Targeted niche forum VS collective forums

General chat online went like this:

BBS => Chat Rooms => Forums => Social Media => Apps

For you? I would focus on the crypto subforum. Crypto offers are being banned from a lot of ad networks. So if you can build an audience, you can sell advertising to those folks who can't buy it.

It's the only part that has any growth potential.

There is room in this world for both types of forums, general (multi-niche) and specific niche forums.

The reason most people coming to the Warrior Forum choose specific targeted niche forums is because that business model fits their profile and goal for a solo business without having to hire employees.

A multi-niche forum requires a lot more time, resources (money for promotion), and help in order to satisfy the demands of each niche. A solo operator typically can't effectively manage and care for the needs of many niches by him/herself. It should make sense that caring for one niche and serving all the like-minded people at the same time with every email, every content piece, every offer is well-suited to a one-person business.

Multi-niche forums, if you think about it, could be considered a collection of say, for example, 10 niche forums ... each one having a different audience, different needs, different expectations, etc. One person trying to care for ten different niches all at once is going to have a very difficult time.

Forums take a lot of work in the beginning. They don't typically run on auto-pilot by themselves. They require TLC, constant promotion, support and management, moderation, and "feeding." To try to care for 10 separate sub-forums under one forum roof is too much to ask one person to do if that forum is going to provide a quality experience for its members.

Anyone building a forum needs to go in with their eyes wide open because they take a concerted, long-term, consistent effort and they may not pay off until traction in the niche happens.

You mentioned companies like Microsoft or Forbes. Take a look at their SEC filings and check the number of employees they have.

Go back and look at their forums. Each forum will have one head honcho and multiple secondary people whose only business is managing/supporting that particular section.

You won't see the money guy writing about sports, or the sports guy doing stock picks.

That's why many forums (fora?) tend to revolve around a single niche. They were often started by one person, who stuck to something they knew and liked, and let things grow from there.

If you're going to keep spamming your forum link at least fix it so it's relevant to WF.

You'll never find a discussion about a Chevy or Ford on the CRV owners forum.

Any forum that is new at this point will struggle, unlike ever before. They are virtually all dying. Sorry, but it's the truth.

With that said, a niche is your best chance. Try to grow a core group of people (hopefully experts in the niche) and keep them happy. They can keep your forum alive and relatively healthy.

Successful folks specialize in 1 area because where your attention and energy goes, grows. Meaning if you target the niche, and learn it inside out, you gain authority and trust in that niche. Simple concept.

The world does not gravitate toward generalists though; too scatter brained, and they plum just don't become experts in 1 niche because their mind and energy is all over the place.

Go with a targeted niche that way you can hopefully attract some true experts on the topic. That is the reason most join forums to get true opinions from people who have experience. Without that you really won't draw much of an audience. People with a passing or general interest in a topic don't normally go out of there way to join a forum and post.
