Optimal busines model for keyword research software product monetization

Let's say, I have a new keyword research software product and I need to identify which business model is right for this app.

In your opinion and/or preferably based on your experience which one of these options will generate the highest return on my investment:
  • Free - In-App Advertising
  • Freemium - basic functionality is free but charge for premium features
  • Paid - charge a fee to download

    Hey Joe!

Personally, I have used a keyword research software called Jaaxy for the past 4-5 years and one thing that I noticed them doing is allowing 30 free searches to their potential customers.

This allows them to test drive the software to see the power and how efficient it is, and when the 30 free searches are up they need to pay a monthly membership to keep active.

Maybe this business model would best suit you? It not only builds your list but it's more of a delayed gratification that will still pay off at a consistent as long as you have new clients signing up for their free 30 searches.

Just my two cents but I hope his helps you out

    -Joshua

P.S. Would love to hear more about your product if you wouldn't mind PMing me a link? Myself as well as my followers could use it in our buiness

      Thanks Josh, I appreciate it.

I just took a quick look at Jaaxy and it sounds like a powerful tool. I will probably want to build something smaller at first, maybe focusing only on one specific aspect of the process and charge less than Jaaxy. That said, I have no idea how much Jaaxy charges, I would have to sign up to find out their price, I guess.

But, their business model, as you described it, sounds good. I should definitely consider it.

Thanks again for your helpful reply.

Presumably, you're talking about a B2B sale, you want to sell your product to other businesses.

If so, I'd go the freemium model, out of the three you mentioned.

Going outside your list, I'd look at an online SaaS model, with monthly subscriptions. Maybe combined with a free trial just long enough for your product to embed itself in the customer's business. In other words, let them use it long enough that switching is more painful than paying.

The above applies if you are targeting "real" businesses.

If you're targeting the typical IMer seen here, "FREE" seems to be the holy grail. Go with the free with inline ads model.

Thanks John, yes it seems like the way to go; although I was considering targeting the "typical IMer", as you put it.

So, in your opinion, individual IMers here are not likely to actually pay for software? What about a small one time fee, you think that's a possibility with IMers?
