Facebook group vs list building

Hey guys,

I am wondering now. In facebook group you can build your followers and audience, you can create a message and all people who likes or follows the group will get it. Same is for list building service like aweber, get response. For example, nowadays I rarely optin to any list and I better chose to follow on facebook, its more easier to check group, I have ability to communicate with other people in the group.

So i am thinking now, what is the biggest differences between fb group and list in autoresponder service?

Maybe facebook groups become more useful than list in autoresponder?

what is your thoughts?

Facebook groups aren't an asset that you own.

Your email list is an asset that you own.

Post too much on FB and you'll be sent to FB jail for a while.

Do something FB considers 'wrong' and they'll close your group, without warning.

Don't build your business on someone else's land.

    I do both.

    My preference is list building!

No one can take your list away. If Facebook decides one day that your group isn't acceptable it could be gone.

When someone asks to join a group you can ask 3 questions.

One of those questions I ask is for their email. If they don't provide it, I still let them into the group and then in the group I have several ways to still try and collect it.

Anyway, I would focus more on list building, but there's no reason you can't do both. I've spent the last 17 years promoting offers via email and it's hard to beat.

You cyber squat, on Facebook. Meaning you are bound by all types of rules since you are a guest, not owner.

You own your email list. It is an asset. Yours, in essence. Baring a few rules from different services, you call the shots, share the value, and more important, you get into folk's email inboxes with email marketing.

Do some social, but focus heavily on your self-hosted Wordpress blog and building your list as you own these 2 assets.

As Michael mentioned, Facebook can be finicky with what they deliver slaps for. I was recently put in Facebook jail for a 5 day period right as a campaign was closing and it really mucked things up.

I posted no differently than I always have, and broke no rules that I can identify. My only theory was that my frequency went up one day and maybe it was too high?

So in the end, why did it turn out was I penalized? That's the beauty of it! I still have no idea, because Facebook doesn't tell you! They also can't remove a temporary ban once it's been implemented, even if it was wrongful.

Another big thing to consider is delivery. You will never - and I mean never - reach everyone on your Facebook group, because Facebook wants you to pay for reach. An organic post to a group will only ever reach a fraction of that group's subscribers, no matter how good it is, or how engaging it is.

While your emails will also never be opened by everyone on your list, at least you have a relative level of control over this. If you aren't getting opens, you can ask yourself why and alter headlines, content, etc., in order to try and up your rate. When you place an organic post on a Facebook group, it's going to get the reach it gets, with no explanation, and that's that.

Go with the Diabl0 strategy and do both. Never stop building the assets you own and control, but there is no reason to not also build groups if that's something your market or niche is well suited for.

The concept of ownership is interesting I mean really own someone's email address.

An email provider can go bust, a system can crash, a person can give a false address or give a dummy account or change job even change website what value is that email address they gave you then?

You are also likely to be using someone else's autoresponder and so you have to play by their rules with what you can send and how much you can send it. You delivery rates are also impacted by the thousands or hundreds of thousands of other people who are using the same service.

The email after travelling through other peoples servers and copper wiring is delivered to an email account where the email company can choose to block your email send it into a promotions or spam folder. They can also change the rules on what they do and when they do it as often as they like.

Very few people mention this kind of thing when talking about list building but use the same reasons 'other peoples property' 'other peoples rules' as reasons as to why you shouldn't do something else.

I would always do both as this increases the chances of visibility and can increase trust and brand recognition

    naviown,

You want to control your list, if they are in your autoresponder you have control over them, can promote anything to them and can move the list if needed.

On social media you don't control the list. The rules change all the time, you account can be blocked, the group could be removed, there are so many variables that you have no control over. Also even though in theory everyone is your group "could" see your message, not everyone will. Again social media controls who sees what.

Bottom line, you want to always be building a list in your autoresponder.

The old adage that "the money is in the list" is so true, FB groups can be a very useful too in your IM arsenal. If you are sneaky you can download FB group member emails and add them to the list (black hat).

Oops shouldn't I have mentioned that last part?

I would say do both. For reach wise I would think with recent changes to organic reach at Facebook you'd hit more people with list building

I got this trick from a marketer: put your freebie link in a pinned Facebook group post & set your first autoresponder sequence to refer new subscribers to your FB group link to get your freebie.

This way you will build both email list & FB group members.

The advantage of using FB group is that it has push notifications. So every new post you share on your group would show up on your members' notification tab which is hard to miss out.

I have noticed groups becoming less active lately after recent FB changes. Most people in groups join but take no action. Email is better for marketing, FB better for networking.

If you can build a nice size Facebook group. By all means do it. Just be sure the group has an interest in what you promote.

    Why not doing both?

Grow a FB group and occasionally offer freebies that will make them sign up to your mailing list.

You can't control facebook groups and people will be there for their own agenda, not yours. If you check out any make money online group you get so may people posting in there. Would you want that for your group?

With email marketing you can build a relationship which will help you grow your business.

    Quite simple really...

You list is your asset something you personally own yourself. With your list you can make more if you build good relationship and trust with your list.

Facebook is just an avenue that you don't have 100 percent control of because of the changes that facebook make every now and then. Moreover facebook groups are now becoming less active because of the endless spamming by members.

I personally haven't read the comments but this is my course of action...

I'm currently building a group and ask questions on the beginning before they are allowed to join.

One question is if they would like knowledge bombs if so email here

    Add to list

Pretty good because as stated by the couple comments I did read- you don't have full control. I find this is a great ethical way and averaging about 30% of group members on list. All have been added for
    Free which is nice!

    Are you kidding bro?

Facebook is not your own property. Your FB account may block any day.
Email list is your own property. You can send email any times you want.

In FB Group, all the guys are not ready to buy your product. They are not ready to leave Facebook.
