Looking for ways to promote family owned online jewellery business

Hello guys,

Our family runs a jewellery company, based in Cyprus that had been operating for the last 30 years. We are specialized in making traditional handmade silver jewellery.

I recently set up our online jewellery shop to promote our products online. On this shop we provide handmade silver jewelry that are very hard to find available online. Those jewellery products are a major success in the local jewellery shops among tourists, especially those from the UK, Russia, USA, France and Germany.

I personally manage all of our online channels (Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube. All of the content we use it's made and edited by us - images, video, text, products

I am asking you suggestion on what I may do to promote our products online? I want to attract high quality affiliates specialized in jewellery but not quite sure how to achieve that without major upfront costs. I am considering a 20% sales commission which I believe it's quite generous according to my research but i am more worrying for the high affiliate network registration fees and the quality of affiliates i may get from them (heard horror stories about scams/chargebacks etc in some of them).

So my question is this:

1. How would you suggest me to find the right affiliates?
2. What other online marketing methods can you suggest to me to increase our reach and conversions?

Thank you in advance!

Kind Regards,
George

    Hi George,

There are probably folk on this platform who won't agree with my suggestions,
but basing things on my recent experiences I would join related FB groups
and Google communities. From there you can not only advertise your jewellery
items, but you can also let folk know about your affiliate scheme and at least
you'll be dealing with like-minded people.

The other place I frequent and although things have gone a bit quieter recently
is Quora. This is like Yahoo Answers on steroids and an excellent place in which
to place relevant questions about your products and services and also to use their
search facility for people asking about anything jewellery related.

Excellent suggestions, and what's even better is that i haven't seen them anywhere else.. but they do make sense! Especially about Quora, I have seen so many articles ranking no1 on Google search so yes that seems very promising.

Thank you for this I will put some efforts in your suggestions and give some feedback later for the results!

Exactly. If you do a Google search on various things then, just look at the amount
of posts which arrive on page one.

Hello dude, what i can suggest you is to go for social platform, as FB, and join some groups over there related to what you are promoting, and i think it will be quiet easy to drive some of the audience on any of your pages.

You actually have quite a few options available to you.

I assume that you are not planning to abandon the offline distribution channel that you already have (i.e. the local jewelry shops in U.S., EU, and Russia that you mentioned earlier).

Have you exhausted your reach in those markets?
There are many, many offline jewelry shops in each of those markets, and a significant portion on your marketing efforts should be directed at identifying more of these shops to expand your presence in each of them.

Anything you can do to assist your retail channels with their own marketing efforts, will
    1. enhance your "brand", and
    2. help them increase sales of your products

Do all of these jewelry shops also have an online presence?

Any ad creatives, promotional campaigns, etc. that you can provide for your own use, should also be made available to your retailers (whether offline jewelry shop, or affiliates).

Do you have an affiliate program set up already?
Don't even bother about trying to recruit affiliates if you haven't set up the affiliate program in advance.

Have you explored the possibility of Drop Shipping on behalf of online retailers? You could allow online retail shops to take orders for your product(s), and then ship directly to the customers when they forward an order to you.

Have you considered letting Amazon sell your products. They have their own network of affiliates already in place, and you wouldn't have to deal with recruiting affiliates, paying commissions, etc.

It's fine to develop an online presence, but I think you really need to plan out your retail distribution model before you expend a whole lot of effort on your online channels.

      Mr Sid,

First a big thanks for your very detailed and careful response. Really more than what I expected, especially from someone with such a great experience as you.

      To answer to your points:

      1. In terms of B2B, we are currently only providing our products to other jewellery shops in Cyprus, so our B2B activities are only local, but we do ship internationally as B2C. When I said that we sell to Russians, Americans etc I spoke about our own local shops and our local partners shops who sell to tourists coming from those nations. So there is a lot of room to grow, but so far establishing new B2B international partnerships proved to be quite hard (made some massive email campaigns with very little response - and got my IP and email domains blacklisted on the way in several cases)

      2. We have plenty of material available and yes, I will add it online for any potential partner as you suggested.

      3. Since the online shop is done via Shopify, I just chose to start with the Refersion app affiliate program. Have no idea how good it my turn to be . So yes now at least i have an affiliate program running (offering 20% on sales)

      4. No i have not considered drop shipping yet. it may be a good option but I guess will require an Aliexpress premium account and lots of organization for it? (i've heard those memberships cost a lot?)

