Text message OVER email marketing?

by MMWMMW
24 replies
I deal with warm leads, people I have either personally met or at least talked on the phone with.

I know most people use email marketing but everyone gets dozens of "sales" emails per day, but how many "sales" text messages does one get?

Anyone else doing this?

How are you keeping track of your prospects? Any apps you use?

I am no expert in SMS Marketing but has been there forever.

I did it some 6 or 7 years ago and used Clickatell as a provider.
You can have a look at Twilio too.

    Hey MMWMMW

That's awesome that you deal with your prospects via text message - Honestly I feel that's the best way.

Just the other day, I read an article that said 87% of people today now have smartphones - that is very high and it wouldn't surprise me if this number continues to rise.

You also said that you have built rapport with your prospects which is always the key no matter how you get in touch with them.

I say stick with it because most people can't go 5 minutes without looking at their phones nowadays lol

    Just my two cents though!

    Text laws are much stricter.

The cost to send a text is substantially more expensive than email.

The main reason everyone touts text messages is the high open rate.

With email, you can always resend to those that didn't open a message and you can do this over and over. Each new message that you send, you resend to those that didn't open. It costs nothing to do if you're using an ESP with unlimited sending and only takes a couple minutes to set up.

This is what I actually do. I stop when my open rates get down around 5% (I don't want my engagement rate to fall with providers). Then I move all those that didn't open to a free Gmail account and continue the process to make sure I'm not having a deliverability problem with those that remained.

Doing the above can dramatically increase the number of recipients that actually open a specific message.

    Something to think about.

Yes as Diablo said text messages have a higher open rate. I did a quick research on SMS open rates. The open rates for SMS messages are amongst the highest across any form of marketing. Compared to email marketing, which has an average open rate of 15 to 20%, (lot of people will debate this number because it differs so much from industry to industry) open rate of SMS messages is somewhere at 90% some say 98%. This is just my personal opinion but i think SMS have much higher open rates because people when they receive an SMS are expecting something "more personal" .

Also SMS marketing has the highest click through rate (CTR) of hyperlinks (6.16%), compared to email marketing (2.80%), search advertising (1.98%) and social media advertising (0.05%)

But they are more expensive than emails. Cost to send 15.000 SMS per month (within the US, one way communication sms) is around 100/110$.

Be very careful when using SMS for commercial marketing. As Diablo indicated, the laws are much stricter for text messaging than for email.

You must always obtain explicit consent; either verbally or written (ie texting your keyword to subscribe).

In addition, you must include a disclaimer such as "Msg & Data rates may apply", and how subscribers can opt out "Text STOP to unsubscribe".

Texting can indeed be a powerful way to reach customers and clients, but certainly should never replace email or calling by phone as a regular business practice.

What an awesome question, that I would answer as follows:

SMS over email marketing? Heck no!

SMS in conjunction with email marketing? Oh, heavenly glory, yes.

The fact remains that these days, the majority of humans arguably spend more time around their smart phones than on their laptops and desktops.

So heck yes, hit your audience where they are more likely to be residing, wherever that may be!

    Wishing you the best...

I agree. Use both wisely and creatively. Also, try mixing it up and use IVR, FB messenger, and even voice drops too! It pays not to think linear.

Text Message is more effective than than the Email. Most of the people are using the Message than the Email. Due to high cost of The Message than Email, Most of the people are using the Email. Thanks

People buy over a laptop or desktop than a mobile phone.

I feel email marketing is better than sms.
People open their emails when they have free time. But sms are opened any time or simply neglected in few seconds after opening.

    Hi MMWMMW ,

I used text message with facebook messenger to get leads and deal projects.

I know, email marketing still powerful, but text message using facebook messenger is more powerful, because they feel personal relationship with us.

Facebook is good. But remember, they own the platform. The tide can turn and it may not be so good later on. Then your audience only knows to communicate with you on FB or they left FB.

Also, remember how they treated us using fan pages years ago? It was all love with our post engagement, now most have to pay to play just to reach their full audience.

Controlling your own platforms or using a dedicated company that specializes in the medium you use for communication is the name of the game.

I use Facebook as the initial meeting point and then get them on my other communication medium of choice. I still engage through posting and messaging, but the meat of my value is through the other platforms outside of FB.

Facebook, like Google, can be shady

I somehow think that people are more positive about the receipt of a txt than an email. I agree with the point made earlier that txts have a more personal feel to them.

I don't know if anyone has said this yet but many people are reading their emails on their phones.

I have tried SMS and it does convert well if you can establish a conversation.

However I still prefer email marketing.

If people value you, they will open your messages no matter where you are sending from.

I think that Text/SMS marketing is good as compared to email marketing but another aspect is that SMS marketing is not a professional way of marketing. It may be some tools to track SMS marketing campaign but I don't know about (let me know if someone has any idea about). Currently, I prefer the Email Marketing.

    It's the domain of spammers.
