HELP - Can Someone Tell Me How To REALLY Make A LIVING Online?

OK, here is where I am currently at, and where I really want to get to.

Before the internet came along I was dabbling in traditional mail order, and I had a little success with selling a few things, both physical products and to a lesser extent informational products.

The arrival and acceptance of the internet interrupted me somewhat, because I could see that this could be a better way to do business, to save on postal costs in getting the message to people.

However I got myself bogged down in the technicalities in setting up online stores and shopping carts and setting up credit card / merchant accounts etc in order to take payments online., that was before I had ever heard about Paypal and Clickbank.

Anyway, I got distracted by having children and getting promoted in my full time job, and so the idea of starting my own online business took a back seat.

However the idea of being my own boss has never gone away, and I have been trying to make some part-time money online for a while now. I still have myfull time job and that restricts the amount of time that have available.

However I do accept that I have some time management issues to address which may help with this, such as unsubscribing from the majority of email 'news'letters that I currently receive.

Most of these 'news'letters are simply sales pitches for third party products, and not even thinly disguised at that, repeating word for word what the product launcher has told them to say.

I am also a bit of a perfectionist, and this is a big hinderence in being able to get products out there in quick time, although I still don't really see this as a disadvantage as I'd rather spend time in producing quality work.

I have dabbled (there's that word again!) at many different things, Adsense, affiliate marketing, CPA. I have tried RSS feeds, bookmarks, backlinks, Blogger blogs, Squidoo lenses, article writing and pay per click. I have made a few HTML sites and Wordpress blogs.

I have tried some of the latest tools available BUT not for any length of time, so I don't really think I've given them a fair chance to be honest.

I try something for a short while, then loose interest when the money doesnt roll in quickly. I'm not sure if that is my fault because by nature I am fairly impatient, or if I have been misled by the product or service sellers to expect results easier or quicker than actually is the case.

I then abandon that idea and jump on the 'next great thing, that presents itself in my inbox. Yes I really am that guillable

I've even purchased products and joined membership sites that I haven't even made use of, because I got distracted by the next shiny thing before I had even took the last one out of the box!

I know this is the wrong approach. I know I need to find something that works and stick at it. The problem is that so many people are telling me that their idea works that I don't know now who to believe.

Now it may be that all of their ideas work and the fault is with me, and I can accept that this may well be true.

STOP ! STOP ! STOP !

But now I want to get away from the latest 'great things' and fancy tools and gimmicks and really get back to basics.

I want to start a 'proper' online business.

I want to get back to identifying a market and providing what they want.

I'm still not sure how to do this yet, ie build a list, SEO, PPC, article marketing, Adsense, but all I know is that I want to move away from the latest gimmicks and fads and get back to basics and build a REAL business.

Can anyone please throw me a lifeline and point me in the right direction, to the right tools, or to the right person to follow?

    Hi Stephen,

    You really need to find one program that walks you through the entire process and follow it through.

    You have to give it time though because you will not get instant gratification with whatever method you ultimately choose.

    There is a free program called The 30 Day Challenge.

    I've heard that it very good but it may be too basic for you.

    Someone will probably be able to give you a link or just do a search on here - it has been discussed before.

    I wish you every success - just don't give up.

      No, that's the first time I've heard that one today , actually I don't mind being compared to THAT Steve Davies, he was a good player in his day and an excellent role model, we need more like him.

      I actually signed up to the 30 day challenge, however when it started up I was half-way through something else, and so although I received the emails with the links to the lessons I never got involved with it.

        Hi Stephen,

        I have been where you are...moving on from one scheme to the next.

        There are lots of opportunities, no doubt there is one particular area that you enjoy more than others.

        I did follow your sig. and notice you offer a range of internet marketing ebooks.

        You could try narrowing this broad range to something more specific, e.g.
        "How To Use Wordpress", "How to Get The Most from Twiiter".

        Set up your own blog around that subject, which will be the hub of your online business, provide content on your blog and link from there to the targeted products.

        Hope that makes some sense.

      Seriously though, the first thing you need is clarity and focus, I think you're right to unsubscribe from some newsletters as they will only serve to distract you with the latest pitch which often can lead you down the garden path with little to show for it, I myself have been guilty of that.

