I am unclear on that.

Is this for users with high speed internet access? Or will you be looking to make this friendly to the dial up crowd?

        Thanks,

UPDATE: I think I made a mistake by saying the word 'ad'. I'm looking more for something like a "Large Review" :-)

I'm noticing many entries that are about the size of classified ads. That's not going to tell a potential member much.

I'm trying to avoid the words "Sales Letter" because that's not really what I'm looking for. At least not in the general sense of the term anyway.

I'm looking for something like a Review/Testimonial/Sales letter hybrid. And larger than a classified ad for sure :-)

    Thanks!

One of the more interesting things about this contest--aside from the extremely generous prizes (Thanks, Allen)--is the ability to not only see your competition but to read their entries.

This fairly unique situation can be a two-edged sword.

While it's great to know exactly what your competition is doing there may be a tendency to think, "That's OK, but I can do it better", and then trying to "one-up" some other person's work. Or, in a slightly better case scenario, be inadvertently influenced by another submission.

Having read only one submission in the test forum before deciding it was a bad idea I don't know if "thanks" are enabled. If they are and are being used that may also jaundice your view.

So, as difficult as it will be, if I enter, I won't be doing--this one time only--competitive research.

Just a couple things that occurred to me...

Use them as you see fit,

    Elmer

      Shhhhh....it's a secret....

RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE, if you'd but look.

Allen's actually dropped a few hints as to a few of the letters he seems to like.

I'm not going to say what. Not my place.

Just -- "He who has eyes, let him see..."

      I will ask you this...

      WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ?

Hamster King, this applies to you, too, so listen up!

What is the absolutely 1 essential that you need to make a sale?

      Hmmmm????

Well...after my tour of most of the salesletters this morning -- many of you don't have it. Or some of you, you have a placeholder. WTF? (Hint: you don't need to use a placeholder at this time. You can use the real thing.)

Geesh. How is Allen going to pick the first 3?

Maybe it could be from....sales ?

Is the light coming on ?

Here's Another Faux Pas that would, for me, put you immediately at the bottom of the barrel ...

      Comments like:

      "I just slapped this up."

      HOW RUDE!

Uber Copywriter Gary Bencivenga prefaces many of his autographs with "Why not the best?"

      Indeed.

Why are you willing to put in a half-assed effort?

You may not win any of prizes, or have any hope to.

But guess what? Participation in this contest pays you in other ways. As Dr. Mani has pointed out. It pays you in exposure...

Some of you, it's going to give you some exposure that you may not have had before. Avenuegirl comes to mind.

Right now, this woman appears to be participating in this contest full bore (boar?) ahead. (Okay, I admit -- I could be somewhat prejudiced. She thanked my post. And participated in another thread I produced. But that spirit! It gets noticed! No hiding her light under a bushel!

Interesting, that. While I'm not Allen, and I have nothing to say about the voting (explicitly, anyway; and implicitly, if so, may be no more influence than any of you have.) -- she got my attention. I'm sure she's gotten a few other people's attention, too.

Remember what I said before ... ATTENTION IS GOD when it comes to marketing.

      {/rant]

      oh yah...

PS -- I think I also found the inspiration for this contest.

PPS -- someone has their copy in a serif font. That is soooo hard for these old eyes to read. There's a reason people use sans-serif fonts online.

    "I just slapped this up."

    HOW RUDE!
    Fixed my post there ZapSeo...

It's a figure of speech for "I don't have 40 hours to put into this like I normally would..."

It's the best I can do in a few hours, it was actually quite a bit of work, but don't have the time to edit/polish it like I would for a normal client...

Hell, if I wasn't swamped with work right now I probably WOULD put 40 hours into it...

But I don't... I don't know the deadline, I'm not 100% sure where it's going to be marketed, or if I'm supposed to be targeting forum members who haven't signed up yet or people who may be new to IM and this forum in general.

