Anyone doing "Directory sites" ?

Hi there,

I am thinking about starting a niche directory site and looking for others that are doing that with success. I am seeking inspiration about how to price a listing. Example could be "handicap friendly hotels in London". Would you charge the hotels per month per listing/landing page or, if technology provides it, list them for free and charge them per click?

I am very early at stage and looking for all kinds of experiences with concepts like these.

Thanks,
J.

I don't know what you are getting at but directory sites has generally all kind of niches.

And if you are looking for any specific topic such as 'Hotels' or 'Places to stay' then you should stick to the channels where your customers reside. Such as travel websites or sites that books flights.

I am seeking experience with driving these Directory sites - e.g. can they make a decent income? Good or better that e.g. creating a digital product? (which is much easier)....

yelp.com; zillow.com, findlaw.com... What do you think of them?

What kind of resources you have?

If you don't have many, you'd have to find a small subniche, wouldn't you? Do you know of one such subniche?

Do you know how to get people to visit your directory?

The Google is full of directories that never make it higher than page 5.

About 2 years ago, maybe 3, there were a bunch of people into directories. Don't remember the threads, but they had lots of good ideas. So, I suggest, you dig some into warrirorforum.

There's a guy who had a good directory... Local... Can't think of it, but he posted at different times, months apart, about his directory... Was good to see his thinking over time, while he was developing his directory... He did post on some of the threads John Durham posted.

Years ago, directory sites were the rage ... not so much anymore. Of course, there are exceptions, but generally, to make a directory site profitable, you need to be able to drive massive amounts of traffic - that's what your advertisers pay for. Directory sites that sit in a vacuum without significant traffic just collect dust.

Years ago (maybe ten?), I owned two directory sites. I have moved on from that model. Spam was a constant problem, advertiser's didn't stay long, and the amount of money netted compared with the work involved, was not worth it. If you have a huge marketing budget, which I didn't, you may be able to pull it off ... but I wouldn't recommend the model in today's economy. The directory sites that are profitable are mostly large industry leaders that have promoted heavily.

If you don't have a large budget, and if you don't know how to drive lots of targeted traffic, you will struggle mightily.