      5. Shopify also offers the chance to offer automatically via Amazon (for a moderate fee) but also I am not sure if its worth the investment. So do you think it may be a wise move to go for it?

      Thanks again for the insights!

    Hi,

There are many Social Media Marketing Channels are available for your Jewelry Business like-

Pinterest- Most users use Pinterest to keep track of the items they hope to buy, and when users "pin" your products, the image is quickly shared with all of their followers who will then pin those and the cycle begins again.

Instagram- It's an opportunity to develop your brand's look and feel. You can then repurpose these images for Facebook.

Boosting- Boosting is when you put money behind your posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. Boosted posts are served to an audience beyond your audience.

Location sharing- Offer your customers an incentive such as 10% off or a special gift to check in at your store on social media. This way their friends and family will see where they are and you will get advertising.

      Hi!

About Pinterest, I was even considering using a bot not long ago, but few people told me that the engagement has dropped a lot over there? Could give it a shot manually though

On instagram, we are already very active, almost uploading daily with lots of content thanks to my amazing girla.

However, so far about boosting posts, i have a negative experience. We do get lots of engagement but very few conversions. I have tried to follow numerous Facebook ads tutorials but I never seem to get the conversion rates they are getting, so I gave up those ads. I was doing niche targeting, only active shoppers, doing the scarcity and urgency tricks, etc but nothing impressive.. Maybe you can recommend any good guide that can help me with that?

Also, great suggestion for the location sharing! never thought of that, and it could work!!

Hello, our page is already made with Shopify, I did test a little Google ads but wasnt so happy with the results (good CTR but very low conversions)

About Etsy, Amazon and eBay, I have considered all of them but as far as I know, they all require some membership fees, so wasn't sure if it will worth the investment. Would you recommend us to supply our good for all of them? If you had to choose just one for a start which one would be?

    Hi George,

#1 - I love Cyprus. I did a house sit in Nicosia 2 years ago. Fab place. Paphos is a paradise; 4 day trip there.

#2 - Listen to shmeeko69's rocking advice. Sharing helpful insights on jewelry, through niche specific Facebook Groups, Google Plus Communities and Quora groups related to your niche draws high quality affiliates to you and also markets your online business, via your expertise. Help folks for free on these platforms. Folks dig your help, click through to your site and potential sales grow.

I'd add to start blogging. Super authority builder and business builder too. Buy your domain and hosting for a Wordpress dot org blog and help folks out with common issues related to your niche. This gives you even more cred on FB Groups, G Plus Communities and on Quora too.

      Hi Ryan!

#1 I'm honored to hear that! We actually come from Paphos, an this is where I'm currently living too! You should come back again! (and send me a pm to meetup )

#2 Already slowly started working into that! It does seems as a great advice, no monetary cots, just time investment so be it

About blogging, I already maintain a blog on the shopify store. i don't upload it enough though. Do you think i should do an entirely separate blog and send traffic there, or just the one I have should be fine (assuming i update it more)

      Thanks!!

You need to work on a well designed SEO strategy for your website.

    Step 1: Keyword Research

The first step is to first identify the keywords that your site can REALISTICALLY target. For this article, we'll use "jewelry" as an example. Unless you have the brand authority or budget to compete with companies such as Home | Tiffany & Co. and Engagement Rings, Wedding Rings, Diamonds, Charms. Jewelry from Kay Jewelers, your trusted Jewelry Store, the possibility of ranking for the keyword "jewelry" for any small or medium business is practically none.

Instead, your first goal is to find a viable niche within this competitive industry that is achievable. Mindmapping is a great tool to organize your keyword concepts and buckets.

Step 2: Identify Your Top Competitors

Once you have your keyword list, type those terms into Google and write down the sites that show up in the top 10. Often you'll see the same sites appearing again and again. You'll want to identify the sites that rank for many keywords in that niche, and add them to your list of competitors.

Again, SEMrush can be a valuable tool as you can type the domain into the search box and determine their organic traffic and number of organic keywords ranking in Google.

