Amazon will begin shipping Kindles for use outside the U.S. starting Oct. 19th:

From Amazon's site:

"Travel Internationally with Kindle

Travel internationally and still get books in under 60 seconds. Download books wirelessly in over 100 countries around the world. Stay in touch with news from home by having your newspaper and magazine subscriptions delivered wirelessly while you travel. See wireless coverage map for availability."

Amazon.com: Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6"...Amazon.com: Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6"...

If you're providing books in Kindle format, how do you think this will change up your marketing and reach?

P.S. Unfortunately Canada is *not* one of the 100 countries ...

Trust Apple and Microsoft to jump on the bandwagon, bummer, New Zealand not on the list of countries I see, never mind.

All the more reason to set up a bajillion kindle review blogs. I'm not sure if I'm being sarcastic or not and that scares me.

I hope the Kindle will come to Spain...as an IM, I am thinking how I can make money from it.

      Any ideas?

Here's an interesting quote from that article:

"Currently, more people read e-books on their smart phones than they do on dedicated devices like e-readers."

    Very interesting!

Does anyone have a Kindle? I love the idea of downloading ebooks to a reader, but I'm not sure if I'll miss holding an actual book.

    cheers

I don't HAVE one, but I took a survey. The #2 one is better than the first one, and THINNER, but STILL has conversion problems and, as I recall, NO interface. I'm not going to buy one. MEANWHILE, the industry has knocked $100 off the sweet spot. They are TRYING to keep that temporary, but will likely FAIL.

It is a PITY! If it had a COMPATIBLE micro SDHC connector, and was compatible with TXT and PDF, I would be tempted to buy it. ALAS, Amazon hasn't done that yet. I am TOYING with going to one of two competitors that DON'T have some of the nicer and more expensive amazon features, but DO have the ones I just asked for.

    Hi Steve,

I noticed a few have PDF readers now. An interesting one is the Microsoft that apparents is two screens, and opens and closes like a book.

But yes, I agree PDF would be great.

I think the way the Kindle would be toppled would be if someone else comes up with a better network. Wireless ability to download ebooks I think is huge.

But of course that requires agreements with network providers.

I bought a TiVo recently, and the reason I chose TiVo was because here in Australia we have free tv guides, and the automation that comes along with it. That's what made me choose the more expensive (with less HDD space) product over the competitor.

I wonder if Kindle can keep their edge?

    cheers

Barnes and noble is saying THEY are coming out with one. Technically, I don't considder the Kindle to have an EDGE! It is a nice feature. I would consider it an edge if other things were on a more equal footing.

    Hi Steve,

True - it really depends on what you're after as to whether or not the edge exists.

I guess it's kind of like saying iPods have an edge, when the competing products are generally more powerful, easier to use (is it just me that really doesn't like that spinny circle thing?!), and cheaper.

I'm really interested to see what the other companies bring out, too.

    cheers

After the "1984" scandal many would not consider buying a Kindle. But judging
from the posts in this thread it appears relatively few are aware of Amazons
remote delete capability. Here's one story -

Why Amazon went Big Brother on some Kindle e-books - Ars Technica

There are other followup stories in which Amazon settled a lawsuit and clarified their deletion policy. Anyways, would you buy a reader from a company that can remote delete your books?

Did life exist before ebook readers?

I have an ebook reader (not a kindle) and I don't know how I lived without it. While I don't think I will ever give up books completely, I love the fact that I can now carry around an entire library in my handbag.

My ebook reader works like a usb drive so it is not a problem to upload files. I use it mostly for pdf and the formatting is pretty good. I run into problems with graphs and tables which don't format correctly when it is zoomed in. However if you don't zoom in you get a full pdf page where the text is too small to read. Thankfully most WSO's don't have much advanced formatting so they work well on the ebook reader.

I notice you can buy the international Kindle here in Australia. I looked up their terms for the Kindle authors and find they have not changed.

Authors must have a US bank account to wire money into from Amazon and a Social Security # also. That leaves a lot of international authors still out in the cold!

I just hope they adapt the wireless connection to work with other countries!
At the moment it's all U.S wireless. So you end up paying for the feature but you'll never be able to use it.

The Kindle in Australia works over the 3G network here, so the wireless does work for Aus.

I've noticed some other countries don't allow it - not sure what the numbers are, though?