I'm working on a project right now that pays more than 1st place upfront... I'm sorry if you're offended that I have to give that client my full attention right now, on top of personal projects and everything else I've got going on.

Uber Copywriter Gary Bencivenga prefaces many of his autographs with "Why not the best?"
Because my "best" takes 40 hours or longer... Although I still think if my hunch is correct about who this is targeted to that I did a pretty damn good job on the copy given the time frame I have to go on here...

It's not a half-assed 3 line ad, it was a lot of work... Is it my best? No. Can it sell to the right crowd? Yeah, if I'm right about who that crowd IS.

Sorry if it sounded "RUDE" to you, but honestly this is the ONLY contest like this I'd ever consider entering... And I seriously doubt anyone else is spending 40 hours writing their ads either.

    Peace,

best does not necessarily require 40 hours in everyone's book. One of my mentors pulled in $1.4M in 15 minutes from a letter he wrote, I don't recall how long -- but he did it in front of a group of people during no more than an evening in Friday Harbor, Washington. (He's actually the person who turned me on to Bencivenga, btw.)

I don't have adequate amount of time to write something that would do what I have justice -- so I'm not writing it.

Over on the copywriters' forum here, there's a thread for people requesting reviews. It comments about people who say such things as "I just slapped this up here."

It sets up a bad taste in people's minds from the outset.

Your work deserves a better shot. Whatever you do.

So, even if you DID just "slap this together" -- and can't devote your usual amount of time -- it most likely serves you better to keep the amount of effort you spent to yourself. Some of my best selling work is some of the writing I've done the quickest.

PS -- that's a sweet job you did on Ken Fry's copy, BTW (I haven't read your contest copy yet.). I was part of Ken's inaugural group on that product and it pleases me that his outstanding product is so well-served by your copy.

    Excellent Allen - Thx

    Just a few quick questions?

Obviously you have to be a member of the war room - does it matter if you just joined
the war room but have been a member of the warrior forum for a few months?

Is the number of posts going to count against you?

It seems like even if someone has been a member for a long time and they do'nt
post regularly some warriors feel like it is not appropriate or acceptable.

But some people just like to keep a "low profile" and some are "more sociable".

Indeed a potpourri of personalities in this very warrior forum.

Say you've written your own unique sales copy can you call in the help of a fellow
warrior to assist you with technical stuff that you do'nt have the proper knowledge
for like for exmple an : extraordinary image

Will it then disqualify you or does anything goes within limits off course!!

I can with it. I also "stole" a lot of stuff from the existing
letter because there's already good stuff there - might as
    well use it!

I really liked how it turned out.

Hope you like it, Allen! ... and send me the $3,000 along with
    it =D

A little thing... I don't know if the code for [ YOU ] still
works but if it does, I figure it's going to be a deadly
attention grabber... just like it did back when it was being
    tested.

    Asher

EDIT: PHEW! Good thing I made it just before I saw the message
"Sorry, the board is unavailable at the moment"... I would have
gone mad if the whole post was not saved.

Allen did say you could edit them. They were just body copy changes...after re-reading the whole thing again, I didn't like how some of the sentences flowed; pacing etc.

          Hey, there!

I am so new here. And I must have spent the last 24 hours reading all the posts on Warrior. I am obsessed.

But it's so cool to read all the entries from a newbie POV. In my business, a new film production assistant is called, "green." I'm green big time here...

I am thinking of joining this contest because, hey, why not, right? On the other hand, I might not be ready to enlist. (get it? WAR room, "enlist.") Thinking about it.

          ANYWAY...

This is a GREAT competition! And it helps me to see what goes in to copy writing - lot of creativity and persistence.

At this point, Frank Donovan and MJ Schaefer are my favorites because they had the most creative angle for my liking. They stood out the most to me.

Hope you've got thick skins, both of you guys, because those angles are going to be used by others now!

          Thanks for running this, Allen!

