Using Humour In Your Internet Marketing...

Hi everyone,

I've noticed recently that a lot of internet marketers seem to have very little in the way of personality or life in their presentations, particularly when they make videos and slideshows etc.

So in thinking about this I came up with the following notion.

I'm FIRMLY of the belief that if you build something uniquely funny and entertaining into your internet marketing then you stand to be a lot more successful.

It's like car salesmen who have all the one-liners and are full of charm... they'll regularly get the sale. The guys who can make the girl laugh are the ones with the highest chances with them. The entertaining teachers are always the kids favourites.

I think this principle applies online too.

As long as you aren't making fun at anything or anyone and the humour is kept clean and unoffensive then you really are stacking the odds in your favour.

Funny websites, jokes and videos are the one thing which spread most virally online right now so if you can build this into your internet marketing then I reckon you're probably onto a winner.

It doesn't matter if you don't think you're a particularly funny person... just try new angles with everything. Before you write something, try tweaking it and making it a bit "off-the-wall".

Mike Filsaime and Anik Singal did it recently for their Launch Tree (I think!) in which they did some impressions of the guys from the Myth Busters TV show.

I've done it in my latest free I.M. eBook (www.MarketingMeltdown.com). I've just taken a totally different spin on everything and attempted a comedy video.. I think it works anyway.

Everyone loves the funny guy so if you can make people laugh.. then you're half way to getting them on your side an making a sale... I reckon.

Any thoughts or further ideas of how you build this into I.M. businesses?

Personality marketing is a smart approach...just remember that people like to get to know you and your REAL personality. If you're a humorous person in real life and like to make people laugh, then you should carry that into your marketing.

Harris Fellman does some great personality marketing and comes up with new characters per product launch. Some might be turned off by it, others fall in love with the idea...and such is the way of marketing that you can't please everyone all the time.

    Marc,

One of the funny things about humor (pun intended) is perception.

Everyone does not react the same to humor. For a variety of reasons. A primary one is age. My 35 year old son sends me links to videos he finds humorous. My reaction is less than he expects.

Culture is another problem. Something regarded as funny in one country may be seen as disrespectful elsewhere.

Environment is another. Not in the global sense. Something may be humorous in one physical context but not another. Watching a skateboarder run into a police car on a video may be humorous; if it's your son it isn't.

The charming, jocular car salesman is likely very good at sizing up people. He probably doesn't joke to the same degree with all customers.

Some markets may lend themselves better to a humorous approach thatn others. It's not universal.

If, however, you can find that market amenable to humor you'll likely slay them.

    PS. I made girls laugh-mostly at me, I suspect-for years. I was almost 27 when I married.

I've known a lot of car guys over the years. And you know what? Some of the funniest ones in front of customers before the sale were the most serious and "all business" types when everyone sat down to make the deal. And some were total jackasses in "real" life (away from the job). What am I getting at? Well, I guess you can be an actor and make the sale using humor. But I'm guessing that the naturals are the ones who actually enjoy life the most.

    Which reminds me...

I'd rather die in my sleep, like Grandpa, than screaming in terror... like the passengers in his car.

      Marc,

Watched the vid. Love what you are doing, because most marketers have zero personality and are following a template. Ok, 2 things:

If you can carry that personality into all the follow ups and all you do, I would faithfully buy from you again and again.

Second, don't be mad at me, but never mention "failure". I think this is a mistake and I don't get why marketers attempt this "reverse failure" theory or whatever it is.

To sum up, I think you are in the 1% of marketers who are doing something unique.
