Internet marketing will be dead soon

I just read a responce to someones question here, the response was for new comers to hurry because internet marketing is in it's final years. I vowed to never give up and to learn as much as possible but that statement really hit me hard and it hurt. My question is how true could this statement be and if the person who wrote that statement is reading, please explain what you mean.

    • Unless the computer is going out of fashion already and there is a way to telepathically communicate, I don't see this happening anytime soon - although there is the 2012 factor where the world is going to end, so perhaps we should all quit our jobs and dreams and live it up while we can.

Ok, I need to go now as I always wanted to jump out of a plane with no parachute.

    • A whole bunch of this same sort of misinformation gets passed around about backlinks, too. People will say something like this, but give absolutely no evidence to back it up; all they've got is personal speculation and conjecture, or they are parroting someone else's speculation and conjecture that they've heard.

  • It will never die, maybe change a bit, but die?

    Never.

Well like someone said, until the internet runs out.
  • Internet Marketing will only die when the internet dies.

There is no faster growing industry than internet marketing. Every man and his dog in the offline world wants to bring their business online and everyone who doesn't - doesn't have access to the internet yet!

Internet Marketing is growing like crazy!
  • Come on man, don't believe that kind of stupid stuff.. IM has not even started in some countries so how can it die so easily? The only thing that can happen and has happened in the past is that few methods or strategies would get saturated.. You only need to think out of the box and come up with new strategies to keep the ball rolling...

    Long Live IM...
  • As long as you are promoting honestly without outlandish claims all will be good. It's the scammers who need to worry.

  • There was a rather famous marketer, won't mention names, who claimed it was the end back in 2006.

I believe the rumors of its (internet marketing) death (and impending death for that matter) have been greatly exaggerated

Though I should add one more caveat to those above me who claim IM will die when the internet runs out, true, but I'll also add or until government sticks their big nose in and forcibly ends it.

    • Let's look at this objectively from both sides.

All throughout history, things have come and gone, or if not gone, have
become so obsolete that you hardly see them around.

I'm sure there are still people who buy typewriters, but how many old style
typewriters are now sold for offices in comparison to 40 years ago? Don't
most people use computers? So that is an industry that, if not dead, has
      certainly seen better days.

I could give other examples but I think you get the point.

Evolution itself dictates that things will change. Look back through history
and you will see all the changes. 45s and LPs replaced by CDs. And now,
with downloadable music, how long before we just stop making physical
CDs? Could it happen? There was a time nobody thought they'd stop making
      records.

Point is, nobody knows what will happen to the Internet. Regulations
could come about that would make it so costly to run an online business
legally that, for most of us, it would put us out of business.

Could it happen? Sure...anything can happen. Anybody who says otherwise
      hasn't lived long enough.

Will it happen? Again, it might.

But...and this is the key point...does anybody know if it will happen?

Unless you are psychic, there is no way one person on this planet today
knows if Internet marketing itself is going to die someday.

So don't worry about things that you have no control of.

What matters is this. Today...Internet marketing exists and is thriving.

So live for today...plan for tomorrow...and adjust if and when things
      change.

All worrying is going to do is give you ulcers.

  • This is the BEST time to get into Internet marketing. We have an entire young generation that is growing up with cell phones, ipods, and computers. These things are becoming almost standard issue by age 12.

As soon as they are old enough to get credit cards they will be very used to technology which means they will be doing a lot shopping/buying online.
    • [1] reply

    • That's the truth there is a whole new wave of people coming to the marketplace soon. Not to mention with technology getting easier to use more baby boomers are becoming more comfortable with the internet and buying online. My Mom just got her first lap top not to long ago and now she even has an iphone.

I think we have just opened the door to this industry!
  • I believe it will evolve, maybe into something that doesn't even look like marketing.. then isn't that the holy grail of marketing?

  • Internet marketing will never die! It's a cheaper method of marketing then paper/mail marketing. It's too easy to drive traffic to one's blog and/or website instead of sending them something through snail-mail. It's not going anywhere!
  • Internet marketing is dead .

    Keywords are not important .

    List building is outdated .

Long sales letters do not work.

Short sales letters do not work.

Scam artist leave the internet ... vow never to return .

An honest marketer can not make it online .

  • "We're promised instant catalog shopping--just point and click for great deals. We'll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet--which there isn't--the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople."