Hey Allen - I withdraw......Your update about writing a review rather than an ad would put me treading waters too close to Kevin (and we know how he drives a continent) if I were to do a sober rewrite. I won't take it off so if your decisions come down to originality factor you have what was posted very shortly after your announcement to review. I just took a look at what I wrote - not bad for an after the bar blurb, but not exactly what would have been written the morning after. LOL - have fun with it folks.

      Thanks for the post Ray.

It's a valuable lesson I'll be sharing with my teenage daughter later today when she gets home from school.

This was a once in a blue moon, feather-in-the-cap, promotional opportunity for many copywriters who need this type of accolade to put food on the table.

But an irrational fear of not winning kept you, and probably others, from even trying.

You can't win if you don't try. You can't even get better.

Everyone goes through periods like that. Then it's time to hit the Mind Warriors subforum. There's a reason why Allen deems the subject important enough to warrant it's own discussion. It's a place where I've obtained several suggestions this year that have made me mentally stronger - and Borders a little richer.

That hasn't gone without notice. John Rogers and I were discussing that earlier this morning. I have privately made my prediction of the winner, and the reason why. Not too surprisingly, it's the person who "appears to" have taken some of my advice. I don't know whether they actually did or not -- but it certainly jumps over some of the hurdles I mentioned earlier in the thread.

THAT SAID -- and for the edification of those who are less aware of the games that can be played in terms of marketing and in terms of statistics -- depending upon the context (and the pre-selling) -- any letter could probably win.

It's not about the salesletter alone, but about the entire context of the campaign.

I'm in great admiration of the winners -- who, by my lights, must have put in some good amount of time writing their pages. Congratulations.

      Live JoyFully!

      Judy

PS -- I keep promising myself that I will enter these contests. Some great things have happened to some of the people I know who have entered -- and won -- copywriting contests. Vin Montello comes to mind. Unfortunately, I was already behind the 8 ball because of server issues stemming back a few months. Hopefully, I'll have more opportunity.

PPS -- The #1 thing that I think was notable to me among the winners, especially, and less so among the losers were strong and consistent and clear Calls To Action. In case y'all didn't pick up on that earlier. When you totally believe in a product, and believe it really will be beneficial to others, it's not hard to ask for action. In fact, it creates a disharmonic in you if you don't.

        Judy:

Very interesting, but I never saw your post on page 2 until now.

If you want to know, the title THE KINDSVATER WAR ROOM CONTEST ENTRY was intentionally done to (1) draw attention, (2) be different from other entries, and (3) denote confidence. Not sure if that is what is what you are referring to.

And, as you've seen, I did make an effort to introduce Allen Says and the Warrior Forum assuming a lack of knowledge by the reader. Heck, a lot of current Warriors seem to not know who 'Admin' is and are often disrespectful as a result.

Not that I'm much more knowledgeable - I didn't even know there was a preexisting War Room ad until after I submitted my entry. Undoubtedly, Allen will add his Guarantee at the end - an important marketing tool I couldn't include without knowing it existed.

As an aside, when I was new to the forum I went back into the archives (now the archived archives?) and read EVERY post Allen had written. Took a while, but it was well worth it.

Actually, that wasn't quite what I was thinking of -- but THANKS for the response. I LOVE to hear what's behind folks' thinking.

(I think I wrote another post in here somewhere, where I also screamed that "ATTENTION IS GOD." Think after page 2.)

I loved the evidence you mined to put in your letter. Just awesome. Not sure if you practice law any more, but when you have or do, you must be one h*** of a lawyer. You could write a really useful WSO about how you go about gathering evidence -- or even how you gathered evidence for this contest. Or let me interview you

And, as you've seen, I did make an effort to introduce Allen Says and the Warrior Forum assuming a lack of knowledge by the reader. Heck, a lot of current Warriors seem to not know who 'Admin' is and are often disrespectful as a result.
ahhh...I probably have tripped over that particular road bump. Of being unintentionally disrespectful of Allen. I apologize, Allen. Just slap me around a few times and send me to my room.