    Step 3: Analyze Your Competitors

Now that you know who your competitors are, you need to dive deep into the profile. You can start by grabbing general metrics for them. LinkResearchTools has a great tool called "Juice Tool" that can be used to get the general metrics for each competitor, including Link Velocity, Domain Authority, Inbound Links, Social Shares, Domain Age, and much more. Here's an example of some of the data:

Step 4: Social Media and Content Audit

Now that you have an understanding of who your competitors are and their backlink profile, you'll need to research their content marketing and social media strategy. How often do they share updates on social media? What is their engagement ratio? How many active followers do they have? Here's a template for a social media audit questionnaire that can be used as part of this process.

Evaluate their blog, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest accounts. This will help you determine how active you need to be in terms of creating and sharing content, and again, to determine your first targets in terms of follower acquisition and engagement ratio.

Step 5: Determine Your Barrier to Entry and Strategy

Once you have a thorough understanding of your competitors, you can create your strategy based on the averages from the data you uncovered.

First you'll want to know how many links you'll need to acquire, and the quality of those links, to start showing up in the search results. Of course this will be based on the averages of the sites ranking for the keywords you chose. It's important to avoid keywords that have a strong presence of sites with massive domain authority, as mentioned above. These domains are tough to beat as they tend to be highly trusted and rewarded by Google.

Next you'll want to determine how many links based on topical categories you'll need. For example, if you need 100 links to start showing up, how many of those should be in your direct niche vs. a more generic niche or a related niche? Out of those 100 backlinks, how many should have a Domain Rank of 80 or more? Seventy or more? Between 60 and 40? Figure out a breakdown based on the industry averages so you can set targets for how to sculpt your backlink outreach and acquisition.

Finally, you'll determine how many articles to share on your blog every week, how many should be keyword vs topically focused, how often to post on social media, how many followers to acquire, etc.

The data you acquire from this research will form the backbone of your SEO strategy, and will create the structure of your campaign. In such a difficult space, it's important to arm yourself with data, otherwise you will easily waste resources without seeing a return on investment.

What an incredible guide you gave me! My goodness Many many thanks for this!

I did research about this in the past, but wasn't that clear in my mind on how to set up a strategy for this. Your explanation made everything clearer.

I was indeed considering buying backlinks, from what I believe is called PBNs, right? There are so many providers out-there though, and they do require a quite high investment so wasn't sure to which direction to go.

If anyone of the forum can suggest any of those services in PM (Assuming we are not breaking any Forum's rules, please do it! )

Also, about backlinks, do you think that manually posting on blogs etc is worth it anymore? or just go for the paid services?

  • instead of affiliates, have you considered getting social media influencers or brand ambassadors instead? if you have loyal fans who also have a considerable following, maybe you can work out a commission deal with them?

I did consider that and even tried to persuade some big influences to post a pic of them with our jewellery set and in return to keep them for free .. Well, all rejected ...
and asked for some big amount of payments 2+K per post which was a no no for me, so then i got dissapointed and gave up.

I know my mistake is that I aimed too high, probably smaller influencers would have accepted but have yet to try to reach them. Do you think giving them a commission on sales would be more tempting than giving them a free jewellery set (around $80-$120)

Since you already have an Instagram page, I would suggest that you start building up a lot of followers. You can do this with hashtags. Start doing some research on the best hashtags for jewelry or for any hashtag that is related to your Instagram post, and use them in the caption of every post. It is one of the best ways to receive organic traffic to your website for free.

Due to the fact that I am not an expert in the Jewelry niche, I could look for forums about jewelry, fan pages about jewelry, instagram pages on the subject.

Ultimately, what I may be looking for are social network pages, and/or websites that have a lot of traffic interested in Jewelry. These pages and websites may not be doing affiliate marketing (This may actually be a good thing as their audience may not be subjected to a lot of marketing). However, if they accept to make a post about your store or email their list (in exchange of a commissions on sales), that would amount to affiliate marketing.

I would also like to suggest Ebay as a part of your marketing plan. This is a place where people go to buy stuff. Millions of them. Shopping portals like Rakuten.com and Pricegrabber are great options too.

