I Am Looking For A Partner!

I really am but I want to use that to make a point. There is a HUGE difference between wanting to find a partner to work with and mentoring someone. I have made posts in the past looking for someone to partner with on projects and I am amazed at the responses.

When you look for a partner, you are looking for someone who can bring something to the table. You are looking for someone who can share the workload. You are looking for someone whose talents and skills complement your own. You are NOT looking for someone who you can teach. That is called mentoring.

There is a time and place for mentoring and I try to give a lot of my time to helping other people along the way. I absolutely believe everyone should give to others and help other people. There is a time and a place for that but it is NOT when I am looking for a working partner.

Every time I make it known that I am looking for someone to partner with, I get responses from all over the place, i.e. PMs, emails, Skypes, etc. and a lot of them have no experience whatsoever. A good example of this is Kevin Riley... I get tired of carrying him but he looks so homely and lonely that I just feel so sorry for him.

BTW, have you ever noticed how friendly people are on Skype? I am constantly getting contact requests from people like Sexy Sue, Lonely In The West, Free and Easy and people like that. I just wish everyone was as happy and friendly as there are!

Take care!

Is that Gosselin as in, "I need to put some Gosselin in my car?"

I like the ones who bring a good bottle of red wine to the table.

Here I would have thought you were going to say

"I like the ones who bring hamster food to the table"

Unless of course the wine is for the hamsters.

I am not sure I'd want to partner with somebody from Eugene, Oregon...

I was there once and a very mean policeman caught me speeding on a deserted road and wanted to take me to the court!
Although the IMers are supposed to be better persons than the policemen, eh?

(Well, I am not going to tell publicly what was the outcome of the policeman's action!)

p.s. Your blog's About page looks ugly in FF on a Mac. The sidebar and the main content area overlap.

    Hi Chris,

You just hit a homerun on that one.

    There's really a big difference between finding a partner versus a mentor/mentee.

I posted a thread "Mentor needed" before and looking back I might say that what I'm actually looking for was a partner. I had skills and knowledge that I was offering but being new in IM what I really needed was someone to show me how to use those skills.

    Really enjoyed your post.

Do you mean to tell me that Kevin Riley has taken advantage of you? And you've been carrying him all this time?

Oh you poor dear! Just can't trust anyone these days now can ya.

What I'd like to know is:

How many pockets did it take to carry all those hamsters?

        Hey Debra,

God only knows! You know he's got a ton of them don't you?

        Hey Martin,

That's what that cheese is for. If Chris feeds them that wine without something solid, imagine what trouble Kevin will have.

Kevin lives on a remote, mystical mountain in Japan with no mains electricity. To run his 37 computers he wanted an environmentally friendly, animal-powered dynamo.

So, being a good IMer, he split tested various animals and found the most productive and efficient were hamsters. (He was going to use horses but the costs of building such huge treadmills were prohibitive!)

His life story, "Hamsters, Electricity And The Web", will soon be available from Amazon.

True, a partner and a mentor are two different areas, however it is possible for each partner to learn from each other taking each to a higher level.

You should let us know what is already on your table, other than the hamsters and red wine, and what you would like to see on your table, besides more red wine, and maybe the right person will magically appear.

    White wine ... forget it

    Red wine ... yes

Whiskey or whisky ... it will depend on whether JT is buying it or not

What is it with Kevin and the hamsters?
Manda, For many years psycharists have been trying to figure out that exact same thing with no luck. Suffice it to say that Mr. Riley takes the word "perversion" to an all-time high!

Ok I knew I was going to regret asking

It does beg the question why hamsters as opposed to I don't know squirrals or something.......but hey since the purple cow concept worked for Seth Godin maybe Kevin is onto something and we'll all be rushing to get our own small furry animals.

It is not the relationship Kevin has with his hamsters that is weird, it is the one that he has with Chris Sutton. Kevin uses Chris to feed the hamsters and keep them in line. Of course, John Rogers has to lead Sutton to the feeding trough and then change the diapers on .....

Sounds like a good offer, partner with Chris and you get Kevin too. Glad I looked through this tread, first time I have seen what Rod Cortez looks like, don't know how long your picture has been up Rod, but it's the first time I have seen it.
