SMG Online Personal Training App Not Selling Does My Product Suck? Be Honest Please

So I have a great 'transformation' story / proof and all that. I became an NSCA certified personal trainer (CPT) and put together resistance training programs on an app that people could use for themselves.

I use the Trainerize SaaS platform and have customized it with my brand, including nutrition, workout vids, schedule, etc. I've run solo ads on Udimi (that was a joke), PPC on facebook and had awesome results / traffic / leads, but no conversions (I had one, but their credit card failed).

I've spent a year playing with this with little to show. Is my personal training app product just not good enough? Is my market niche too saturated? I've actually had good results by 'word-of-moth' but that kind of defeats the purpose in my case, lol.

I'm legally blind and have been working with my VR to develop a home-based business, but since IM is not delivering, I may have to finds ways and means to get out and about again to market. Anyways, have a look at it and be brutally honest with me. https://slavenmansgym.com

    Hi Jonathan,

Most software has a free trial period or an introductory price trial type offer.

Your sales page could be a lot better and I would work on that for a while before sacrificing the work you already did with adding content to the app.

You should think a bit about how you can become the guide not the hero.

Think about having a simple message.

    Basically.

A person with a problem meets a guide who gives them a plan and calls them to action that results in success.

There are so many things you can try.

Things like a survey type funnel where you get some micro commitments from a visitor and then offer them a 14 day free trial of the app for example.

You might want to try sending people to a live webinar where you demonstrate the outcomes and get people in the mindset to take a $1 trial.

I'd make sure you had a really compelling sales page and an outstanding offer to get people to start using the app because without those things it won't go anywhere.

Some of the weight loss apps that are out there are promotions products also so they can make them free knowing they will sell product on the back end but you can still use a free trial and see if that converts.

This is an example of one of the fat blaster ads that has run on TV in oz for a free weight loss app. Notice the messaging and the free offer. you can watch it on youtube here:

    Best regards,

    Ozi

    • Thanks, Ozi.

I had a 14-day free trial for a long while. The majority of the time I required payment info up front, and for a short while even did a free, no payment method required.

The free trial with credit card info didn't do so well, whereas the free trial w/o payment info got plenty of sign-ups, but people didn't even download the app lol.

I hear where you're coming from with the sales page: it sucks. Thank you for the suggestions. I'm going to take a wrecking ball to the site and redo it completely. I like your suggestion of 'be a guide, not a hero'. Maybe I could make the Nutrition part a free PDF download?

Ozi, if I sent you the training app download link (free of course) would you be willing to get in there and have a look?

Sorry, I'm just at a complete loss here after a year of making little progress. _Jonathan

I've taken a look at the app already on the trainerize site and that is not really where the issue is.

One off my clients for several years is in the surgical weight loss business and there are some insights I can share with you in regards to getting people to take action or more importantly finding an audience that is ready to take action.

Your website obviously targets a male audience.

From experience there are a few triggers that spur men onto getting fit and losing weight.

The young single brigade are pretty much image conscious and there are many who aspire to body build but they are not really your audience at least not with the images you portray on your site.

The overweight group that wants to lose weight can be broken down into segments that you could target through messaging and sales page design.

You can have different sales or landing pages for different segments and you should consider developing focused pages to go after segments that may be interested in your app.

I suspect that many of the ideal targets for you really want more than just an app to help them lose weight and build muscle.

I suspect many want emotional support.

        Many want psychological support.

Given you might be targeting overweight men you should consider the triggers that cause someone to go out and start losing weight.

From my experience working with the surgical side of weight loss I know the triggers tend to be around a few key areas.

A diagnosis of early onset of diabetes or some other co-morbid condition.

An inability to father children due to hormonal imbalance cause by excessive weight or liver issues.

Recent separation where partner has found a better specimen.

There are many other triggers that surround the circumstances for each overweight man.

With women there are some similarities but it is easier to present a case to women than it is to men and in the surgical field it was always far more skewed towards females making decisions to take radical steps to lose weight.

As for your situation I would test some different messaging and build some specific pages to target the key triggers you think your ideal prospects have.

You might like to test a higher ticket solution where you offer more support and counselling, coaching via Skype for example.

You could test whether people want more support.