  • Marketing will never die. As long as people have goods and services to sell, somebody will make money selling them.

I guess the internet could theoretically die, but I don't see that happening any time soon. If it does, the marketers will simply move on to the next medium.
  • Well, it just so happens that I was talking to the internet this morning and do you want to know what he/she told me... "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." Count on it!
  • Internet marketing won't die ... although it may change. Something I see happening in the future is more localization ... marketing to specific areas rather than nationwide. Seems to be more effective overall even now ... Google gives a pretty good boost with 'Local Business Search.'
  • One look at history will provide you with your answer.

There was a time when an individual could found an oil company. Try it today.

Look up how many airlines were started up by individuals at the beginning of the commercial flight era (c. 1945-1960), then see how many have launched successful airlines in the past 40 years (1970-2009)?

Same with the automobile in the U.S. Look how many auto makers launched in the early days...well over 2,000.

List of defunct United States automobile manufacturers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

How many exist today? Two. (Chrysler no longer counts.)

Other examples abound if you dig for them. It's one of the reasons I love history so much. You can generally get a pretty good idea of where you are going, if you're willing to look where you've been.

IM will still be around. It will evolve, but it will still be around. The barrier of entry will grow higher in time, and the success rate will fall - just as it has in every other time in history that a new business paradigm blossomed, then matured.

    • Internet marketing dies when people stop buying things online.. The only way that would happen is if the worlds banks were to run out of money and send the world into global economic meltdown. What are the chances of that happening, huh? ...

What do you mean that almost happened last year this time?...
  • yep it's dying run for the hills, more money for me,

internet marketing isn't going anywhere shady business practices and people who take part in them will be dead
  • I get tired when I hear "the death of" everything, when you look at it, Adsense is still here, Affiliate marketing is still going strong, you can still "creatively" sell digital products on eBay and internet marketing isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

When I get emailed "the death of" email I wonder what they're trying to pitch me. Sometimes it's for shock value and to go against the grain, to be a "contrarian" flying in the faces of the majority for the purposes of setting yourself apart.

Now I'm sure you've all received the FTC email about paid endorsements and testimonials, maybe this was what the OP was talking about but trust me, internet marketing is here to stay and even if there are changes, will only evolve.

    • You forgot to mention that PPC was dying too
  • If you'd believe that, consider these:
Has every song been sung? Do you still get junk mail from companies in your mailbox? That's been a saturated market for decades, yet it's obviously still working for them. Has everything that can be invented been invented?

Last I checked, affiliate marketing was a $14 billion per year industry and growing by leaps and bounds. Sure, the rules are getting more stringent and the field is more competitive, but that's a good thing. Competition makes everyone better. Competition improves quality. Competition is our friend.

If you die in theory...are you really dead?

The rumors of the death of the internet were theoretically exaggerated.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • However i think it will become a lot more saturated and you will have to work a lot more for every dollar. It will be tougher all the time since everything gets easier. Today some old granny can whip out a webpage and do some simple marketing.
  • If some of my competitors felt this way I'd make more money.

It's absolute bull****, the Internet is a channel a medium, much like television, print, display, etc. As long as there is a direct path between consumer and advertiser - there will be a market and marketers.
  • Why people make claims is beyond me.

    Probably just to get attention?

Either way no, it won't be dead soon.

Unless of course one of those comets (which are meant to have destroyed the Earth about twice per year since comets were discovered...) hits the Earth and kills us all

Either that or the *truth* is simply that some people just make silly claims (like this one) to get attention, and it's usually best to ignore them.

    • First you have to understand that it's not "internet marketing"...the marketing principles are the same regardless of the media you use...radio, telephone, internet, direct mail, person to person, text, fax, a retail shopfront, a market stall, a door to door salesman etc etc.

When you learn good internet marketing principles you're also learning good basic marketing principles.

Even if the media changes good marketers will always be in high demand so focus on becoming a good marketer and you'll always have a way to make money.

Now to address the specific question...

Using the internet for commerce is the fastest growing business sector in the world and at this point that growth won't be slowing down for a long time yet.

People who master using internet marketing strategies to make real sales and profits are going to be in tremendous demand for many years to come.

      Kindest regards,

  • What was the reason for the person stating that internet marketing was dead? Were they just trying to get attention or were they trying to promote their own product.