Just make sure once you start a new advertising venture, tap it out, automate it, and THEN move on to the next advertising source. Never half-do a project or try to managing multiple things at once if you dont have the personnel to do it.

That's one of the main issues now. So many wonderful ideas i got from this Forum, and somehow need to prioritize them. For the online activities it's mostly me and in part my gf, so need to be strategic in the next steps. Maybe need to hire someone just for the online marketing activities and help me out with all that as this is getting overwhelming!

Ebay sounds a great option, however have to see if it's one that's worth taking as priority, or going foe Etsy instead or Amazon, or other shopping portals as those you suggested.

Also thanks for the link, really great stuff in there! This Forum is a treasure, can't believe I just found about it!

Any of your jewellery suitable for special occasions?

If yes partner with stores that sell related items. I mean, if anything you sell can go with weddings, approach bridal shops.
Also, look into www.etsy.com - was made fir people like you.

    Hello George
I would be looking at connecting with physical stores across the EU, in fact there is a platform where you can present your proposal for others to partner with you. Here in the UK there events such as the Spring Fair (there's also one in the autumn) at the NEC near Birmingham this is a wholesalers trade show and on the exhibition stands there are signs inviting agents to discuss terms. I have seen similar events in Germany and France If its of interest to explore these opportunities further do send me a link to your website and I can put some more specific proposals forward. As an aside when an item of jewelry is sold from your shop do you put the purchase in a small bag that the item can be kept in that also includes a card with your contact details and images of other items available? When holidaymakers return home their purchases might be admired by friends and this is an ideal additional sales opportunity

      Hello!

Those are great suggestions indeed, however at least for participating into exhibitions will require considerable resources (money, time and also our several members of our team being there). So even though I like it an idea, I am not sure how feasible it is for us now? Still I am interested to learn more about those exhibitions. Pm coming!

Currently we just put the receipt, and a business card. And yes a small jewellery bag. But a small catalog could be useful indeed in the sense that you describe it. Need to think for something useful but small in size.

    Hi George,

I wrote a huge response and then just lost it - so retyping now

    1. Affiliate marketing networks exist online, which you pay for, but they do the legwork for you. This is a great option if you don't know what you are doing, are short of time, and have a bit of budget.

If budget is tight and you are clear in your objectives with who you need to target, I would recommend testing the waters with LinkedIn, targeting people through job title and location, and then checking out their profiles to see if they align with what you are doing. You sound like the perfect sort of business to have an 'Ambassador' - like how celebrities support certain brands - someone that would be worth investing a decent commission in, who has a really good loyal following of their own to tap into.

    2. Online marketing in your space will most likely see the biggest wins on Facebook and Instagram if you are B2C. If B2B as well, add Twitter to your priority list too. I would test some advertising on FB and Insta if you haven't already. Obviously geo-target your customers, and look out for other insights to further target, the more you learn about them.

You will need to focus on great visuals - video and imagery of what you produce. If you haven't already, make a 'hero' video, showcasing your story from start to finish (something really emotive, the family story, from making to showcasing, shipping out to customer etc). You can make these really easily yourself on vidbuild.com

Then you want to use social scheduling so you save time instead of managing this yourself I can recommend buffer.com which removes your manual handling of social media.

If you need more help let me know, happy to assist.

      Hello Shelley,

Sorry to hear that you your reply got lost. Happened the same to me before, quite frustrating. I appreciate that you went to this detailed response again.

Fantastic idea about approaching via linkedin! i did use their recruiter tool sometime ago and was pretty happy with it, but that was for a totally different project. So i guess it will work again this time

My marketing budget is relatively small yes, so I am hesitant to spend the majority of it just by joining a high profile affiliate network.

Great idea about the video too. Not sure how willing the rest of the family will be to participate but will at least ask and see.

Thank you for directing me to buffer too, looks useful to automate the trivial posting schedules. Will try the free plan and go from there!

Many thanks for the awesome tips!

Search Engine Optimization aims to increase organic visitors to a website. With an increased Organic Traffic, there are the following benefits: -
        1. Increased rankings in search results.
        2. Building brand identity and its awareness online.
        3. Possible Leads (which is the ultimate aim).

