One big site vs several smaller sites.

I cant afford multiple domains. So I want to build one large affiliate marketing e-commerce site as a case study/free resource provider. In this way I'll cut down on having to fork out for multiple domains and can focus on one project for say the next three years.

Any Tips?

    I love this idea

    As a pro blogger, I dig it also because where your attention and energy goes, grows. Devote your energy to 1 site and 1 niche, and the site grows more quickly versus dividing your attention and energy toward multiple sites.

    My suggestion: generously created an in-depth, valued, free resource through the store first, then monetize. The money is in your generosity. Meaning creating blog posts, videos and podcasts addressing the needs of folks from the niche you choose is the trust-builder, the fuel that makes the site go, the content that makes people take notice. Trusting folks who dig your free value buy what you offer. It is simple. But uncomfortable because you'll keep churning out helpful free content and it may be a minute before affiliate sales flow in.

    Good things do take time. Generosity, patience and persistence win.

    Ryan hit the nail on the head. It is to easy to buy multiple domains and create many sites, but at the end of the day they all need to be maintained. One site is all you need your got a nice time frame to get it going and maybe become the top authority in your niche. Good Luck and save you hard earned money for paid ads to your site in the future !

    The cost of buying multiple domains is negligible compared to the time and effort you'll spend trying to get targeted traffic to a general purpose site.

    If you want to start affiliate marketing on a limited budget, creating a large site or building several small ones aren't your best options. You'd be better off concentrating on one small, tightly-focused site with a clear target market in mind where you can begin to build a relationship with your visitors/subscribers. If you choose your niche well, you can look to expand the site when profits allow, or consider building other, related sites.

      HI Frank. Thanks for the reply and the great feed back. I like the idea of a lazer targeted small specialised site. I considering using my home page as a why you should consider e-commerce for your general market and then branch off with a silo type structure with various relevant niche sites. what do you think?

        I'm not sure I get what you mean regarding the home page. Who are you aiming it at regarding what you call general market e-commerce? Existing businesses? Entrepreneurs? How do you intend to attract them? And how would this tie in with affiliate marketing?

          Hi Frank, thanks again for the feed back. I'm considering aiming at people interested in learning about e-commerce as a profitable niche market. Then on a separate page, I'd focus on a few areas of E-commerce i.e targeted sales and really kunckle down on that area. On each sub category id promote highly relevant e-commerce product solutions.

    Why not just start with one and work on it. Once you get to a certain point then start another and keep going?

    One site ... take time and effort to scale it up. I used to have more than a dozens sites years back ... that was a period when trying a lot of things out. But nothing beats focusing on one site and when you feel it's time to scale it up, spin off with a sub-domain. And for every project that you spin off, funnel it back to the main site.

  • If you cant afford multiple domains, then dont pursue multiple domains. How are you going to master and automate multiple sites when you can even produce 1 that can? Don't get ahead of yourself. You sound enthused, but no amount of creativity can overcome bad economics. Stick with 1 blog, build it up, monetize it like crazy, semi-automate it, then (if you want)... start another blog in a thirsty niche, and do the same thing.

    • Start with one site only
    • Begin from day one to build a subscriber email list
    • Be sure your site is specific, targeted, and in a niche where money flows easily
    • Make sure that you have done your market research so you know what your audience will buy
    • Become the authority on your specialization
    • You can always branch out later into closely related niches (and you will be able to provide your customers with expanded product lines
    • Being "general" and trying to cater to multiple niches will doom your business

    Number one tip...don't get too big for your britches, as my grandmother used to say.

    Right now, you say you can't afford $10/yr for extra domains, but you want to build a large e-commerce site with nothing but affiliate offers.

    A huge, general purpose site works for Amazon. It works for Walmart.

    At this stage of the game you ain't Amazon or Walmart.

    From your comments, it sounds like you also have ambitions of turning your process into an information product of some kind.

    Which leads to tip number two...start small and grow into a larger site.

    First pick a general market you know you can stick with for three years, through thick and thin. For example, the weight loss market, which is indeed a large market, not a niche.

    Next, narrow it down. You're looking for niche within the market large enough to make the project profitable, but small enough that you can laser target your messaging and offers. For example, women under 30 looking to fit into their skinny jeans or men over sixty who want to use diet to manage diabetes.

    Last, build out your site for that niche. Make it work if you can. Then take what you learn from that and repeat the process with another, related niche. Each individual niche should feel like you are creating everything specifically for them.

    Last tip...Install Wordpress and use the multisite function to add new niches via subdomains. This will make maintaining multiple niche 'sites' easier from a mechanical POV. When you can afford the extra $10 for a domain name, you can use multisite to make it function like a standalone site, and use the umbrella domain to direct traffic.

    what i know is that focusing all the energy you can send out to one site, or platform will definitely be better, what you can do according to me will be to apply all the insights you could have to make it more diversified, and rich of great contents, to help you keep folks around! Avoid spamming, and with time it will be great for sure!

    It really depends on your Market (and "vision.")

    For instance Amazon.com started out just selling Books/eBooks and now sells a whole range of products. My best guess is to decide on something then put it into action to see if it's "valuable"/profitable.

    It is really hard to start a business, even online, if you're unable or unwilling to spend $10.00 for domain names. That said, I don't know why anyone would want to start with multiple websites. That seems very counterproductive.

    At the end of the day, it's all about having a product that people want and getting that product in front of the people who may want it. If you can do that, you just have to be able manage profit margins and scale your targeted traffic. Granted, I work with paid traffic so it's quick to scale. But, if you're in the right niche, free traffic sources (Instagram) will at least validate your business and generate cash in.

    My most successful site is less than 10 pages big and took me less than one day to set up. What took time was finding a unique product. A wise man once said that the separation was in the preparation.

    Take what I say with a grain of salt though if you have the patience or desire to hack away at building an authority site for the next three years. Different strokes for different folks as they say.

      Gambino. Thank you. Its great to hear the advice from experienced marketers. I am willing to spend the $10 bucks. The issue there is ignorance. I will do some research on the domain names. I was working on the idea that I would be paying approx $100 a year per domain. Though im most likely going to focus on a why e-commerce site and then use a silo structure to branch off to different niche areas of the market.