Some people will try anything to stand out. The only thing that will happen to internet marketing is that it will evolve as the internet evolves. It should be interesting over the net 5 years as things chnage but I doubt it will die.
  • Truth ahead!

There will always be problems, and new ones are created as we advance.

Companies/Product creators will always need affiliates.

Google's main income is its advertising network. It will always be around, long after the internet as we know it dies. We will have access to that network. Always.

There will always be user-created content hubs, and we will always have access to these. (ie. The web 2.0 will be forever.)

PCs are going nowhere. We will always the need the tactile response of a full-sized keyboard. Every single office in the world. We will always need to read information off screens bigger than those on phones. PCs. Are. Going. Nowhere.

If you need more proof, get out now.

    • Rule Number 1 in Internet Marketing.

Think about WHY people say what they do.

Offhand I can think of 3 reasons why that person said what they did

      1. Trying to create controversy to sell a product
      2. They're really stupid
      3. They are trying to reduce the competition by getting people to give up

"Soon" is also not very specific. We will all be be dead soon so should we all just lie down and die now?

The real "killer" will be Government Intervention in the Form of Taxes. This will have a huge impact on Affiliate Marketing. But as long as there is an internet companies will figure out ways to leverage it.
  • I can't do these type of questions anymore.....sighs.... :/
  • I don't see Internet Marketing dying - however, the way we now see or do Internet Marketing may change. In this sense yes, it will die. But just as most things pass away, new things are reborn or made anew. At some point we may not use certain strategies or methods because they no longer work the way they once did, but we gain new ones as we gain new insights.

And I have a feeling it's going to rock!

Just send me your Cpanel login information and we'll arrange the domain transfer's for you. This is a limited time offer so ACT NOW.

  • As long as capitalism survives, internet marketing will survive. The internet is just a vehicle that humans utilize for communication. As of right now that communication is free flowing.

The biggest threat to the internet being a marketing tool for anyone with a good idea, is intrusive government.
  • We all know what many have said is the oldest profession. But think about it, a negotiation or transaction for mutual benefit took place. So bartering, trading or something similar took place. In the end it was a sale. Sales is the true oldest profession.
As long as people can communicate via any source, sales will take place. Sales, are necessary whether it be for your labor or a product makes for success or not and pays to bring us most every material thing we want including the Internet.
Sales will never die online as long as people can communicate with each other.
  • You got to be careful about reading articles from mad internet marketers. These people have tried Internet Marketing and fail. Instead of saying "ok I failed at this so let me try something else" they try to bash Internet marketing. Watch out for the naysayers they are everywhere.
  • Well, I'm going to take the position that IM is going to become an inaccessible source of resources for MOST people getting into it, and the reason why is one simple thing : page rank. Google's page rank algorythm is a very dangerous thing(do you guys know the name of the book that was published recently with this as it's thesis?). It literally means that the few websites(relatively fiew when considering the number of websites on the web) with the high page rank can literally out compete ALL of our websites. If CNN decides to write an article on the mind body connection, even though there are whole websites dedicated to that concept, CNN's article will get ranked above it and thus get more visitors.

Now, if a few websites, that aren't even based on investigating the mind-body connection can cement their position in the top five on Google, that's bad news. Because it means that for the little guy, the guy who doesn't have money to spend but who wants to create a website that assembles current studies, features mp3's, televised debates etc--cannot compete with the big boys.

Google's page rank is a dangerous thing. It will eventually lead, once SEO becomes more popular, to the websites with the money being able to dominate every search. And if the info that I got at the wordpress conference is right, that people do not even read past the first 6 entries on Google but instead change up their search options, then this means that the avg. Internet marketer is going to have a big challenge.

I like the optimism and the entrepreneurial spirit on this form, but we often forget that with page rank the way it is, a pyramid is GOING to develop.

Shout out to the brother who pointed out the automobile industry--good insight.

  • Internet marketing won't die so soon. Internet isn't available to a lot of people, and even if internet is available, you'd be surprised that they might not be as tech savvy. There is still lots of room for more people to come online. Also, consider the fact that many developing countries are catching up in their ecnomomy, and more and more people are able to come online. There is just plenty of room. Even if IM were to end one day, I don't think it is very soon.

    Nicholas C.
  • I hope all of these responses answer your question.
  • Seriously Warriors,

Who can shut the internet down? Our political leaders? World citizens that sign a petition? (I highly doubt that) I think in the future, we may no longer even need to type. But seriously guys, who actually thinks the internet can get shut down? and if so, how?
  • Using the internet to market a business is still in its infancy, it's only 14 years old really...and many people are just now catching on.

