Want to be affiliate for companies without affiliate program - pitch ideas?

In my niche, I'm contacting some companies that I've bought from and like, and trying to see if they'd be willing to set up an affiliate program so I can work with them as an affiliate.

This is a tough one because to the uninitiated business owner or employee, the affiliate program question/idea sounds like a scammy / spammy thing. They just don't understand what it is or why they'd want it...I could try to explain but not sure the best way, or if they'll even get that far. I have a feeling a lot of my inquiries are going into the trash right away.

My question is, do you have any advice and ideas for a good way to pitch the idea? To contact a company out of the blue and ask them if they have an AP and if not, would they want to set one up.. ?

Thanks

    Tips:

    1) Stop selling to door knobs

    2) Start selling to a starving crowd

    3) Apply for a job with these companies

This might sound cliche but think about how many times J.K. Rowling was turned down before Harry Potter turned into what it is today.

Think about how many times Walt Disney failed...

If you love these companies, their product, and you truly feel that an affiliate program will help them, don't let failure hold you back.

You could always write up a pitch introducing yourself, explain any type of struggle you've had and how their products and services have helped you personally, explain the benefits of an affiliate program (not just for the affiliate but for that specific companies offers).

    I realize that's a little broad but it's a start.

Are there no existing affiliate opportunities in your niche?

"Setting up an affiliate program" sounds like a lot of work.

Maybe you just need to position what you are asking differently.

Ask them how you can become an independent sales rep for them, and simply earn a commission for every item you sell.

    Most businesses understand this concept.

If they're physical goods, you may also ask about if they'll drop ship or if they have discounts if you buy in bulk.

Uh, use the term 'sales rep.' it will at least give them something they can relate to while you paint a more detailed picture.

    Thanks everyone.

I really like the idea of painting a picture from the viewpoint of having more sales and paying commissions for it, as opposed to using scary terms like 'affiliate program'. Excellent advice.

    Great news:

One of the companies I contacted is owned by someone I have known a bit on FB for a while and he just set up an affiliate program specifically because I asked about it! I'll be the guinea pig!

Another company didn't respond, but I decided to follow up with a second email. Shortly after, they replied and said they do have a program already and linked me to the signup page

2 wins feels pretty good. Those 2 programs plus Amazon should be a good start for this noob

    Some of them are hidden.

Personally, I call up - ask to speak to the Marketing Director - explain what you are doing for others and see if they already have a direct one. If not there is a great wp plugin that can handle everything that works really well.