    Hey George,

    1. There is no easy way to find the affiliates, usually they find you once you join any big aff network, but this might not be the ideal way
    2. In any business building a community around a certain product(s)/service is the best way to develop your biz..it can be an email list/social media following/blog subs/former customers (they can recommend your products to other people if they were happy with their purchase).
ALL THESE = Assets (and they pay dividends later)

There is no way you can loose them, instead the affiliates can stop promoting your offers at some point...so this is smth to think about

U need to make a plan defining your potential customers, where he/she is spending the time online and start targeting them using the tools and budget you have currently (if they spend time on facebook/twitter/etc then start making some Facebook ads with a small budget for 3-4 days to see what sales you get). Also you can make a contest offering some free products in return for emails/engagement/etc (people love contests) and promote it on the social platforms and you can build a huge following in a short time

Are there any influencers in your industry? (people with high number of followers) if yes, u can contact them to see if they would want to promote your products in exchange for a small fee(or gift).

Make sure you stand out from the competition and write some very nice product descriptions and headlines making your products look very appealing to your market.

I hope it helps. Good luck and many sales for many years to come.

      Hello Radu,

That is a very interesting way to think about this. Building the online brand on the long run should definitely be a primary goal indeed. I was thinking that affiliates will indirectly help build more interest and eventually brand following, but have yet to figure out how to effectively create that high engagement with our own content as well. Buidling the email list and campaigns proved to be the hardest challenge for me so far yet.

I haven't really thought of a contest (even though i saw before a bunch of them). That's definitely something worth trying!

About influences, I did try but at least the top ones are very expensive. So need to lower down my standards a bit

Thank you for your great recommendations!

    Hey George,

Sounds like you have social media channels in place. I didn't see you mention Pinterest initially which is an ideal place for you. Pinterest has sent me traffic & buyers in fashion accessories/decor niches. Pinterest also gives your efforts longevity as I get repins from pins I made over 3 years ago. That is not true with tweets or Facebook posts. Ignoring Pinterest for your jewelry niche is a mistake as it can very well be your best Social Media platform IMO.

As far as attracting the right affiliates, go where they already are by joining the right affiliate network. You know affiliates aren't looking for new jewelry merchants in Facebook groups (that's crazy)... they look for them in the merchants listed in their affiliate networks. Shareasale looks like it has currently 163 active jewelry merchants. 20% commissions will attract affiliates who often are looking for new merchants to try out... but so would 15% or less. If your site converts, affiliates will continue promoting as well new affiliates wanting to promote you. Yeah some search for independent affiliate programs using Google but most like the trust & reliability of promoting merchants in affiliate networks. In fact, many affiliates will not work with independent affiliate programs... I prefer not to. That means you are immediately not tapping into a large network of existing affiliates by using your independent affiliate program. I've seen numbers out there that 700,000 affiliates are signed up with Shareasale (of course most likely aren't producing much or in your niche). Shareasale has a one-time network access fee of $550. Here's a blog post sharing advice to recruit affiliates within the network. Recruiting the Right Affiliates

So let me be very clear on this. Affiliates who are producing physical product sales are all hooked up with large networks like Shareasale, CJ and Linkshare. See the top affiliate networks at https://mthink.com/top-20-affiliate-networks-2017/ . You need to be on Shareasale & not trying to build an affiliate program as an independent. According to AffStat Affiliate Marketing Statistics -- The source for affiliate marketing statistics and benchmarks, over 55% of all affiliates promote Shareasale merchants. I guarantee that % would be much higher if they just questioned physical product affiliates 90%+ IMO). Wikipedia says 86% of afflliates are connected to Shareasale.

As far as Social Media influencers... many of them promote affiliate programs and are hooked up with the networks with merchants in their niche. Don't pay them an upfront fee.

You know, this reply is beyond valuable to me, and I'm really really grateful for it! It answers a lot of questions that I had and needed confirmation.

I was considering shareasale for some time, and indeed was very hesitant if the starting fee will actually pay back soon, or will be another waste. But the sheer numbers you provided, as well as your personal experienced opinion pretty much give answer to my doubts.

Indeed the affiliate program we just started is not as well promised as I thought it would be.

Another challenge I see is to make sure that out website is indeed converting as it should, and rewards the affiliates as it should. I tried to follow several guides into this matter, but the final test will be on the actual results. Hopefully some affiliates will also give me their own insights into this.