From my experience we involved psychologists and dieticians to support prospects and clients both pre and post surgery.

The steps before someone makes the decision to lose weight via surgery is to try the different diets and weight loss options including exercise and other means.

Most of those solutions are temporary and leave out the "support" part which is kind of where the app sits.

You want to sell something that has recurring income but doesn't really have recurring effort on your part.

You might like to test whether people want the support side which is where the personal trainer comes in in the gym.

You need to be the mental support and maybe get numbers of people you can support as a group so you can minimise your input but still deliver better results for a person who needs help.

I'd try to get people to talk to you possibly via a live chat or helpline type scenario and see what their specific issues are.

I know it takes more work but you can always have a more expensive package and you can always downsell the app on it's own for people who think they don't need the full support.

What I'm suggesting is more work but if you are committed to helping people and using your qualifications it is something prospects may expect and may happily reward you for.

Don't underestimate the power of a social group. I guess that is how the group training environment works for personal trainers but you can use that social power in an online sense if you can hold some regular weekly, fortnightly, monthly interactions via either facebook live or any webinar platform or via some group forum.

I know there aren't the numbers there to do that right away but that is why you will need to put in some more personal effort and personal contact to the early adopters of your new program.

Once you have established some group of users they can help each other with some of the support required.

You might like to try some physical events where you invite people to come along and start their weight loss journey. this becomes easier as you go along because you will have supporters who have achieved some success and they often want to give back.

With my client they run monthly live events and also broadcast live. They usually get one male and one female who has had success to come and take to the group and have them answer questions. This drives conversions on the night but it does require effort to organise and run on a consistent basis.

Once you have built up a group it becomes easier to justify the expense and the time to maintain things.

Hope that gives you a little bit more to think about.

Don't think there is one easy solution because there really isn't.

It requires some solid work but if you test as you go I'm sure you will find some success amongst the failures.

It is not about the app. It is about the results the prospect wants to achieve and the journey you will support them on to get there.

        Best regards,

        Ozi

        • Thanks a lot for the good information. It is a lot to digest, and I'll spend some time doing just that. I'm currently studying to certify as an NSCA-CSCS (no longer going to be a CPT). I'm going to switch focus to hiring on as a strength and conditioning coach at the local university / colleges. I plan on growing the business back up with word-of-mouth marketing at local events (farmer's markets, etc.).

Some of what you suggest wouldn't be too hard, since I already support clients with in-app messaging. I could develop that more I suppose. You're also right in that it's a lot to do, but I have time to do it with once I finish certification in the next month.

You say you do such things with clients and do it successfully. Could you please share your business's website? What would your estimate be for a project such as mine? You obviously have the experience and knowledge, Ozi. What would it take for me to potentially become a client? Something else for me to consider.

Again, thank you for your help.

It is good that you understand the real growth comes through establishing relationships.

I think developers of the app made it to become a tool for personal trainers to use with their clients and it may have originally been developed for one business in particular and then they realised the potential leverage of selling the service to others.

My core business is not in fitness or weight loss but I have worked in that field because in 2012 my business received a digital marketing award from my local government and I ended up on a digital strategy commitee to help guide the local government for my city. That lead to me doing some public speaking and coaching etc and I was approached by several businesses to help them with their digital strategy development and implementation.

Consequently, I ended up working as a consultant to a few different diverse businesses and in the digital development space I've only taken on clients by word of mouth and only then when I felt I could make a difference for those businesses,

My company currently employs staff of 10 in my main retail/wholesale business and we have a multitude of online operations ranging from ecommerce, B2B services and education portals.

If you dig a little it is not hard to find out about me or my operations.

I won't post client links or my business links here because I'm not in the business of self promotion or exposing my clients to unwanted attention publicly but I'll send you some details for your own research purposes.

You have already demonstrated a level of commitment both in your own personal journey and in the development of a business to serve your clients for the longer term and I'm sure you will develop your business further.

Hopefully you will receive other advice or opinions about your situation which you can use to help you build on what you have already done.

            Talk soon.

            Best regards,

            Ozi

    • I've mentioned before that I had a 14-day free trial, both with and without payment info needed. People who signed up for the free trial didn't even bother to download the app and their free trial ended before they even tried it!
