Hoplinks making me want to give up before i have even started?

Hi, I am new to posting here and new to affiliate marketing.
I have been trying to get promotions going but have hit a brick wall with placing codes into content I want to advertise?
Specifically <a href="http:// MY AFFILIATE LINK CODE HERE title="Buy" alt="Buy">Buy</a>.
More importantly the <a href=" and </a> begining and end.
I'm sometimes ok getting them into things like WordPress, depending on the link providers, but when it comes to other things like e-book makers or Graphic Design makers or various other content creators...... I can't even convert them to convert in link shorteners as they say invalid links?
I really could do with some advice here as its making me give up before I have even started :-( :-(

    There are many different ways to do what you are trying to do.

    One common method is using a php redirect.

    You will need to do some research and either get help with some basic coding or learn how to do it yourself.

    One tip is to not rely on some editors as they will often change codes. Look at using plain text when pasting links and get an understanding of what you need to do and can do.

    There is a learning curve to overcome and it is best you get a grasp of what you need to do because these are the basic steps one must take if you want to succeed online.

    If I just tell you how to do it you won't learn so hopefully you are encouraged to seek out the various methods and learn to identify what to use in each situation.

    Many people will have different ideas but a good thing about using a php redirect script is if you change links you can do it in one place and not have to change your content.

    Another thing is you can retarget the traffic that goes via your redirect.

      Thank you for that reply. I will look into PHP redirects and seek out some tutorials or something.
      Will this method adequately allow me to place them into link shorteners and and various e-book creators and other such programmes?

    One thing is for sure ... if you want to be a successful online business owner or marketer, you need to learn to be a problem solver, first and foremost. You will face challenges and problems (technical and otherwise) around every corner. Giving up too easily or hastily is never the solution to your dilemma.

      Yeah, i think i was probably over exaggerating but its just getting very frustrating trying to get these <a href= inserts to work.
      Been trying for ages now and generally cant find the right info to tech me which is why i asked here!

      Ian, there are two things to look at.

      One is the actual <a> code. Computers are marvelous things, but they don't do well interpreting intentions. The link code has to be exactly what is expected. Use ' when the code expects " and it won't work. So double check your code.

      For example, the sample you posted in your OP is missing a ".

      The other thing to look at is the application you are trying to use. Most link shorteners I've used don't require the full html, just the actual url itself. And some programs, like ebook makers, don't do links at all, no matter what format. Check the documentation for each program you are having trouble with.

      Any good html tutorial can teach you how to format links for applications that require html.

        I am now looking up some HTML tutorials as i guess it would helpful for me to know this if i'm going to promote these kind of links.

        If you could just elaborate on 2 small point you made would be really apreciated/

        You mentioned that my code was missing a ". This code was copied directly from the link provider (obviously with the actual affiliate code removed) so i assume this would be a fault on the link provider? I aslo thought that those codes had to be left as they where printed or the tracking codes wouldnt track to your account?

        Pretty much on the same topic, if uses just the http://"MY AFFILIATE CODE", without all the bits at the begining and the end, would the code still track properly?

    Hi Ian,

    Ozi, Steve and John speak wisdom, from practical tips and mindset-wise too.

    I know it's frustrating and scary to run into technical problems; I am freaking tech allergic LOL. Just yesterday I had slow-speed-issues on my Chromebook but simply said "screw it", did a Powerwash and all works perfectly now.

    Take this attitude going forward; I may be frustrated, but either I will figure it out or I will connect with generous, knowledgeable folks, and they will help me figure it out. A solution will reveal itself through my effort or through the effort of helpful people available, either on Warrior, or through their blogs, emails, products or services.

    This mindset helps you move forward with grace, ease and immense success. The journey gets easier and easier when you believe that no matter what happens, help is always there. Just requires some digging, and a sense of calm, peaceful knowing.

    Meditation don't hurt either my friend LOL

    Assuming that MY AFFILIATE LINK CODE HERE was the url to the vendor containing the affiliate ID, it should have been:

    Code:
    <a href="http:// MY AFFILIATE LINK CODE HERE" title="Buy" alt="Buy">Buy</a>
    You need the closing quote mark or it won't work.

    Second point:

    Maybe. Depends on how the application you are using treats URLs. If it did track properly (convert the url into a clickable link), it would show the full URL, including the affiliate ID.

    From a technical point, this is no big deal. From a marketing standpoint, some people don't trust affiliate links and other will strip them out and insert their own, especially if you're in the IM/MMO space.

    For each application, the answer will be somewhere in the documentation or support area for that application.
