Tumblr - A dark horse?

Tumblr seems to be on the rise right now. Do you think one day, Tumblr might be able to compete with the big boys like Facebook and Twitter?

According to wikipedia,

The "like" button, which lets one user tell another that they like his or her content, and the "reblog" button, which easily reposts content from one tumblelog onto another, provide positive feedback that has given Tumblr an 85% retention rate[1], compared with 40% for Twitter.[3]

Tumblr might be used by IMers in future. I'm not familiar with Tumblr but I have a feeling it might just creep into the top of the rankings. What do you think?

Tumblr has been around for a couple of years. It's more like Twitter than Facebook and Google loves Tumblr.

With an Alexa rank of 330, if you use content to market, you should include Tumblr in your plans.

I have a Tumblr page. It sends me traffic and counts for a backlink. Has been doing so for a couple years, now.

I started my first web site about 2 months ago. I followed some WF instructions and made a tumblr page that pointed to my blog. I may have gotten some link juice, but I have received 0 hits from anyone who found my tumblr page, and my tumblr page has never ranked in the top 200 of google or any other search engine. But I can't say that the link juice hasn't mattered, since my site moved to the first page of google, but even so I get at most 1 visitor per day. It would be nice if some of these W2.0 or article directories actually sent some visitors.

I have experienced the same type of results with Tumblr. Just love it too.
Also, I meant that Tumblr is more like Twitter than Facebook being that it is a microblogging platform. It's not exactly like Twitter.

Well, I know nothing about Tumblr. But if I can find some time, I might jump into it, although I already have a Twitter account.

I'm assuming that since Tumblr is like Twitter, then it would be no harm to update both Twitter and Tumblr simultaneously with the same status and tweets?

Can I do that on Ping.fm?

Tumblr isn't like Twitter. Tumblr is for blogging, just like Blogger or WordPress.

I like it because of how clean and simple it is.

Okay. I already have a Wordpress blog and a Twitter account. Would me signing up for a Tumblr account benefit me significantly?

I'm still new to Tumblr. In fact I still know nothing about it, besides the fact that it is a blogging/micro-blogging platform

I guess it depends on how you use it. I have a personal one, but I've never thought of using it for business. It's like Twitter in that it's a micro-blogging platform, but it allows you to post different types of media besides just text (pictures, videos, limited audio files). And your posts aren't limited to 140 characters, although people tend to keep their posts short. And also, it's like Twitter in the way the following/followers are set up. If you're following someone you see everything they post, and if someone's following you, they see everything you post. And if they re-blog your post, all their followers will see the post as well.

I'm not sure if it'll reach Twitter/Facebook status. It's not as interactive as Facebook, and it doesn't currently have the "star power" that drove Twitter to become a household name (ie: celebrities, public figures, gurus posting). Mostly people use it as a journal and/or a way of sharing stuff that they think is cool. If you're going to use it to promote stuff, I would suggest being really, really subtle about it, or people will just unfollow you.