      Pick just one thing and run with it and block everything else out. That way you're more likely to see something through to completion.

      Work at something that exploits your strengths and if you don't have the skills necessary such as in content creation, niche research, etc then find someone who does.

      Find where the money is, look outside of IM, promote as much as you can, measure the results and rinse and repeat.

      And be consistent and set aside time specifically for building your business and you'll find your wheels will finally get some traction rather than spinning in the mud of overwhelm we so often find ourselves in.

      You ultimately have to decide for yourself which advertising medium you choose, it might just be a matter of what's more within your comfort level both skill and budget wise that's the determining factor but whatever you decide to go with ie PPC, article marketing, forum marketing, viral marketing, link building, take it as far as you can until you see results.

      If you find that after a month or two of constant persistent effort that it's not working, then change but at least you'll know that maybe that particular avenue isn't for you and fast tracks you on the road to something that eventually will be. You only find out through doing.

      If you live by the philosophy to always finish what you start then you'll find that you'll be 1,000% more productive than you currently are.

        Probably not. You admit in your OP that you have a problem following anything long enough to get results.

        So.. no matter what I might suggest, I'd be wasting bandwidth and time.

        Try this:

        Go read the Anthony Robbins book Awaken The Giant Within

        Read it Twice, and then do the tasks he leaves for you in there...

        Then PM me or contact me for some help. I'm always willing to give time to someone who is ready to take action, but you aren't.

        Also, your questionable choice of signature before makes me wary of your ethics, but I'm sure we can overcome that.

          I would really take Jays advice and his generous offer of help. Although I dont know him personally, he often makes valuable posts on the WF and is someone who a lot of people hold in high regard.

          He also seems to know what he is talking about and he has just offered you some wise hints. We are all guilty of trying the next shiny thing online but NOTHING works until you give it the right time, attention and follow through. I should know I have tried most of the shiny things myself

          BUT the most important thing to get right in your road to success on any level is your mindset. You seem to be able to identify what your issues are so best get those addressed before you proceed.

          If you cant handle Tony Robbins (I love reading but found the "giant within" quite painful to get through) there is an excellent book by Robin Seiger - a UK personal development guy who beat cancer and changed his life around - called Natural Born Winners. This also has some valuable tips on how to cure our issues.

            Hmmmm..

            The Thirty Day Challenge is still available, and may be exactly what you need. It gives you a step by step process to follow for 30 days to get your business going. If you would actually follow it for 30 days, and get in the habit of doing steps every day for 30 days, you might develop the habit of working on your online business consistently and with a plan.

            The process they teach can be repeated over and over, and easily expanded upon to create a good business.

            The other big piece of advice, make a decision to choose one guru, follow them religiously for a year, ignoring all the other noise, and doing the work. (You can find a guru here, or pick one of your favorite big names.)

            It doesn't matter so much which guru, it's a matter of following one plan religiously until you are having results, and when you get stuck on one item, seek only advice on that one item instead of the entire spectrum of internet marketings. Example: If your conversions suck, then find information from your guru on copywriting, or who they advise to learn copywriting from.

            You have the same problem most of us run into, sticking with a plan until it succeeds. Those shiny new toys are so much fun....

            Making some money online is easy, but making a living online is
            a question of your ability to make an irrevocable decision to do
            that and nothing else. It's a profession like any other.

            For example, you can make a living online if you dedicate 8 hours
            a day to writing articles and promoting CB products of your choice.
            But then you have to become really good at it and you need to do it
            consistently for at least one year. Every day, 8 hours.

            That was just an example. Whatever you decide to specialize in
            the principle above applies.

              I understand your pain.

              Honestly, there are so many different ways to make money online it can make your head spin - and it has.


              Your best bet I think is to decide a niche first and stick to it. Because you're not talking about making money here. Heck, I tossed up a campaign quickly last week and made a sale within 24 hours on a virtually unheard of product. That is the easy part.

              Maintaining regular income is a completely different ball of wax - and I'll be the first to admit to you this is something I struggle with as well.

              I have found a ton of different ways to make money that work. But much like you I have been inconsistent.

              I chalk up a lot of where I've been and what I've seen into experience I can use to propel myself into a sustainable business.

              In the past 2 months now there has been a huge amount of self analysis going on.

