Suggestions on Video Editing Software

If you're just starting out, I suggest Shotcut and/or ActivePresenter (free version) which also has screen capture abilities.

For a more advanced editor Try Divinci Resolve.

For very basic editing and adding captions, if your on Windows you can use Windows Movie Maker, which is included on PCs. Again, it's very basic but probably the easiest to learn.

All of the above are free.

Windows Movie Maker is no longer available & while I managed to get it with some help from someone else, it doesn't allow for a lot of different extensions, & the videos I have were .mkv s

I'm just leary about free software due to viruses/malware.

Download them from their official sites. All three are well known and legit.

Also, I've never heard of .mkv. Will any of the video converters work to convert them to a more common format?

Edit/added: Do a google for "convert .mkv to .mp4".

I don't like using free software b/c of the reasons I already mentioned, so that's why I didn't bother with searching on Google for conversion software.

If a few people tell me they use a piece of software, that's different.

I'll search for those 2 online.

Paid software isn't free from viruses either. I've downloaded and checked out ActivePresenter and Shotcut, but have other options I use. I know plenty of people that use them, as well as Divinci resolve. I suggest you reassess your opinion regarding free software as these are quality, free programs and not simply some random recommendations.

But if you aren't flexible, virtually every name video editing software comes with a free 30 day trial.

It's not that I'm not open to free software, I'm saying that I won't just randomly search online for the software unless someone has recommended & trusts them.

  You're not searching randomly online. I gave you my recommendations based on experience, as well as knowing quite a few video making people. I do run the Warrior Forum's High Voltage Video Forum and I do have a bit of experience with quite a few video editors....probably more than most people.
  
  If you are concerned about viruses, simply get the download link and use one of the free online virus scanners to check it for you.
  
  I also suggest you google "Davinci Resolve reviews", "ActivePresenter reviews" and "Shotcut reviews". Also, search Youtube for each and check out the available tutorials.
  
  As far as Sony Vegas Studio (or whatever they're calling it nowadays), I have it too and don't use it. I prefer Serif's Movie Plus, but I believe it's been discontinued.

Steam has Vegas Movie Studio 14 on sale for under $30 right now. I see a couple different versions at slightly different price levels.

I've used 13 for years and like it a lot. Once you learn the basics of how a video editor works it's straightforward to move to another program.

Camtasia, Adobe Premiere, a bunch of free options.

The basics all work the same...as long as you understand tracks you're fine. You probably won't need to do a mask at this level. Camtasia is overpriced IMO for what you get. It has nifty features but for what I got for around $100 (full price at the time; the sale on 14 is so low I'm considering getting it just because) with the Sony program I'm very happy.

You want a product that is supported. That's why I don't recommend free. Also, you want something that has features but isn't forcing you to pay for a bunch of things you'll never use.

Ok, yesterday I looked into it, but the one that is that price is the basic version & while I said I didn't want fancy features, now that I played around with Camtasia a smidgen, I want at least those features.

People said that for the price of even only $30, the basic version is way too much, to get the Pro & I couldn't find the price for that one I don't think.

That's a nice advice. I'm personally using Sony Vegas, and what I can say is that even though it's not perfect, it is the best entry-level editing software.

You see, it's better to start with Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere because it takes some time to learn how things work. It's better to learn how to use a software which you're going to use in the future. Vegas might be your life-long choice. So, don't waste your time.

I this is a once off I would go for Camtasia 30 day free trial it has all you need to do the job you want, now if this is on going it may not work if do not have funds but you may find a coupon for cyber Monday

Yeh even with the coupon it will be too much as the reg. price is $200+ & I want something I can use permanently as I hope to start my own YT channel soon.

But I did try out Camtasia & I'm very confused as to why when I save a video, it only allows me to save it via their own extension.

How can I save as a MP4?

Some of my videos on YouTube have 100,000+ views.
I just kept it simple...Windows movie maker and an old version of Camtasia is all I've used.
You don't need dazzling effects...just give value in the video and ensure picture and sound are of a decent quality.

Troy it is the way you make them is the hard part for EP , BTW movie maker is not made any more and does not work with updates in Win 10

I like a software called "ArcSoft Video Impression". You can do all kinds of video editing on it. Better than Windows Movie Maker. It has 1-click upload to Youtube, 1-click export to a podcast file, and you can customize the video image. It's expensive though, but worth it.

I assume you are using a mobile device, if so I highly recommend getting the Spice ap, best of all it's free. It had a variety of editing capabilities and fairly easy to use.

I use iMovie for Mac on my Macbook. If you have a PC (not sure why anyone owns a PC

), but iMovie works perfect for me. I have made a lot of videos with it and I am a novice for sure. It does everything I need it to do. Also, it comes pre-installed on a Macbook so it would be a great time to buy one!

No one mentioned about liner-editing programs; In fact, web's best videos are made by liner editors not GUIs like Sony and others. GUI editors got limits, you can't implement your own effects. My favourite is GStreamer multimedia. Its immensely powerful.

I use a couple of different options for various products. My go-to for screen capture and a variety of editing tools is Corel Video Studio. It's inexpensive and you can probably find a coupon somewhere or a Christmas sale price.

It's an Editor's Choice at PC Magazine. You can see their rankings and reviews for several products that might be of interest here...

Windows Movie Maker is free. Since you are beginners, I recommend that you use it. Apoweredit is the alternative to WMM, it's also easy-to-use, and has free elements which can be used in your videos. If WMM often crashes on your computer, Apowered is the great option. iMovie is for Mac. Maybe you need it.

I've used iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Filmora and find that Filmora is the simplest to get started with. I don't remember how much it costs (don't remember it being very expensive) but you can start with their trial version to have a 'feel' of how it works and buy if it fits your usage.

Hey there,

Paid is usually better, but you can get away with some good stuff for free, too. I personally use Windows Movie Maker, but you can use iMovie if you have a Mac. This will get you by if you need simple video splitting, trimming, adding captions, etc. If you want fancier stuff it gets more difficult as you'll have to invest some time in learning and some money on the software.

Go with Hitfilm, they have free & paid options - The free version is Hitfilm Express.
I think it's the best free video editing software you can get.

They also have a ton of tutorial videos to help you learn it & are constantly coming out with new tutorials.