About the influencers, are those programs restrictive to them? Or maybe they could consider a program that is within the same network an niche? I'm having a bit of trouble to decide how to offer them a compelling package (commissions, free jewellery, + payout)?

Last, big thanks for directing me also into Pinterest. Indeed i neglected it, and that will change very soon, thanks to you and few others who suggested it! Kudos guys!

You know what influencers who promote merchant products like? Money! Give it to them on a commission basis. Now if they produce a large amount of sales then you could give them a higher affiliate commission if you desire (15% goes to 20% for example). You can set up tiered payouts for affiliates. Yes - free jewelry for some influencers with a "large" following may be helpful. My advice is to ask the staff at Shareasale once you get hooked up the proven methods that have worked for others as well as identifying influencers in your niche.

You said "text," rather than sales copy. So, that might be the problem.

The majority of Shopify stores I've seen have HORRIBLE sales copy (if they have any at all).

Their copy reads like a cold, specifications list:

    * The material
    * The weight
    * The size
    * The color
    * Etc.

And, if that's all you provide... that's boring.

You also need to tell your prospects the story behind the item. How it was crafted. What the design signifies. Some history. That sort of thing.

Nobody "needs" jewelry. Rather, buying jewelry is about beauty and emotion. So, in addition, describe those things.

You've been given a lot of traffic suggestions (which is great). But, you also need to focus on photography, sales copy, and conversions. Otherwise, you'll just send a lot of traffic to a page where people don't buy anything.

That is a very interesting approach that indeed I had neglected. We do indeed have some long history, and each item represents a patern / part of our culture. I was considering adding some more info previously but then thought that visitors don't want to get bother with too much content, so I chose to keep it simple.

But at least I can do some A/B testing, and adding stoyryline to few products and see how well it performs!

      Thanks for your suggestion!

There's an old saying in advertising, "The more you tell, the more you sell." As long as your sales copy is interesting (you can't bore people into buying), longer copy is best.

Yes, I did try Fb advertising but with limited success as compared to other promotions. I have really no clue what I am doing wrong:

I did a compelling ad (carousel) with beautiful images, engaging descriptions, scarcity call, limited offer call, made some detailed niche targetting (engaged shoppers, and other options custom to my audience) BUT not the results that I hoped for.

    George,

I cannot help with the first question, but I can with the second.

When it comes to marketing something like this online, I think content and social are your best friends. I would do videos of what you create and use a YouTube channel to show off your creations. I would also take pictures, especially if you can get someone to model the pieces, and blast Instagram and other social media channels with the pieces regularly.

I think to start, you need to make sure you understand your customer and customer base.

Do you know your main customer demographic? If so, do you know the average age, sex, etc?

From there, do you know where this demographic often resides online?

I have noticed that the offline customers demographics (tourists) are typically different than the ones online. Which I'm still trying to figure out why.

Mostly we appeal to women above 25, who have affinity to handmade silver. Now the issue is about location targeting as some countries have much much higher CPC than others, which causes strain with our budget

    Hello..

Here are seven ways to promote your business online for free.

1] List your business with local listing services

If you want to grow your business, it's very important that people can find your business very easily on Google searches and it shows up on Google Maps. So, the best thing you can do is list your business with local business listing.

All you have to do is fill out the form and register, then get your business verified through their confirmation process, which can be done either with a phone call or snail mail.

2] Use social media for your promotion

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, instagram etc. Are the best way to promote your business for free.

    3. Start a blog

A blog not only helps your company get its name out through followers, but is a way to connect with your consumers more directly.

    4. Put up multimedia on YouTube and Flickr

YouTube provides a free way to distribute creative promotional videos the same way a Flickr profile can also help by giving you one place to compile all the photos for your business, and allows you to link back to your website.

    5] SEO your company website

Search engine optimization cannot be underestimated in the world of constant Googling.

    6] Press releases

It's a powerful media tool to use to help generate publicity, and having free distribution of them is a bonus.

7] Join a relevant online community and contribute

Every niche has communities online that you can get involved in. But just signing up for a forum and posting every once in a while about your business isn't beneficial for anyone, and will likely just annoy people. Passively promote your business by putting a link in your signature or mentioning it only when the context is appropriate.