              I know I want to do this. I know I can make money. None of that is the issue.

              But I have to establish myself some how and something particular needs to be associated with me and who I am.

              You go to Mc Donalds, because you know they have burgers and you know what they are about. You go to Home Depot because they will have a hammer when you need it.

              If I had a real desire to learn about Squidoo for example, I would go to Tiffany Dow here on this forum. I know she is extremely well versed on the subject - although she does have other offerings.

              It really is as "easy" as finding that one corner to dig yourself into and just keep on it until everyone knows you are the go to guy for that particular thing.

              You tell me what that is and I can give you probably 101 plans to monetize on that one idea. I can show you exactly where you need to go to find what you will need to implement it. I can even offer up experience and advice to why I think one thing is a better direction to go than the other.

              I feel like a genie who can do everything but grant herself a wish.

              Pick something and do it to the exclusion of all else.

              I know how true this answer really is.

                And I guess this is the problem, and it ties in with the Andrew Hanson blog comment mentioned in one of the posts above.

                For those who did not read it the post refers to an experiment that was carried out that monitored the behaviour of people who had a choice of business paths to choose from, and after picking one and began to make a little money they dumped it in favour of another, because they doubted that they had made the correct initial choice.

                I know that I need to pick a system and stick with it, but I'm scared that I'll pick the wrong one, and regret it further down the line.

                I guess I need some reassurance that I will be able to make money at it, and that my efforts won't be a complete waste of time.

                I'll give you an example: I read a Warrior Forum post regarding making money by using a certain method. Now I'm really interested in this particular method and so this appealed to me, and I purchased the information.

                Some people in this forum said that they were trying out the method and starting to make money at it, and I thought great. I read the information again intending to start it myself.

                In the meantime I came across a few posters that seemed to be struggling to make money with it, admittedly in the short term. And then the negative thoughts started in my head. What if 3 or 6 months into this method I too would be struggling to make money?

                Well guess what, I never did anything with it

                It's not that I'm afraid of hard work, a few years ago at 50 years of age I completed a distance learning BSc University course, which involved me working over 30 hours per week at home on top of the 47 hours per week at my day job.

                The difference there was that I was 100% confident that if I worked hard for 3 years I would achieve my reward, with IM the results aren't that certain.

                Now don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for guarantees, I understand that a certain amount of uncertainty goes with the territory of working for ones self. I can take that.

                But I suppose what I am looking for is genuine advice that I am reasonably confident that I can trust. And the problem is that having been burned before I am sometimes cynical at some of the claims that are being bounded about.

                And now I've got to the point where I find it difficult to sort out the good guys from the bad guys.

                That is why I find the Warrior Forum so useful.

            I had a tendency to jump from thing to thing, and this post at Andrew Hansen's blog really was eye opening to me. I mean, I knew I was shooting myself in the foot, but that made it so obvious.

            So I quit doing that and have made a lot more money ever since. Any proven method of IM works, all you have to do is stick to it.

            I completely "get" what you are saying. This is what I did.

            • Clicked unsubscribe on all newsletter2 except 2.
            • Improved my own info product (Not IM) so it was worth the money to buyers. (The first 50 customers got a rubbish product for which I am ashamed and sorry).
            • Started a blog that sent people to the product page.
            • Wrote obsessively on that blog. All the time.
            • I improved my sales process following advice from warriors and others.
            • Attended a lunch in London for internet marketers. Astounding!
            • Did almost nothing else online for 3 months except blog and improve.
            • Ignored the WSO section by not going there. (It's Brilliant for me but was not what I needed.)
            • Started to see results.

            Then I allowed myself some width with some other projects.

            Whatever you do - buy nothing else.
            Pick something and do it to the exclusion of all else.

            PM me for help if you like and I will help you choose. For ongoing help Jay and others will probably be better. I just do simple things

            I've bolded what I see as the relevant issues in your quote, and here's the dealio:

            If these things ONLY happen in your IM efforts, then I'm not sure what to call it. You probably just need to improve your focus and discipline your actions better ala the post from Kenj.

            But...If you can point to any of these issues in your life In General, then You've just described CLASSIC OCD/ADHD.

            Before you read Tony Robbin's book, get yourself evaluated. And medicated if that's what they recommend!