If the Internet were to collapse (unlikely, it's a HUGE network of computers and pages linked to each other) ...then I guess we would just apply the same marketing skills to another media format (you aren't JUST relying on the Internet to market are you?).

    But then there's December 21st, 2012...hmmm...

  • The only way this could ever happen is if Corporate America could ever legislate the little guy out of the market. We can't rule that out but unless we form some type of political lobby (there might be one but I am not familiar with it) to protect our interests it could happen.

Remember, most people are not selling online and if government could sell the fact that we (as in the general population) could benefit from a certain tax that would make it less favorable for me and you to market online, then we could face an uphill battle.
  • I like the market we have now, but don't get too cocky warriors.....unless we form some political muscle there is always a wolf at the door.

They will be a staying power for a long time. But this new company I'm waiting for will leap frog over Google like the first automobiles did to the horse and buggy.

    • You do realize that the death of IM would mean that we would be going back to paper catalogs, dialing shops to find that elusive book about eskimo interior decorating, hours of added opinion seeking and squeezing the truth out of overzealous shop seller and not to mention driving around for hours and wasting half of your Saturday to find that one thing.

Either the above or the complete death of commerce and back to trading sheep skins for milk and apples.

This thread appears time and again on this forum, being here for more then a couple of months gives me the certainty to say that these kind of threads are either attention seeking or just unfounded and completely illogical pieces of useless information.

  • Is this serious? It's not April 1st.

Come on.... Do people really listen to such BS phrases.

It's just people trying to sound like they're saying something new - it's desperate marketing.

They don't actually expect anyone to believe it - they're just trying to get attention.

Just get on with your own stuff and ignore anyone who says they know what's in store in the future regarding technology or business.

By feeding such crap you're just making it worse and causing others to get distracted.

There are people saying God doesn't exist but do you see Christians worrying about whether it's true?

The only time anything like this can affect you is if you have no sense of your own business and future - it's people playing on the insecurities of others.

Don't give them that power - get on with moving yourself forward.

  • People miss guide. So don't let them overwhelm yourself. IM is never gonna be dead or end. yeah it may change somewhat but can't be end. There are many countries which are unaware of internet marketing.
A lot of competition may has change people perception about IM. But it is never gonna end.
Lets join hands to vanish these kind of rumors.
  • Nope. Not going to happen. It is too fundamental.
  • The only way Internet marketing will die is if the Internet dies. Unless the world all turns red that just ain't gonna happen until the world itself dies... but then there will be another one in its place; whether there will be a need for an Internet then is up for debate and speculation!
  • internet marketing is ALWAYS about constant change and adaption. If someone cannot adapt to changes they better get another job!

( Furthermore, i dont have ANY reason to assume that IM would be "dead" any time soon...the opposite is the case really )
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I think It could be..Nothink will last forever..But I'm not sure if it will happens soon...
Actually Not only internet marketing will be dead soon...Our life will be the same..Many People say in 2012 the worldh will end...he3....
  • IM will die when the internet dies, and I certainly don't see that
happening. I mean can you imagine our world now without the
    internet?
  • QUESTION:

How can something be approaching death, when it hasn't even been truly born yet?

    Go figure.
  • I wonder if there were people in the sixties saying that Television marketing would be dead soon...
  • What was the point in bumping a year old thread, thats my question.
  • Sounds ridiculous to me. When I started creating my products a few years ago, my biggest concern was "how many people are actually going to spend money to download an e-book."

Now we've got the iPad, Kindle, etc...people are getting CONDITIONED to reading content on monitors and devices.

And my sales are better than ever...

The aspect that is constantly shifting is SEO. That's the hard thing to stay on top of. I certainly don't think that the idea of selling products online is in any sort of trouble.

    • Every time I see one of these "Death of xxxxxx" statements, it's followed by a sales letter offering the replacement.

The Death of Sales Letters --> Sales Video course

The Death of Email Marketing --> some desktop widget

The Death of SEO --> banner advertising course

Just a couple of examples -- sales letters are still making money, and email marketing is still going strong.

Like someone else said, follow the money and find the motivation behind the statement...
  • Hey,

Don't listen to that nonsense. While the internet is live and while large numbers have access to it, there will be internet marketing. Lots of people online equals lots of opportunities to sell.