    Hey George,

You know I had a friend in the fashion business, clothing and apparels. His was a very similar story where they had a traditional business that was working for many years. Now looking at the changing times he was tasked with going online with this business.

He was very excited. He was very computer savvy and also had an MBA degree to his advantage.

    But he failed miserably.

I asked him what had happened. He told me the entire story.

He first created an commerce website that could sell clothing and apparels of his brand. He spent a good amount of money getting his store right.

Then he hired a bunch of youngsters who said they know a lot about SEO and Social Media and ever thing. They would put his store on a fire.

12 months down the line nothing of that sort happened.

There was a lot of views to his online store but none of them were looking for clothes or apparel. Or they were not interested in the store for some reason.

The old guys (his dad) woke up one day and told him that this exercise was worthless and that they had lost money instead of making it in the online experiment. So they decided to stop the project.

Then I asked him what does he think went wrong. What he said I can still not forget.

He said that we did not build the right wings for the online store to fly. We were focusing more on the website and the traffic but the entire sales machine online was not working right from beginning.

How did he come to this conclusion? Well he studied some of the best online websites in his space. He compared these websites to his own. He realised where he had gone wrong.

It was not about the website. It was not about the traffic. It was about the sales engine.

There was no proper strategy that he had employed that would bring him sales consistently when someone landed on his page. He had no idea how many visitors it would take to make a sale. He had no idea what was the cost of the traffic vs the cost of the sales.

It was more of a spaghetti on the wall kind of thing. No one could predict whether it would stick or not.

Before you go ahead and get a bunch of affiliates. Do you have a good sales machine online?

My advice would be to build this sales machine online first doing small experiments with smaller amounts of traffic. Iron out any problems you have in the machine from finding the customer to the refund stages.

Once that is done you can invite as many affiliates as possible. Remember that the only job of an affiliate is to get you the right traffic. It will be the job of your sales machine to convert that traffic into leads and sales.

If your sales machine is not good. And you don't know clearly what it can do. Then you cannot blame it on the affiliates later. By experience I can tell that you are going to blame the affiliate when the business fails.

Because I could see that statement in your question. What if the affiliates are bad? No the affiliates just want to earn commission and if you give them a bad sales machine they cannot earn commissions and they will just leave as soon as they join you.

So think about this. We can discuss this privately in case you are interested in putting your business online for good.

      Hello Amit,

Thanks for bringing up this topic and the very interesting story of your friend. In fact, conversions do matter, and I had been experimenting a bit with what may work or not. But still long way to go, and much more A/B testing to be done.

To be honest, I am taking this slowly now, because some other matters came up. But I can see your point that is a very valid one. Would love to speak personally about it too.

I would reach out to social media..there are some really powerful platforms out there. You could also try to find like minded jewelry channels on Youtube and reach out to offer them an affiliate opportunity. You know those beauty gurus on Youtube? They get tons of sponsors and PR packages for just promoting them on their channels. It's just an idea, but it could be built and expanded upon.

Wow very interesting. If you want to promote your family jewellery business, I would suggest you participate in online auction. I have enter once last year and you would be surprise on the attraction. Of course, your jewellery must be something special and not easy available in common market. Perhaps, you could advertise in FB and Google as well.

First of all, set your add value to your affiliate offer // register with some cpa network as (pay per sale program) // set a suitable commission.

Some large jewelry chains offer their own affiliate programs directly on site, including Kay and Blue Nile. Commissions on sales from brand-name merchants like these are normally around 5 to 7 percent. While it takes longer to sign up for programs on a one-by-one basis, the long-term rewards of marketing reputable brands may pay off.

There are challenges that face affiliate marketers in the jewelry business. However, success is possible if you take the right steps to find your product nice, develop an excellent marketing plan, formulate optimum merchant partnerships and build out a quality website.

    Good Luck!

Thanks mate! I know those companies offer their own programs but sadly i have to rely on other programs to get the exposure i want than making my own (not enough resources for this).

Had a few issues lately with other tasks so didn't pursue it as I wanted, but will be soon back to the game!

    Hey George,
I definitely think that Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest are very important channels to cultivate. Pinterest has actually greater female audience and it's treated by many users as the place where to go to find new products online.