            Now, I am NO therapist, but I AM an educated amateur...

            I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AND SYMPTOMS WHEN I STARTED IM.
            (And they affected every facet of my life!)

            But not anymore...

            There's NO shame in asking for help...but you gotta help YOURSELF first.

            Then- take Jay and Darren up on their offers...because they're BOTH the Real Deal. Hell, I'll help you too! But take action to help yourself First.

          But you must have your bonus offer to started this system, you can't compete in IM niche without offer a bonuses to someone for purchasing through your affiliate link,

          Set up your review pages ( wordpress platform for sure ) and dominate for the product keyword in google through SEO

    Find a popular profitable niche you're interested in, provide value, build a list, provide value, promote other peoples products.

    Add up ALL the time you've spent jumping from project to project, then imagine if you'd spent all that time building a list.

    I'm guessing it would be pretty big by now.

    Stop chasing money. Let money chase you.

    Stephen, I've felt the same way. I'll humbly add something that has given me a bit of clarity.

    When I get excited about the latest thing, I'll ask myself if I really want to do all that it entails to make it a success. Surprisingly or not so surprisingly the answer is often no. I take into account my skills, how much I really want to make and the effort required. If they all match up, then go for it and have tunnel vision. I think you'll find that a lot of the programs you bought, you weren't ready for, or that kind of thing deep inside doesn't appeal to you.

    As for what you should do...everyone's different and that's the point. What works for one person that makes them tremendously successful might be a bore to you. Find something that you can really have sustained excitement about...and that will see you through the challenges. Otherwise, you'll be on the next shiny object as soon as a little adversity hits. I've been there.

    One more thing...

    Before purchasing the next shiny thing ask yourself:

    Do I absolutely need this?
    Will I use it?
    What's my past experience with impulse buys?
    What have I done with the past 3 info products I purchased and can I name at least 5 different ways I implemented the knowledge I learned from them?
    Does it tie in with what I'm currently working on?, for example if all of your efforts are centering around say product creation for example, do you really need that report on how to make money doing CPA?

    If you stick to these points it should help to keep you focused and on your way to seeing some real results.

    You say you have a full time job - but you don't say what you do. Could you set up a site based around that - ie an area that you have a lot of knowledge in. I have a friend who runs a successful membership site. She also teaches and runs clubs - all on the same subject.

    In other words - don't try and follow the herd. Take time to build up a site on a topic you really know about. In time people will start to find your site and use it.

    There are thousands of things to do on internet. I am in the same situation as you are. but you can surely check out some of the latest trends if you think you are left behind. 30 Day challenge is a great programme, you can check that out.
    Or I am planning to open my collection of programmes for people, you can check that too.

    the _only_ way to start a "proper" business online (or offline) is to provide lots of in-use value through leverage.

    In-use value meaning value people get from your service or product. More in-use value they get, more they will be willing to pay for it.

    And how to know if you're doing something of value?

    Simple - would you buy whatever you're selling?

    I too had followed new things and jumped from train to train as they were coming. Until I've read Allen's books. That changed my views on IM.

    One last thing. Stop reading and spending and start doing.

    I agree with Jay regarding his post about giving up! I haven't read the book he mentioned and I think I will now. Luckily, I do get stuff done and stick to it which is why I am probably making ok money online now!

    What I would say though as far as advice is:
    Find a route you are interested in, no point promoting a product as an affiliate if you are not into it, thats when it gets easy to give up. So, find a route to make money online that your excited about, this is a good start.

    Then, give yourself 3 months!!!!!!!! Say to yourself that you will dedicate 3 months to the project because you will then if you worked hard, will have made money and seen results. You will probably see results a lot sooner, first month in most cases if you work hard and smart.

    But telling yourself to give it 3 months is the best thing. At least then, you can grab more enthusiasm from the results to build and build!!!

    Ok, and thirdly outsource!!!

    It doesn't cost the earth to outsource and I am not talking outsourcing loads. Just outsource the stuff you get bogged down with and do it from the start, this way you won't pull your hair out trying to get a payment processor working or a website designed etc.!!!

