Establishing Affiliate Marketing For Client

by Peter Khanna 32 replies
Group,

I have a client that I want to work with. They currently do not have an affiliate program for their product on Amazon. How could I create an affiliate program, or joint venture to begin promoting their product for them.

My goal is to sign up a bunch of other affiliates under me and start marketing. But obviously if I'm revruiting others as well I would want to earn a commission off of their deal.

This is a product that I believe in a lot. I do not know the other party that well but they seem to very out. I just do not want to get screwed and I would like to begin sooner than later. Any ideas from you out there with more experience would be helpful.

If I can get this contract - I will definitely offer a role to those that help.

A product on Amazon has the potential of tens of thousands of Amazon affiliates....

I do not know the other party that well but they seem to very out.
    Makes no sense.

      Kay,

I don't understand, is this something that they enable on their settings or something?

You are not aware of the Amazon Affiliate program? Don't mean to be rude but have no idea where you are coming from.

Do you have experience with online affiliate sales through clickbank, JVZoo or similar platform?

Perhaps there are other forms of promotion the seller would hire you to do.

No I am not. I've been in Pharmaceutical marketing for a while and I'm only now starting to get into internet marketing.

But I've found this guy that is new to market with a great product.

If their product is on Amazon, then you should be promoting it from Amazon's affiliate program.

To me, it sounds like you are trying to start an MLM with someone else's product. To do that, why not create your own product and mark it up 500% so you can afford to pay those below you?

      Seemore,

Basically you are correct. I would love to create an affiliate marketing MLM for them. Don't you think that's smart? They don't have the time to do it themselves and I would love to create it. What's so bad about that?
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11290257].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Seemore25101
Not bad per se. I'm a little jaded as I believe the MLM industry to be a great concept that works for the few, but not the many. Those are only my personal thoughts.

If that's what you would like to do, then you should either develop and sell your own - or create a joint venture with the owner in which you would sel their product through an mlm.

Some sort of joint venture would be great. I would love for everyone to be able to go market this product. I'm willing to spread the word, I just need to be able to profit in some regard. It's an easy sell right now and the guy is too busy to do it. It's a win-win if I can get the right agreement and help since I'm not an online marketer.

The only 'bad' part is you have no idea what you are doing.

You are trying to find a way to profit from someone else's product by finding a third person to set it up. Not a good plan.

If you truly believe in this product you would do better perhaps to build a site and run a promotional campaign to SELL this product as an Amazon affiliate yourself.

      It's called a sales manager.

Maybe the way we're discussing it is throwing you off, but in essence that's what I'm trying to do. Me finding people to sell someone else's product is a great thing. Atleast they believe so.

It is and it isn't a good thing. It's just as easy, if not easier long-term, to just put together quality content promoting this product.

There are so many things to promote out there. Is you want to do sales, then I would suggest becoming an independent sales person for them who is allowed to hire/find others below you. It sounds simple until you begin to put it into action.

You're trying to create an affiliate program for a "client" you don't even have, you're brand new to Internet marketing with no knowledge or experience, and you're asking random people (mostly newbies) on a public forum how they would set up the structure so you get paid for managing this system?

    OK then.

Why don't you just become an Amazon affiliate, sell the heck out of the product, and prove your worth. Then think about making a proposal once you've shown you know how to market.

I want to create an affiliate program for the product. Does not have to be confined to Amazon.

True, I'm new to most aspects of online marketing, although I've had several of my own niche sites in the past that have made about 50k annually - mostly thru email marketing and top SEO, so I still know how to market.

What I am going to do is keep finding a way to increase sales.

You could arrange exclusive rights to sell online, or in a specific region. If they begin selling on Amazon themselves then anyone could join the affiliate program of Amazon Associates.

If they don't have an internet presence then perhaps you could try to handle that aspect, and hopefully establish a strong foothold. There are downsides to using Amazon. For example, if they decide to sell their product to resellers then they could begin to lose control over the pricing of their product, especially if distributors get in the middle. I watched it happen when I was a reseller with near exclusive online presence. Once the floodgates opened the retail price dropped like a rock. It went from great margins to virtually nothing in a very short period.

Whatever you do, get it in writing. Convince them that you are their guy.

Everyone else seems to think I was wrong for trying to make money with this guy and his product. I guess they've never wanted something bad enough.

You are new to IM - but then you aren't. You've decided who the 'pros' are based on what - who agrees with you?

You think anything is possible if you WANT it bad enough - and you've dissed some of the working marketers who tried to answer.

