What do I do with content website with 500+ articles

Hi Warriors,

Long time lurker here, but finally decided to post and ask for opinions. In 2012 I have created a simple WordPress website with 15 categories in health niche with total of ~500 articles. I have a main business of selling my own b2b software so it was an attempt something new in unfamiliar field of IM. What I did:

- Opened a ClickBank account and picked up 15 random subcats from Health category;
- For each subcat I did a keyword research and came up with 30-40 most searched keywords around it;
- Hired writers to write a short article relating to each keyword, 30-40 per subcategory.
- Posted it on WP with a set of cloaked CB links on the bottom of each page.
- Did some simple on page SEO with a related WP plugin, no promotion except directory submission.

Then I became too busy with my main business and literally forgot about the site. It did not have any traffic before 2014 and since then it started getting a small amount of visitors (about 900 uniques per month). Had a few sporradic sales but I invested 10x more on content alone.

So my question is: what can I do with this site? Pages offer some tips for readers and then I just say - try out these products and post a bunch of links. Promote each page separately? Looks like if I spend ~150 for a simple SEO package this will be a huge investment which I doubt will pay off with CB anytime. Thanks for all ideas!

    A couple ideas:
    • Flip the sites (https://flippa.com/)
    • Turn them into lead gen sites for local businesses
    • Start small with paid traffic to articles and retarget visitors with offers
    • Create a list of offers for the sites, start building a list and upsell converters

    That's great you have that kind of traffic to a website with thin content.

    You could easily be making around $900/mo or so if you were monetizing well the content.
    Now it's time to write reviews and link to them form the old content to see if they can rank.

    You can make Call To Actions telling visitors to read the reviews and you can easily offer incentives from the old content to help people give you their email addresses.

    However, if you don't have time to work on your website, you just can populate it with Google ads and make some money after which you can flip it for big $$$.

    Remember, every successful internet marketer has an email list and is ready to monetize it except Amazon sellers and that's why selling on Amazon is so great due to its simplicity.

    IMO, what you do with the site will depend upon what goals you have in Internet marketing. Why are you here? Are you looking to make some supplementary income? Do you want to be a full time marketer? Are you trying to become a super affiliate? Do you want to become an authority in the health marketplace? Just what are you trying to accomplish online? It's not clear to me ... but more importantly ... it may not be clear to you either.

    The answer to that question will help clarify what you ought to do with your web site. Anyone can buy 500 articles. Without consistent targeted traffic (I don't think you have that since you said you have "15 random categories" of content), or consistent income generated at the site, your site is not worth much right now to a buyer. I'm not saying it can't become a valuable asset in the future.

    So the first order of business, IMO, is to decide your purpose, goal, and reason for being in this field (doing Internet marketing). Then you should be able to understand how your site either helps or hinders your goal for the future.

    Hi Steve,

    My main project occupies 90% of my time and effort, but I feel it will decline in a year or two due to market saturation. Right now I explore the ways to enter IM. This website was just a "mindless" attempt and of course nothing worked out.

    Next year I plan to jump into affiliate marketing. I have successfully brought my main website and about 10 satellites to rank very well on Google. That however was in 2008-2010 and I feel the game rules have changed. I just ordered a bunch of articles submissions and the sites pulled up on top pretty fast.

    But with this affiliate stuff things are much more complicated.

    What you do with the site depends on the quality of the content. If these are simply short articles offering the reader very little value, then I would scrap the site or sell the site for what you can get. You need good content to ensure you get quality traffic, gain ranking and make sales.

    It seems like there was some thought put into this site, but it was probably centered on SEO strategies used in 2012 when the site was created. Those strategies are mainly junk today.

    If you plan to keep the site, it may be worth having a writer go through and update the pages of content to make them far better than they currently are.

    Make people sign up your newsletter and start collecting their emails. You can now sell this database to a local doctor (skin specialist or dietitian)

    As you've probably heard a thousand times, the #1 asset is a subscriber list.

    So at this stage, the first thing I would do is get a pop up, a sidebar ad, and in content subscriber forms.

    Get this traffic turned into leads.

    Then you have options. You can sell it (for more than you could without a list)

    You could set up a series of weekly/ monthly emails promoting different health products.

    You can drive the traffic back to your blog and it will grow even bigger.