    To move forward, here's what to do:

    1. Unsub from everything else. EVERYTHING.

    2. Don't buy anything - courses, ebooks, webinars, etc - yet.

    3. Sign up for Paul Myers' TalkBiz News, then get some of his stuff, particularly "Need To Know", "Simple Business" and "The Piggyback Report". In your case, you might want to start with "Need To Know".

    If I had to start over and knew nothing, I'd start with Pauls' writings and I'd do very well. The trick is to get into action and stick with it. He has a conversational writing style, making it easy reading, but if one were not careful, one would think that he was just, well, conversing, and all the while he would be pointing out actions to take.

    Start with that, and see where it would take you in one month, two months, three months, etc.

    Here's a quote from The Piggyback Report that I've always liked:

    The real concept you need to drill into the part of your mind that pays attention to business is this: You need to be aware of and looking for any situation in which you can use an existing market force to add momentum to your business efforts.

    When I first saw the OP I thought it was one of those "humorous" Warriors trying to give some "just take action" lessons. I thought it was pretty convincing actually. So I gave a "thanks" because it raised a smile. I thought it would catch some Warriors out and they'd wade in with equal numbers of raised and furrowed brows.

    I feel a bit thick now.



    Steve, this place is packed full of people that really honestly do what you aspire to. And they have been for years. I can't think of a better place for you to seek advice. But you have to do something about your own situation. Prove that you're not going to waste people's time and goodwill.

    Jay set a small task, for your benefit, as a test to learn whether or not you're prepared to take responsibility and action. I'd strongly advise you to take him up on his offer. He's a good guy and makes a good living. Which is pretty strange when you think about it, 'cos he's a manc.

    Hi Stephen,

    It is quite obvious from your original post and your subsequent post you are a good writer. And if you are the same Stephen Davies who provided me with some really good articles, writing is your strength. If I were you I think I would concentrate on that strength and hammer at it until you have a steady income coming in.

    That happens to be one of my strengths and once my mentor convinced me I was chasing the "the next best thing" and I needed to focus on developing an online writing business, instead of chasing "TNBT", my IM career began to put real money into my bank account. However, it didn't happen overnight, the 1st month was like $210, but every month after that my income increased very nicely.

    How did I manage to do that? I focused on my strength, developed an informal business plan (help me set my goals) and then continued to focus on developing my business. What is your business? You might ask. Memberships, plain and simple.

    The way I built the memberships was by giving them what they wanted and making darn sure they received top quality product and customer service from day one. As my 1st membership grew I started another one and guess who were the first members. You guessed it! The satisfied customers from my 1st membership.

    Then another membership, another 1, another 1 and I'm still building memberships.

    Focus, Focus, Focus is the key. You have a really solid skill and know how to express yourself. Stephen you can do it. I'm an "Old Geezer", some here would say I'm older than dirt , but once I focused on my strength my business has grown and grown.

    Jay, has offered to help you once you agree to become focused, get there first my friend and then go with him. BTW I suspect you may get some PM's from people wanting to "mentor", you make darn sure you check them out.

    I am looking to do the same thing as you - but in a much more accelerated way - perhaps I can help you through my quest over the next 24 days.

    I know this may sound a little crazy, hence why I've called it 'The Foolish Girl's Guide to Making Money Online' - basically over the next 24 days I am aiming to use the internet to make £60,000 to hit my sales target and avoid being fired by my boss. Along the way, I will be writing about all of the methods I use in my blog which is called 'A Foolish Girl's Guide To Making Money Online' and is on Blogger. I've bought a couple of licenses to products and courses, so by using these, I aim to make my target amount, and offer my success tips along the way - which is where you come in as I'm happy to share within this forum what works. In addition, I'm asking people to guess how much money I will make online in my next 24 days of trying to make £60,000 and not get fired. If you guess the amount I end up making by the time I finish on 3rd November, you'll get 10% of the total. Of course, 10% of nothing is still nothing, but 10% of £60,000 is £6,000, and I will undoubtedly make something, so you have nothing to lose by guessing, and you'll help me by motivating me along the way.     It's easy to get sidetracked when your trying to build an internet marketing business. I know for me the sheer amount of information out there can be overwhelming. So I would suggest that you find one system or program and stick to it, don't deviate and don't buy anything else until you see some good results. At that time I would only invest in tools that would help scale up or compliment what is already working.