Brian -- I'm thrilled that you are once again an active, contributing member of the forum. You were missed. Hmmm....yah, going thru all those past posts of Allens.

There's one "post" of his I would love to have, which is Allen's explanation for the copy he used for the "marketing to the herd" forum. Along with the copy. I sooooo miss that forum. It wasn't active, but man, there was some pure gold in there. (Hint, Allen...about that one post, anyway...or the thread?)

This was a once in a blue moon, feather-in-the-cap, promotional opportunity for many copywriters who need this type of accolade to put food on the table.

But an irrational fear of not winning kept you, and probably others, from even trying.

You can't win if you don't try. You can't even get better.
Well put Brian...and many of the "expert" copywriters that didn't bother could have done with the practice.

Congrats to all of the winners! (Jill, I just knew you'd be in there!) It was fun participating and fun watching all of the entries come in. Thanks Allen for offering this contest, it gave me a chance to test my fledgling copywriting skills a bit.

    Cheers, everybody!

I guess now we can't use the alibi that we can't write a sales copy. These winners are ordinary warriors too. Though by looking at Brian's work I can tell that he did gave it some thought and effort..but then that's just my opinion

      Omar:

Several hours of thought and work went into the entry. More could have been spent, but I didn't know when the deadline was.

There were a lot of entries where someone made a post essentially saying: OK, here's my 'try' - something I slapped together in the last 15 minutes. Every time I saw that lack of confidence I knew - even before reading the entry - that it was an entry I had a really good chance of bettering.

It was a few hours of work with no guaranteed monetary return. But I suppose I'm a 'true believer.' I've bought everything Allen has created - and still periodically reread what he wrote many years ago. I firmly believe this is the best marketing forum anywhere and if people spent less time buying WSOs and more time actually applying the wealth of information that is here, like me they could essentially be retired and only work when and if they want to. Perhaps some of that came through in the marketing entry, and hopefully it will bring more valuable contributors to the WF and the War Room.

Congratulations to all the winners and the entrants!

This was a great contest and I had fun entering my comic (I needed a break from "real" copywriting anyway!) I hope you do more contests in the future Allen!

Congrats to the winners. Truly a well deserved win for all.

avenuegirl - damn! Your efforts were a perfect example of true "get-up and go" spirit. Keep rockin'

I feel that every entry was a winner here. Most entries had that "just do it" call to action. All the particpants reflected this attitude. The 'what the hell, i'm may be up against some stiff competition but hey I can do this". For those still sitting on the fence, man go back and read these entries. If they aren't enough to convince you then ....well...um...hmmm??? It's got me beat!

The underlying lessons learned here are gems within themselves. Here's some things to think about.

    * What did Allen get out of this? Some damn good copy for a start. Many, many non WarRoom Members eyes reading the entries ( I wonder how many signs ups there were over the last few days) and how many more to come through the threads let alone the split tests.

    * a perfect well executed contest, one that you could use in your forum.

    * The content that will be picked up from these and bring more visitors into the Warrior Forum.

    * Allen didn't disclose a time frame. He could've closed it at anytime. Which he did. So it brought about a sense of urgency, that get up and go 'push' to get off your ass and get that entry in.

    * Exposure

The list goes on an on....

Anyway congrats once again to winners and entrants. Allen...thank you..you never cease to amaze me!

    Cheers Marianne

Congrats to the winners! There were some truly awesome contest entries.
I very, very rarely read long copy, but I read most of these!

Thanks to Admin for the contest. It was a first class education in copywriting.
It showed me that it doesn't take an expensive copywriter to write fantastic copy.
Passion and knowledge of the subject goes along way.

Joining the War Room is on my to do list, but now it has moved near the top of the list.

Congrats all! It was great reading through the entries. I think I picked up a few things, then again I'm not all that observant... lol.