The response you read is a lot like saying that TV or billboard advertising is dying out. Sure, both with evolve and have high and low points, but they'll both exist for many generations to come.

The internet itself is still growing massively. As a little side thought, you might want to check out these live stats from Gary Hayes:

    The Count | PERSONALIZE MEDIA

If the internet (and Internet Marketing) is dead, it's got a funny way of showing it.

Hope that helps you renew the faith a little!
  • I don't think so.. Internet marketing will never die even though the economy is as bad as it is right now. we need computers and internet everywhere.

    • It is pretty much obvious unemployment will remain high for the next 2 - 10 years at around 15-20 percent. Not the 8 percent the propagandist are saying.

This means that as unemployment insurance runs out and unemployment remains high, it is inevitable that more and more people are going to turn to the Internet to build a business.

That means that Internet Marketing is going to grow to unbelievable levels.

And you can expect that their is going to be huge power plays to control and tax the Internet as these large over bloated governments get greedier and hungrier for more revenue.

      Like an Internet VAT tax.

God Bless the Internet and long live IM

Internet marketing is far from dead. It has just begun. Here's a little food for thought: 1) there is an emergence of new networking sites and more and more people are joining them (even Grandma & Grandpa ) 2) more and more people seeking information online 3)something interesting has happened in just recent years--when you drive around your local communities what do you see different on storefront signs? Owners has added websites. People no longer write down only the phone numbers they are writing web addresses. Offline & Online work together these days. No worries!
  • Internet marketing will die??

    Yeah right!
  • So long as their are people buying and selling (which there has been since the age of time) then its up to us to find the medium of which its taking place upon and leverage it to our benefits.

    1,000 posts!

    • Congrats on the milestone. Since I was the first to offer congrats, I win. You owe me $1.27.
  • Nonsense if anything Internet marketing is only going to grow as country like China get richer and more open another billion or so customers are going to be available
  • it is just IMPOSSIBLE
  • Yep, IM is dead...

...because no one buys anything online these days, and of course, like millions of businesses, none of you are interested in selling online. :p

So yes, of course it's dead!
  • I just read an article in Forbe Magazine (I think) or one of the many business magazines I subscribe too that they predict 79.6 Million People will start a Home Business Online over the next 3 years. That figure blew me away and I wrote it down in my little notebook.

Internet Market is NOT going to be dead anytime soon in my opinion... it's going to grow exponentially as corporate jobs become the thing of the past!

    • Just in the last year we have spent over $10,000 on servers as we need them via Ebay.

I bought my son a Jeep in Florida and found that in Google and searched for a transporter via Google too.

The last move I made I found the moving company via the Internet.

If there are a lot of people like me the Internet Marketing will be around a long ti8me.

This is a great thread. It is better than any focus group from my Ad days in the 80s. I am learning important stuff.

      Thanks to all.

    • Maybe it's time to change the title of this thread to, "Real Jobs Will Be Dead Soon." At least that's the way it seems these days. And I don't see it getting better any time soon.

  • Anything can happen from what you believe.
  • It's a hard question. I have heard "they" are working on the next new "thing". (Mankind usually replaces/reinvents techonology that is over x years.)

I have no idea to what the next "thing" will be, but I'm certain that internet marketers with the right attitude will adapt in no time, as well as the early birds will probably find many smart ways to profit.

I personally don't know what to think about that theory. Technology changes every day, the principles of marketing remains the same.
  • people will always come up with there own opinion in life , but you don't have to react in every thing that you hear
  • Internet marketing is dead - long live Inbound marketing!
  • Internet-

A series of tubes, that distribute information.

    Marketing-

The process of changing or shaping a persons opinions, in order to facilitate the purchase of goods or services.

Those tubes look to be allright... Marketing's been around since the dawn of time...

    I'd say we'll be fine.

More appropriate I think, is the statement that "Rebills" are dead. (Which they arent, entirely, but I mostly welcome that reality.)

The days of squidoo, backlink spam, email spam, blog spam, and Adwords might be over - but so what.

That doesn't mean all that much to me, theirs always new avenues of distribution; With 3.4 billion people online and nobody owning the majority of that inventory yet (Google clocks in with a record breaking 3% of internet traffic.) I'm not to worried.

Relax people. Get back to work. Go make some money.
