Is This Keyword Doable or Am I Wasting My Time?

Hi everyone - newbie here with a keyword research question.

I have found a 2 word keyword phrase with the following characteristics (from the Google Adwords tool):

Exact Global Monthly Searches: 74,000
Broad Global Monthly Searches: 450,000
Number of Competing Sites (in quotes, on Google): 472,000
Number of Competing Sites (without quotes, on Google): 408,000,000

The top 3 competing sites for the keyword phrase results (in quotes) have the following number of backlinks:

Site #1: 1,154 backlinks from 96 domains
Site #2: 1,000 backlinks from 188 domains
Site #3: 1,024 backlinks from 157 domains

What I'm hoping some more experienced Warriors can tell me is whether this keyword phrase is worth my time. I'm a big fan of Dan Molano and have read all his stuff - he seems to feel that with 100 high PR backlinks, you can make an article rank #1 for a keyword phrase with less than 500,000 competing sites in quotes.

I'd be looking to create an article for this keyword phrase and then build backlinks like crazy to it.

Does anyone have any thoughts out there before I start optimizing for this phase?

Many thanks!

I say do it. You're going to have to do a ton of backlinking, but looks like it's definitely do-able.

What are the PR's of the first 3?

    Nothing is impossible!

havent you seen the movie "The boy who could Fly" ?

if he tried and flew then you can get #1 for that Keyword!

    good luck

Good idea on finding the page ranks. Here they are:

      Site #1: PR 5
      Site #2: PR 5
      Site #3: PR 4

Just for the record, Google doesn't rank sites, only webpages.

So it won't be "Number of Competing Sites (in quotes, on Google): 472,000", it will be number of competing pages. And in reality, those might not be competing pages at all, just ones that were indexed and contained that keyword/phrase

You could have one site with 1,000 pages or more indexed for a keyword/phrase if it is a catalog site, as an example.

Also pay attention to the # of Adwords advertisers. That will tell you a boatload about the competition.

Oops...yes, knew that in theory but definitely used the wrong terminology there. Thanks!

Go for it, Its not gonna happen overnight that is for sure, but just model after what your leading competitors are doing. If you are using firefox get SEOQuake for a tool bar this thing is great and reveals a lot of vital information you need.

Without knowing your keyword phrase, and without seeing your article, and not knowing if there are any other articles on the front page, and knowing the amount of backlinks from the top competitors, I'd say you are taking a big risk - even with EZA and backlink juice.

    Sorry

Every day I check the obituaries. If I don't see my name there, then I know it's going to be a good day!

There are not any articles on the first page of exact search results, but there are several "sub-pages" of domain names.

      i.e. - result 3 is something like abc.com and then result 4 is abc.com/subpage.html

Not sure if that counts for anything.

          Thanks!

I have another keyword phrase I've been evaluating with much lower monthly searches, and I'm concerned it won't bring in enough traffic to justify the efforts. Here are the stats for this three word keyword phrase:

          Exact Global Monthly Searches: 8,100
          Broad Global Monthly Searches: 22,200
Number of Competing Pages (in quotes, on Google): 41,200
Number of Competing Pages (without quotes, on Google): 41,300,00

The top 3 competing pages for the keyword phrase results (in quotes) have the following page ranks:

Site #1: PR 7 (NOTE - this is the main domain's PR; I can't find a PR for the sub-domain page which appears on the results page)
          Site #2: PR 3
          Site #3: PR 3

On the first page of results (in quotes), I see one possible article directory page (it's from Singapore so it's a little unclear - it's streetdirectory.com).

So a couple of questions on this lower competition keyword phrase:

          1) Do you think I'd be able to compete for this keyword phrase with a well keyword-optimized article that I backlinked the heck out of?

          2) Will this bring decent traffic? Even if I achieved a number 1 ranking (assuming a 40% click through for #1 ranking or organic results), that would be 108 visitors a day. I'd be happy with that for one keyword, but I've seen other Warriors talking about competing for keywords with this type of volume, achieving top rankings, and only seeing a few visitors a day. I'm interested to see if you guys think this keyword phrase is even worth it.

Nope, not in the home business niche. But glad to see I'm not the only one shooting for keywords like this.

Go for it, I just started working towards keywords just like this.

And I am a Daniel Malono fan too, I figure if we don't rank how we want it's all cool, it's all part of a learning process.

I am starting my backlinking tomorrow, keep us all updated on how you do!