For affiliates, I would contact Instagram influencers (Instagram accounts in your niche with more than 100k followers and give them 100% commission on front-end products. Make sure your funnel/online shop has quality backend offers strongly related to front-end products.

      Hi there!

100% commission? Isn't that a huge risk to take? What if my other related products don't sell so well, )and I assume it won't since the influence will only attract buyers of a specific product?

    Hey George ,

The solution to your problem is not more marketing or affiliates, it the positioning of your business with your tribe or customers.

In other word , your customer are not seeing you as an expert in your field , they are seeing you as a salesman and most people don't like being sold to , however they love to buy from people they trust.

Additionally , From your explanation it appears that your business cash flow is not self sustaining - this means that your investment portfolios are are not feeding each other properly to enable your operating capital to sustain long term marketing.

If you have to always market heavily , you cash flow structures need fixing.

Let me get back to the marketing aspect your problem

Start with the end of your sales funnel, when people go to your website or store or receive a package from you ...are they feeling WOWED or are they disappointed. As soon as you contact a customer , they must be impressed.

Your marketing campaigns are focused on trying to get a sale and not to providing value. If you are selling jewelry , then you must be an expert at some level. This expertise is exactly what your customers are looking for , they want guidance to choosing the best item for them. They want to feel like you honestly care.

Here what to do & this is also applicable for anyone reading this post ...stop advertising your store or products.

Instead advertise on all advertising medium a FREE 7-10 day online course on how to recognize Real Jewelry from Fakes. Each video must be exceptional value ...don;t give people hog wash....tell them

How to recognize quality jewelry from fakes
    How not to be scammed

    Different types of diamond
    Different quality of gold

How and When to buy expensive jewelry

How to spot a scam artist

    Trick of jewelry stores etc

Your ads in you ad campaign should be selling the 10 days course eg

FREE 10 Day Amazing Course on Choosing Quality Jewelry and Prevent Being Scammed

The ad must then lead to an email system like aweber which delivers the 10 day s of video content

In the signature of each email PS: Learn More about Secret Sale

You see you are positioning yourself as an expert and people love to take advise from experts and people they trust.

You must build up your email list and provide them quality expert advice about jewelry. There say something like this

I am not trying to put any pressure on you and want you to make the right choice for your self. If this is right for your please click the link below to learn more about our secret sale

The second aspect of my suggestion is really for you to understand that your cash flow foundations needs fixing

Marketing + Product = Some Sales

Marketing + Added Value + Products = Plenty sales

You must funnel some of your cash flow into different investment instrument such as low price high dividend stock, rental income and businesses that does not relate to your primary business. In this way , you will insulate your cash flow from fluctuations in you jewelry industry.

    Cash Foundation 1 Jewelry
    Cash Foundation 2 Rental income
Cash Foundation 3 low price high dividend stock
    Cash Foundation 4 Other businesses

If you take the advice and stop trying to sell , instead educate and excite for free , customers will be running after your business

    In conclusion ,

Give Value first = More Money
    More Value = Plenty Money
Even More Value = Plenty Plenty Money

Send some of your pieces to girls that have a big fashion following on youtube and instagram.

If you can work out an endorsement deal with just one or two with big audiences, it would give your brand a boost and set you up to recruit quality affiliates

How much traffic do you already get to your website? You can run an Adwords Retargeting campaign.

In addition to that, I'm a fan of a normal Google Search Ad campaign since you can optimize the campaign down the zip code level, time of day, day of week, ad, keyword and device in order to continually drive down your cost per acquisition. Also people searching are further down the sales funnel than somebody on Facebook who just happens to see your ad.

I'd also consider tinkering around with Google Shopping Ads, but I've never ran one of those campaigns so I can't tell you much there.

Now I get around 50 visitors per day, not sure if this is considered a god stat but it's almost triple than what I had when i started this post. However, I have almost halted the catalog as we are going through some rapid changes in the structure of the business. So even though we have more visitors the available products for sale are not that many for the moment.

I did tried dome google search ads before but didn't get any good results. CPC was quite expensive, conversions quite low. Maybe my targeting was too broad? or some other issue down the funnel? Do you get a good return with Search Ads?
