Freelancing platform similar to Fiverr - to sell services on my own

I'm thinking to get outside Fiverr with my GIGs and to start a website which will partially simulate Fiverr's features:

1. listing my services, with description/video/images
2. payment processor
3. order timeline to chat with the buyer
4. notification/delivery system

I want to do this because I want to drive FB ads and Adwords to my site and to be able to scale my business doing this.

Do you have any recommendation for a platform / site that could help me achieve all these?

Thanks a lot!

Ok if i understood correctly you want to build your own Fiverr website and you don't want to find similar website to list your gigs. Is this right?

2 or 3 years ago i was thinking about doing the same thing and build the platform myself. I then found Freelanceengine which is the best script (wp theme) that replicates many Fiverr's features. If you want to build your own Fiverr then this is a good option. It has all the features you listed...

But then i did my research and at the end didn't go for it because it was either going to be a total failure or a tiny tiny business.

You will need millions to advertise this kind of website if you want to get any traction. Since you are earning so little per order this is going to be a numbers game and to achieve this you will need lot of money. Fiverr wasn't even profitable a couple of years ago. It took them many years to become profitable. Many have tried without succeeding... but hey you never know.

Btw you are doing great on Fiverr, you are a top rated seller. Congrats!

    Good Luck

I suppose what you mean is replicate the functionality on your own website and not actually create a Fiverr replicate which allows others to also register and sell their services, correct?

I do not think it would be easy to replicate Fiverr otherwise...

As PPG19 mentioned, going with a system such as Wordpress and looking for plugins that can be used to make everything work would probably be what you need. You should be able to test many plugins before paying anything to see that you can get everything you need. If it were me, also, I would first create a test website with no data on it, just installing/uninstalling plugins to see that it all works. Once you are decided on what plugins to use and it works on your test site, then create the real thing from scratch (new database, new base, then add plugins...) I've had many problems with Wordpress and Drupal where things would go wrong in the middle so to avoid the headache creating a throwaway test system actually saves you time. You can even do that on your computer if you know how (no need for a remote server.)

Oh ok, i got what OP means now but what's the point of this? Is it jut for the look and feel?

Wordpress/Woocommerce and a couple of plugins will work to replicate this features.

"1. listing my services, with description/video/images
      2. payment processor
      3. order timeline to chat with the buyer
      4. notification/delivery system"

So you would like to have the profile theme you have set up now for your gigs ? two ways go the themeforrest.com and look for a theme should be around 5-15 dollars only thing is you may have a fiverr clone with some of the crap you don't need

Or you could go from scratch and design one and use a Warrior on this site to make it for you! just go to the Warriors for hire!

    Hey northwish

Great post - I totally get why you want to do things on your own - Great way to scale and increase your profit margins.

As for platform you should probably consider a Shopify plugin to really "sexy" things up and make your website look professional.

I recommend Shopify because it seems to me that you're looking to take the route to have your very own eCommerce store and Shopify seems to be the bread and butter for most marketers nowadays looking to sell products.

Just my two cents but I hope this helps!

    -Joshua

P.S. If I were you, I'd keep things running on Fiverr and with every order completion, ask them to subscribe to your newsletter/email list for your personal site. Plus, it's almost like killing two birds with one stone, because Fiverr will bring you organic traffic because of it's authority :-)

    Thanks for all your replies.

    1. I have tried wordpress and added different plugins but the problem is on the order management side - the order timeline that I mentioned above - where you actually chat with the client, asking him for details, maybe he asking something. It's not hard to implement 10 product pages with a paypal buy button - the real challenge is the order management/delivery system.

    2. I tried shopify but there's no way I found to implement the order management part.

    3. The idea is to replicate the basic Fiverr's features, not to create a Fiverr clone. I want to be the only one that sells on the platform. Also, to be able to ask for email subscription, push notif. subscriptions, install FB pixel, analytics and all these - but these are not a problem. I am a programmer myself - I wanted to keep the full coding of the platform as the last resort because it's a lot of work to build it from scratch. A programming company just gave me a $5000 offer to code it.

    4. As Josh Mayers said above, the advantages of owning your own freelance platform are many. You can do all the marketing you want without breaching FIVERR'S TOS (you cannot ask for emails/subscription or chat outside Fiverr with clients).

And after all, why wouldn't you use the 20% margin you give to Fiverr to build your own website which you can scale, too? You can keep both platforms as you go, but having 2 different channels is better than having one.

If there's no other idea, I'll have to code the entire platform myself.

You should probably not create the platform from scratch. I mean, I probably would feel the same (I'm a programmer too.)

However, creating a Wordpress plugin is a bit of a learning curve at first, but once you get it going... There are other platform such as Drupal or Joomla that could have the whole set of tools. On Drupal I used "support" and "storm" as module to manage projects.

For Wordpress there are a few project managers as follow, although my search may be a bit off... Now, buying a wordpress plugin should be a lot cheaper than doing it yourself or hiring a company for $5k (and not unlikely to have short comings.)

That's up to you, though. If you have the time to create the software, it becomes proprietary and you could build a whole company around it.

Sitemile - has the whole thing ready to go for you.
You can see a demo at: www.5dollarr.com and the link to the theme is in the footer.

The developer is a great guy - busy as heck but he will provide great support if you need it. I get by with a css plugin and some others to add extra functions that I need.