Time for the "you can do it" posts, I guess.

I was looking solutions, not encouragement, but thanks.

I just spoke to my soon to be partner and we're working out the details. Hopefully it goes thru. If so, I look forward to working with ALL of you. When it comes to business sales are all I care about.

Also, I was able to sign up as an affiliate on Amazon and the product is listed so I will get a commission from what I can sell there. I think I will be building the website for the product since he said he doesn't know how. I guess it's fitting - two guys that don't know what they're doing but have a great product. I will take it..

    Hi Peter,

You may like to read Jay Abraham's ideas on setting up joint ventures.

You can read his material here:
    http://grumomedia.com/files/Jay_Abra...o_Millions.pdf

As far as setting up an affiliate program the "client" obviously has an idea that Amazon has a huge affiliate network with many benefits to both the affiliates and the seller.

If you get agreements in place with the "client" you can always set up a seperate sales system and affiliate program outside of amazon but you would have to make it more rewarding for affiliates and the "client" and that is where you would need to do some work.

You could approach the client to buy product at wholesale and then prove you can move volume of it through your own system. The proof is in the pudding so to speak.

There are many affiliate tracking systems but if you want to use something that is an integrated funnel, sales system and affiliate management then you could look at some of the solutions out there like Clickfunnels or Kartra or a host of other solutions.

I guess the advantage of creating a funnel outside of amazon would be to create sequences of upsells or subscription based supply so there is more than one sale to the customer and more than one commission payment to affiliates.

You can look at things like dollarshave, dollar beard club, zuma juice or the way fiberfix tape is promoted to get ideas about how to build out a sales funnel that maximises returns for the "client" and the affiliates.

It would also pay to go back and read some of the material posted by some of the long term members on your thread. Not just what they have posted here but what they have posted over the years because a lot of the answers you might be seeking will be in content they have contributed towards other people seeking help in this forum.

When you insult people who do provide valuable content you not only insult them but others who they have helped. You also don't come off as professional when you add insults to your replies.

Professionals usually respect the comments of others and try to help others with qualified advice.

Please read and learn more about what you can do to be successful as there is a whole lot of value you can derive when you take your time to get to know people inside this forum.

    Best regards,

    Ozi

What I'm reading here is that the OP wants to use the common offline model of Product Owner > Sales Manager > Salespeople model, with himself in the role of Sales Manager, collecting overrides on what his 'affiliates' sell.

Since he's written that he's already in negotiations with the product owner, I'll just say this...

I hope you are prepared to work for what you get. Your 'affiliates' will look to you for support, motivation and training. If you're looking for some kind of passive income fantasy where the affiliates do all of the work and you skim a percentage off the top simply for existing, I'd recommend several cups of strong coffee.

    Oh, and good luck...

This is what you are looking for. There are services like ShareASale that will help a company to setup and manage an affiliate program to promote a product.

However, I do not think any of them facilitate setting up a pyramid structure like you wanted to do. To set up something like that, you would need some solid programmers to get it running with proper tracking. Probably cost at least a few thousand dollars to have it all coded properly. You would also need a programmer on retainer for ongoing support.

On top of that, you would need to hire a lawyer to make sure all the proper legal disclosures are created for signing up affiliates.

Lastly, you are going to have to know how to monitor the entire apparatus to prevent affiliate abuse. If not monitored properly, the company could end up paying out thousands of dollars in fraudulent affiliate commissions.

If you are deadset on doing this, it's probably best to just setup something through ShareASale and come to an agreement with the company that you are going to run that side of things in exchange for a percentage of affiliate sales that come through.

How much does their product sell for and what would the commission be on a sale?

Can you get a higher commission on high volume?

Optionally, what is the product out of curiosity?

You could set up a CPA network on a small scale for around $300 per month using one of the top platforms. The product owner would be an advertiser and would pay X per sale. You sign up publishers (affiliates) to promote the product and pay them Y per sale and you keep the difference.

There are cheaper ways to do it, typically by using some inexpensive PHP script that if you want to be able to do on a professional level and scale, they aren't worth messing around with.

I've been promoting affiliate / CPA offers for over 17 years. Personally, I'm not real big on products / straight sales offers. More than not they just don't offer a high enough commission for me to bother with. Which is why I asked the question I did. Many times people let their passion get in the way of real profits.

A much better idea would be to buy traffic and send it directly to his product page on Amazon.

Running an affiliate program would most likely cost more per conversion.
