Help with Filezilla FTP login/connection please...

I've just tried loggin into filezilla, using...

Host: www.mydomain.com User: myusername P/W: mypassword
(all copied/pasted)

and get the following error:

Status: Resolving address of www.mydomain.com
Status: Connecting to xx.xx.xx.xx:...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [TLS] ----------
Response: 220-You are user number 1 of 50 allowed.
Response: 220-Local time is now 13:40. Server port: 21.
Response: 220 You will be disconnected after 15 minutes of inactivity.
Command: USER xxxxxxxx
Response: 331 User mydomain OK. Password required
Command: PASS ************
Response: 530 Login authentication failed
Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server

To risk stating the obvious "mydomain" is for example only

Any clues please?

thanks

The "host/hostname" NEVER starts with www in a FTP client. Try to remove it!
    It should be example.com only.

If auth failed - are you sure you are using the same user/pw combo as for the site admin (cpanel or whatever you have)?

Also, is this a newly registered doamin?

    Hi Ian,
I never use the www but not sure if that'll make a difference. That said ... I have only received that error when the username or password is wrong.

Have you had success logging in using Filezilla before or is this the first attempt?

First(ish) attempt, I seem to remember I tried 2 or 3 years ago with similar result...

    Put the hostname as:

    ftp.example.org

Since that'll hopefully then connect to the FTP protocol (i.e. ftp://ftp.example.org)

To be honest though, I personally think you've simply got the password wrong (going on the error message)?

Either that or IF you tried 5-10 times to login (and it didn't work), you've probably been temporarily blocked by your host.

      Status: Waiting to retry...
      Status: Resolving address of ftp.example.org
Status: Connection attempt failed with "EAI_NONAME - Neither nodename nor servname provided, or not known".
Error: Could not connect to serve

      Hmm
PW and Host corrected/adjusted; result as above. May have a temp block? (for how long?)

        Do you have snagit?

PM me a link to the snagit of your site entry.

Otherwise this is just too painful.

Or, you could look up what this error means (it seems obvious to me, but maybe not to you

"Neither nodename nor servname provided, or not known".

You probably mistyped your domain name.

        So, try this:

let's say your domain is mydomainis.com

Grab the url directly from the address bar in your browser where you've shown it to go to your site.

copy and paste the bolded part http://www.mydomainis.com
into the "host" field in the site dialog.

Who's your host out of interest? (PM me if you'd prefer not to post it here)

Perhaps the "ftp.example.org" format isn't right. It depends on the host's OS and control panel software.

If it is a temporary block it may be an hour, although thinking about it, if it was a temporary block you wouldn't be able to connect at all (in this case you're connecting, but then getting a "Wrong password" error message)

incidentally, it pays to read error messages VERY CAREFULLY. It can save you hours of frustration and heartache. (this assumes, of course, you are already reading the error messages to begin with.)

Nowhere did it say his password was wrong.

It simply say "password required" -- and, after he gave it, then he got the authenication failure message.

A simply-performed test in filezilla (which I did, moments ago, btw) -- shows whether the login authentication failure message was specifically due to a wrong password, or to a wrong username. (All I did was "copy" a working site entry -- and change the password. Tried connecting. Observed error message. Then I tried it with a wrong username. Tried connecting. Got the same error message. So the error message is not specific to an incorrect password.)

Actually, it doesn't matter about the login credentials at this point. The OP seems to have overcome that issue.

The main issue was that I was using incorrect User ID; just mysite instead of mysite@mysite.com

      thanks all

    Hi Ian,

I recently managed to setup filezilla for the 1st time and had similar problems to you.

from memory, the way i over came the problem was to login to h'gator cpanel (I'm guessing you are using h'gator from another thread of yours) scroll down to the "Files" section and go into "FTP Accounts"

Once there, scroll down the page a bit until you see your website listed (you may have more than one) and click on "configure Ftp acct" - from here you can get your ftp settings. Then go back one and click on change password. Change your password to the one you want.

Put this information into the setup screen on filezilla.

    Your host will be ftp.yoursite.com
    Don't worry about the port.
The user will be as taken from details in hgator cp
The password will be wahtever you changed it to.

Hopefully this will be enough to make the connection.

    Good luck.
