what is considered a good conversion rate?

Hi ,

I'm new to this. In the past two weeks I've written several articles (8) promoting a new product. The vendor's records show that I have sent 167 people to his website, but no sales. It is a new product just launched two weeks ago.

Is this normal? I asked the vendor for conversion data but he hasn't responded. I'm sure it is a Clickbank account but I can't find them on Clickbank.

Am I impatient? Not one sale out of 167 that have visited his site. Need help in understanding this.

    For ClickBank, 1% conversion is good. Some products will convert better, some worse.

    I once went to a casino and at the roulette table - got 11 reds in a row!

    Statistics is crazy with small numbers. And 167 is a small number. I would recommend waiting till 400 visits.

    That being said, here are a few things you could check:

    1. But of course - check if the affiliate tracking links are working fine

    2. Select a product with a good salesletter

    3. And research and see how many others are promoting the site. And how they are doing it.

    4. If you've submitted all the 8 articles to the same place, maybe change the place of submission. It may be the quality of traffic that is poor...

    5. Make sure your articles are written with buyer intent in mind. Nextag.com makes the same amount of money as facebook.com does - but doesn't even get a fraction of that traffic. Why? Because people go to nextag.com only with the intention to buy. But people never go to facebook with an intention to buy. So you need to make sure your article has keywords with high buying intent probability. No terms like free.

    I would say you want to at least convert at 1 - 2% but if all elements in the sales funnel are good then you could easily hit the 3 - 5% mark. Then you'd concentrate on bringing more traffic to the mix. Conversions are the first priority though after an initial effort with traffic.

    I would say, check that everything is working as it should be. Then analyse the vendors sales page. This is critical. Would you buy from it?

    Let it run for a couple of weeks and see if it starts converting, if not, leave it in place but choose another product after doing some more research.

    When a product does convert for you keep driving traffic to it but always set another product up. Once you have a handful of successful products earning you money you'll have multiple revenue streams.

    I suggest you wait for few more days and see how it goes... The conversion varies from niche to niche and since you are promoting a new product, it will take some time before you start seeing results... I hope you have picked up a good product that would convert well.. There are lot of crap products out there and you need to pick a winner in your niche to get best results...

      Thank all of you for responding. I guess I am being a little impatient. I will wait.

      Andy, I did check the links. They are all OK. I hadn't gone to the sales page since I started this. I went there and discovered that the video he has on the sales page is very staccato in its loading and display. Every one to two seconds it blurps. After about ten seconds of this, you want out! I visited other sales pages with videos and don't have a problem.

      I sent the vendor an email describing my computer setup and the annoying video. That could be a problem.

    1 or 2% are decent. 3% or more is great.

    DO NOT give up on a product too early. There was a thread similar to this here and I saw people say to give up way too soon IMO. When something converts at 1:100 that doesn't mean like clockwork every 100 clicks you will see a sale. You could go 1500 clicks and see no sales and then in the next 500 see 20 and you still get that same 1:100 ratio.

    Also, don't assume that the program is the problem. It very well be the way you are sending them the traffic. Are you properly setting up expectations for the product, etc?

    Don't just assume the sponsor is crap if you don't get immediate results, especially with a very small sample size.

    UPDATE!

    Thanks everyone for your helpful and encouraging advice.

    This morning the vendor responded to my two queries. The conversion rate is .85% and he says it will improve as they tweak the sales page. Also, he received the query about the bad video on the sales page. He thanked me and promised to get it fixed.

    I'm happy now! Not as concerned.

    As conversions go it depends on the product market and
    the cost to a great extent. Although conversion is a
    great measure of how well your sales letter is doing
    a better gauge is ROI--Return On Investment. If you're
    making a decent profit then don't get to worried about
    your conversion.

    For example, you'll get a lower conversion on organic
    SE traffic than from PPC. But you are paying more
    (most times) for PPC than organic SE traffic.

    As far as my copywriting clients are concerned I use
    PPC traffic to measure conversion rates.

    For an ebook cost >$50 anything above 3% conversion
    is great. For a product >$500, 1% conversion is great.
    So as the price goes up you can expect a lower conversion
    rate even though you may be making more money.

    As mentioned before, you need close to 1000 visits before
    you can get an accurate measure for the conversion.

  • The typical clickbank product (ebook or video tutorials between $37 and $97), and assuming a nicely crafted sales page and a decent product, gets around 1% to 2% conversion. Anything above 2% is VERY good if they can sustain it in the long run. Anything below 0.5% is rather weak if the traffic is somewhat targeted.

    You can't make any conclusion with 8 articles. Plus it depends on your market, the price, etc... your best bet is to build a list.

    Or you doing that or just direct linking?

    My suggestion: Do an "article blast" for three products in the niche (just choose two other competitors) and see what happens.

    But build your list if you are not doing it already.

    And don't hesitate to ask the merchant for help with this.
