Is this project worth the pay and time? (Build a list of 3,000 emails)

Hello,

I'm new here and thought I'd get some feedback from anyone to see if this project is worth the pay and my time.

I was brought on board for this freelance type project for this new product that has not launched yet. They currently want me to build a list of 3,000 emails and will pay me $2,000 for all 3,000 or $250 per 500 emails I get for them. I will not be compensated for my time at all and will only get paid when I reach either goal.

They expect me to reach these goals organically in about 2 months time. This just doesn't seem realistic at all within the deadline and only using free organic traffic methods. To me, this just seems like a time waster and I feel I can be using my time elsewhere on my other projects.

What are your thoughts? Let me know what you guys think!

    At the end of the day, the bold part is the only thing that matters.

    I'm a big believer in performanced-based pay. But, the acquisition of emails is a relatively hard thing to pay based on performance - not all emails are equal.

    But, without more information about you, them and what they provided (if anything) regarding landing pages, giveaways, traffic, etc, it's tough to say. My guess would be that they have limited business experience and/or finances and that this would end up being a bad deal for you.

      Thanks for the feedback! You are so right, it does seem like they have very limited business experience. They provided me a landing page that is linked with Mailchimp and they expect me to mainly reach traffic using Instagram, Reddit, Facebook Etc.

      It just seems like they are asking a little too much and they don't want to provide any incentive at all. They rejected my idea of a giveaway or discount for the product at launch. I might just have to pass on this project. Thanks again!

      Exactly! We do need to give something in return for their email. A simple message stating that a new product is coming out just won't cut it in these circumstances. Thanks for the feedback!

      Thanks for the feedback! I'd rather take the time to build an email list of 3,000 subscribers with my own business. I feel 3,000 emails on my own list will be way more valuable than $2,000 depending on how I go about using it.

    Welcome to forum buddy.

    As Gambino said, this line sums it up:

    You answered your own question. For increased clarity, I agree 100%. Any time you see something as a time waster and feel drawn toward other projects, honor your intuition and move towrd the other projects by letting go the lead weight quickly.

    As for the money, you will make more money doing what you love and feel clear on versus taking a job based solely on the dough, because your resistance to the job and lack of clarity manifests as struggle, straining and usually pain in the butt clients. Flip-side; when you take on jobs based on what feels fun, the profits rise quickly and you align with fun, awesome, perfect match style clients.

      Why spend two months building somebody elses business? (Unless, of course, you need the money badly). $2K for 2 months' work doesn't sound like a real profitable trade and all the risk is on you!

        I agree with Steve! Why not give in the effort for your own business? Try to find out how they are willing to use that list? How will they monetize it? Then whether you can do it yourself.

        Do some calculations and assess profitability. If you see any green signal, do it for yourself.

    I depends on what resources you have for this project (u need to give something in return for getting their email, u need a lander with a lot of organic traffic or targeted traffic, etc)..

    Anyway make some calculations and see if it's worth it..
    You can estimate the conversions based on the the niche, quality of traffic, giveaways, etc and see if it's doable and profitable for you in as little as 2 months... If they have already a good amount of quality traffic coming to their site..it might be doable..

    I think your instincts on this one are spot on. My gut tells me that you might have a difficult time collecting once they get what they want.

    I'd probably turn the project down unless they were willing to deposit the $2k in an escrow account before I started.

    You can be kinda terrible at email marketing and still make each email worth a couple bucks.

    What they are offering you is 50 to 67 cents per email.

    And they want you to get it all on free traffic too?

    Doesn't sound worthwhile.

    Like Ryan mentioned, you already answered your question. If you do not believe in something, then you won't give your 100% to it and ultimately you won't reach your goal. In your case it is a bad thing. You hustle for 2 months and if you cannot create 500 or 3000 email leads organically, you wont get paid. That is a real bummer.

    If you are not sure you can make it work, do not waste your time on it. Use the time to build a blog or a product that will help teach others what you know. It will get you much more returns and more than that, satisfaction for time well spent.

    If they don't compensate you for the time you spend I would just do it on the side to your business or job...

    Putting together 3000 quality emails can take a lot of time. It all depends on your level as it comes to list building.

    Honestly, if you can put together 3000 emails, just do it for yourself. If leads are good you should be able to extract at least $1/lead/month, which means $3,000/ month. A much better deal

    Well, the others are right. You already have the answer.

    I'm quite fond of hiring freelancers--especially Filipinos since they're often willing to work with flexible terms--but I can tell that's a hard bargain they're driving. They don't look like they have that much knowledge on doing business online. Their goals are pretty unrealistic for the time frame they gave you. You're better off working on another project.
