      I see the same thing.

Google has been doing this for quite a while. It's nothing really new!

It's just that result has a big box, that's all.

Before this change, ranking up top gets you 40 to 60% of clicks

I suspect this change is going to EXPLODE that % rate to 80% or higher

Expect a massive surge in NEGATIVE SEO, flaggings by competitors, as well as consolidation

Writeaway you are NOT going to outrank that site or sites like it. Thos pages are not set merely by normal algo ranking factors

It is a pretty unique SERP. You are not going to see that on the vast majority of keywords.

This sort of thing probably comes up on less than 1% of searches, and I would venture to guess it is drastically less than 1%.

Also another bit of good news is that layout is less likely to occur on buying intent keywords (but some product related pages get nearly as overcrowded)

Time to rely on plain old paid advertising. Or, you could try to rank high on Bing or Yahoo. Or use Bing Ad and Yahoo Gemini. Search only though. Their partner networks are sites that you dont want your offer on. I've viewed them all.

I have to believe that certain companies are able to work directly with Google in order to get their business listed so high. I can't imagine they rely on some of the same organic methods as other people do.

Of course big companies are not relying on the "same organic methods as other people do". They aren't because most of those methods are junk that will never rank a page, but also because they don't have.

These companies are not making special arrangements with Google. They just have something that most companies and especially most internet marketers do not have: a well recognized brand name.

When some unknown company puts out a press release, it hardly ever gets picked up by any news organization of value. When Amazon puts out a press release, it is picked up by all of them.

When Joe Schmo blogger does his 3 posts a week of "high quality content", nobody cares. When he approaches other sites about guest posting on their site, his inquiries are mostly ignored.

When Apple posts something on their blog, it gets noticed. They don't need to go begging for guest posts. They post something to their site and instantly hundreds of other sites are talking about it and linking to it.

Hell, if anything Google is probably harder on some of the big companies because if they get away with something people are more likely to notice.

He can keep begging and pleading for links.

My point was the difference between having a well-recognized brand versus being a virtual unknown is why these big companies seem to be dominating in Google. It's not because of some special arrangement Google made with them like a previous poster tried to say.

    hi,

there were some reports that Google was testing a fourth pay-per-click ad at the top of search result pages, when there are typically only three.

There are so many other ways to drive traffic than just the S.E. results page. I think it is now mandatory to take full advantage of those ways along with the traffic that can be gained by ranking on the first couple of pages of the S.E. results pages.
