Remember the "Thanks" button !!??

There's a little courtesy notifier built into this here Warrior Forum, a gentle, unobtrusive way of simply saying, 'Thanks, I liked that' or 'Cheers for that, it was useful' or 'made me laugh' or 'I agree.'

The humble wee "Thanks" button.

It's been around for a year or so and was met with almost unanimous approval. It may have been slightly overused at first but as the novelty wore off it soon settled down to an 'acceptable' level of usage.

However, I'm think I'm noticing a slight fall-off of usage. On browsing the threads it is sometimes more noticeable by it's absence.

This could be due to new members not realising it's there or older members forgetting about it (I suspect the former) or it could just be that I'm British and we tend to say 'thank you' and 'sorry' far too often. We apologise to street lights when we bump into them. Sorry! ;-)

So how about a little more judicious use of the little 'Thanks' button. It saves on pointless 'Thanks for the post' comments and is simply polite.

    On a more serious note, I try to use the thanks button as much as I can... even when I disagree with most of a post, if I find one little thing.. funny, interesting, helpful to me, helpful to others, crazy..

    Anything I can.. I will shoot a "thanks"

      I like this forum for the good information provided and also I will not hold myself to press the thank button if somebody in this forum make a helpful post..

  • But if I use the thanks button instead of leaving a comment, how will I quickly build up my post count on the forum?

    I mean if I don't post 20 small messages a day, I am never going to look clever or legitimate on this site and I desperately need to, because I am about to shoot a link into my sig telling the World if they click the button and hand over the money, for just $17 (or any other amount of money that works) they can have my system for making monies online that I have been using for years.

    This is the same system I have used to be rich, successful, good-looking and totally free. I just had some free time on my hands from all that "success" so thought I'd drop by this forum, make a couple hundred crap posts, leave a few semi-articles around, paint myself as a genius, and then drop the "sig-bomb" linking to a website that looks like a crack-addict or 8-year-old designed it.

    I don't need the money, I just love helping people.


    **IMPORTANT** The above post is totally ironic and does not reflect my views at all. If you failed to notice this it is a good guess you might not be the sharpest knife in the cutlery draw.

    • No, silly. You make it a habit to hit "Thanks" before you hit "Quote" because if you quote the original message your message looks bigger and more useful.

  • Yep , always good to say thanks. Even if it is just that one word reply. It's way better than when you can spend 20 minutes typing a long decent reply, and then the original poster doesn't even reply..I'm like, did you read the reply, or just couldn't be bothered to say one way or the other, very strange.

    Anyway, thanks for the 'thanks' reminder.

      I do wonder if it is a very British thing to say thank you or sorry for just about anything, I think it is.. for instance.. you said NOT to thank you for bringing this subject up and I tried not to, really I did, I read the whole thread but I just could not stop myself, just had to hit the thanks button before posting..

  • I guess it depends on how British some 'street light bumpers' are.

    I thought that in the North Midlands parts where you are, lamp posts would be physically abused if they were bumped into . . .

    Its also scary when they respond in the same way - I once ended up with 2 black eyes when one of these lamp posts 'got its own back' on me.

    • You have to be logged in to see the 'thanks' button. Then you will see it in the bottom right corner of each post with a few other buttons.

  • The "thanks I agree" one liner has built a many a post count .

    There is a lot of subjects I have no clue in. I use the thanks button a lot in these for the fact that I have learned something from the post but any opinion I give on these subjects would (IMO) just be an attempt to up a post count .

    Endless off topic ramblings and long dialogs explaining that I have no idea but if I did this is how I would do it ,run up post counts. For those that are only looking for instant recognition ... understand ... people do go back and look at your post .

    The thanks button is a great tool.... one that is used too little .

  • I just joined a few days ago, and I feel like I've helped out a few people, who have not used the Thanks button either. It is a pretty simple gesture and it just makes me feel bright and cheery inside when someone says thanks. It's kind of like the simple hand wave when someone let's you over in traffic. It's just a nice thing to do.

    I also want to say, that I love this forum, and I am glad I've found a place that has great topics to discuss with others. So I'm coming back through and thanking everyone who posted! Thanks.

    • Just another point worth noting:

      Adding your 'Thanks' alone to a post will not subscribe you to a thread. You would have to manually subscribe using the Thread Tools if you haven't contributed to the thread with your own post.

      Not true Mary!! Even before your comment I'd used the Thanks button 2 or 3 times (I've added more since) and, most importantly, I'd thanked in the body of post #19.

  • I have been wondering about the thanks button. I have yet to see it in any of the posts I have read. Even in your post all I see is the animated red arrow, but no thanks button. Could it be that because I am new here, the button is not available?
  • You know what I find interesting.
    The built in functionality to take away your "thanks".

    I've actually never done that in real life conversations.

    Could you imagine the look on someone's face if you asked them, "um excuse me ma'am, I'm gonna take back my thanks, I changed my mind."

  • Eric, I have thanked at least twice as a smart alec response to a lame post. I promptly removed my thanks on those occasions and was glad to have the ability to do so.

    Some of us are old warriors and have patterns hard to break from years of being thanks-button-deprived.

    I noticed you'd thanked some people after I hit the submit button so please accept my apologies. It was a vain attempt on my part to be humerous .

    I do like your joke though - My mother is exactly like that and I'm currently writing some articles on the subject. It's amazing how long those simple conversations take.
