Namecheap Hacked

Hi all,
My sites went down last night (Friday, US central time) and so I thought "oh it'll be back up in 15 minutes or so. Didn't happen. Kept checking back and finally sent a ticket to my host NameCheap and found out the shared server I was on gotten "defaced" last night.

Apparently all of the index files got corrupted. So now I have to go through and fix all of that because they don't have any current backups. It's no big deal to do that, they are all WP and apparently the databases weren't corrupted, it's just that I'm ready to shoot a few hackers for wasting my time.

In the end this is just a friendly reminder to backup backup backup.

You never know when it will happen to you.

    Thanks for reminding mate, I am using Namecheap too. I haven't experienced something like that before, but that doesn't mean that I won't. On the way to backup my sites now.

    Sorry to hear that. Be warned though that this might not have anything to do with Namecheap but rather your own security on your PC, your FTP client and the security of your WP installations.

    Familiarise yourself with this thread for more info.

    I hope the problem doesn't return because, if it's what I suspect it is, it has a nasty habit of appearing to have gone, only to return in a few days.

    Dang! You mean your domain name registrar turns out to not be so hot when it comes to web hosting?

    I mean, what do you expect for $3 a month hosting from a mesely "side business" they run for the "convenience" of their customers? Personally speaking, I'd EXPECT a $3/mo hosting server to get hacked now and then!

    (I got a dedicated server once and installed some free hosting software in the hopes that some of the folks would "upgrade" to a better PAID plan. That server was hacked before I even opened for business! You get what you pay for.)

    TIP: register your domain names with Namecheap, and get your HOSTING from a REAL HOSTING OUTFIT!

    BTW, "Namecheap Hacked" is a totallly INACCURATE statement.

    Namecheap's PRIMARY business is domain name registrations, and I've never experienced a single problem in the 2+ years I've been using them. I wouldn't touch their hosting with a 10' pole except maybe for unimportant hosting needs, like a photo-sharing script or something what I wouldn't be concerned if it got compromised.

      Slatron - you have my sympathy. Similar thing happened to me a few months ago. Once I worked out I just needed to replace the index.php files it was a few minutes work with ftp software to get them all up and running again.
