Affiliate Marketing or Display Marketing ?

Hi Warriors,
In my company, I've been offered the opportunity to manage our affiliate programs or our Display marketing activities.
I'm interested in both channel but I'd like insight from expert on which has the most potential, in terms of future opportunities, development, as much as interestingness.
What would you do if you were me?
Thanks
Maxime

My guess is that you work in an Ad agency.

I will suggest that stay with Affiliate Marketing if your have potential publishers and also advertisers. The campaigns will make your company much more money than display. In return you will get the favors from your company.

But the real question reside here is that are your advertisers and publishers more tend to affiliate or display ads?

      Hi Paul,
Thanks for your answer, I'm actually on the client side. Our budget for affiliate and display are roughly similar.
I feel that managing affiliate program is more being a bond between the publishers and the affiliate platform, which seems to be very sales oriented to me. To ask publishers to promote us more than a competitor against an incentive in commission or else.
On the other hand Display sounds more like a day to day optimisation job, much more based on technology for the RTB side and strategy on media buying.

Well it totally depends on the product you are promoting.

But since affiliate campaigns are little but tougher don't give display ads the full vote.

The reason behind this is that always remember in case of affiliates your client only have to pay if he or she get any sales and otherwise not.

As they say it is horses for courses. Yes, some products do make sense if you sell them affiliate marketing. For other products, you need to show them to the customers. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the kind of market you need to cater so that you wisely invest in the right kind of online advertising solution.

Which do you know more about? Skill and desire wise, do you like marketing on the internet in general - or do you generally enjoy offline marketing more?

I ask because you might happen to choose the most profitable and successful route, but wind up hating working with it at your job. Could even cause you to get tired of it all and quit.

    Max,

This is one of those situations where you need to decide what course is best for you ... in spite of the opinions of others that are going to tell you what they would prefer. If I were in your shoes, I would consider
    • Personal career goals both in the short- and long-term;
    • Current talents, skills, and abilities to be effective in each discipline;
    • Activities and tasks that will be required in each path - or said another way - what will you be doing all day long and does that sound like something you can stay motivated with?
    • What is the future for each path and will it give you the stability and challenge that you need to keep at it?
    • Which path will give you the best experience and skills for the future if you decide to change employment?
    • Which path is most "in demand" by your clients (and is therefore a more valuable training for your personally going forward)
I think if you objectively weigh both options against these criteria (and any others that are important to you), the best alternative will surface.

Good luck in your career decision,

    Steve

    Hi Maxine,

I agree with what Steve B says.

Most importantly it's about what you want/enjoy more. I would add though, in my opinion, that affiliate marketing is going through a bit of a change at the moment with GDPR and companies using SaaS platform to bring the program in-house and do it correctly. But ultimately I would agree with Steve B.

    All the best,

Affiliate Marketing for sure. It's easier to grow than with display marketing. Which is quite important for your future.

It actually depends on the service/product you offer. Sometimes display marketing is more effective and profitable if you visually display some physical product. The services are usually promoted through affiliate programs. So, check the options and consider the pros and cons. In fact, you can combine both if your website has several categories or sections.

Its totally depends on the product or the service you offered to your customer. but I think display marketing is much easier than affiliate marketing. In display marketing, you just have to create ads and display it on a particular website.

There is a famous saying, "horses for courses." Therefore, before you decide the type of marketing, affiliate or display, you must know the kind of industry audience you intend to target. If you do not choose the right audience, and the right channel, you are only wasting your money. See how the other online companies in your industry are doing it.

Personally I'd likely take on the display marketing activities, I personally wouldn't want to manage a group of affiliates. Not that there is anything wrong with it, it's just not for me.
