Why would I pay for websites when I can do everything on a blog for free?

Owning a website gives you control over the content.

With a blog hosted on someone else's website, you have no control. They can shut down at any time.

For example, thousands of people used to post articles to Squidoo.com to get traffic from Google. Then one day the entire site shut down, and all that hard work went to waste.

You just answered me on your thread with this:

The other thing is yes the site is far from complete its a work in progress though I like to add to it bit by bit to let google know that its there and its active. So that this time next year

        So, this time next year.

I could understand IF you kept working on your WEBSITE with the idea it will get indexed and you'll have a lot of content there,

THIS TIME NEXT YEAR, not a bad plan.

NOW next day, you're thinking of ABANDONING your website for a FREE BLOG, on someone else beach, so when the sands shift and tide comes in, you'll be out of all that work and effort as has been pointed out to you with the Squidoo example

Free blogs today, may or may not be free tomorrow, and the content may, at some future time offend the owners and you are gone.

With your own website, you can (as I thought from your other post) control it and GROW it and get it ready for next year when it will be indexed, you'll have content, be getting more traffic...

Dude, what do you want? Really? Keep your website and put your nose to the grindstone and maybe, just maybe next year you'll be making the money you want to make. I don't think you want that, but, what I think doesn't reall;y matter, does it?

Stick with the website you spent all that TIME and effort making, if you want to add a blog to it, go ahead.

        GordonJ

  • Don't abandon your website. You can do a lot more when you have your own domain and website. You can blog on your own website and customize it to fit your ow needs.

When you blog on someone else's website, you're restricted by their rules and limited to their features. Once your business grows, it's be harder to move your traffic to your own site.

Thanks for the reply and for taking the time to list the differences between blogs and websites. I'v got a lot to consider.

Thanks for the response. The identity of my business. I'l keep that in mind as I do my revamp.

Thanks Ashwinsd. Its almost as if having a website is a part of building trust between business's. I wonder if the same bond can be achieved using a face book page? Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Interesting thought i'll have to ponder on that a little. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Thanks for your time Gordon J and putting forward some terrific points. I don't agree with everything however I acknowledge that my site is not complete and that while I want google to know its their the site is not ready for visitors and I shouldn't be directing traffic to a project that as yet has little value to offer.

I used the word Abandon to give the reader an emotional background and being at risk of lecturing should not be taken to seriously.

Other points I'm learning here are that blogs are sites that are owned by others and that my content can be monitored/controlled.

What do I want? I think we both know I cant answer that yet. However i'd like to take a rain check and maybe this time next year I can answer.

p.s. I look forward to our future correspondence.

wrcato2 thanks for the reply and taking time to share. I have a custom built site using html. It sounds like as long as your mindful of the rules when using blogger it is a positive experience.

I use blogger. I love it. I also have a domain name forward on my blog. I also own a few other domains and have HTML websites on them in different niches.
One strategy that I like to use has a really good resource on the HTML domain along with affiliate links attached to 'em and blog about relevant topics including a link to my property for more information. This is a really good strategy if you use WordPress.com as your blog platform instead of a self-hosted WP blog on your own domain.

I have been using blogger for the better part of 2 years and had no problems with being banned or anything of that sort but you do need to be mindful of their rules.

There's nothing wrong with a blog. It's a quick and easy way to get website development done. Most Wordpress installations are point-and-click. You dont have to stick with Blogger (google owned). Also, there's nothing wrong with a website. What's the problem with either of them if you're not making money anyway?

    Rockerjaw,

Whatever platform you choose is up to you. Free platforms often come with restrictions, sponsored advertising (not your own), and the uncertainty of the company behind the service. And yes, buyers are more likely to take you and your business seriously if you have your own hosted site and registered domain.

WordPress is often suggested if you want to blog. The advantages include fast, easy set up, millions of themes for every purpose (many free), great community of users if you need help, many free tutorials, and lots of plug-ins that will add functionality to your site.

Here's a secret: WordPress is a good choice for a web site even if you don't plan to blog! It's a nice content management alternative that you can sell from and do just about anything else you want (membership site, directory site, consulting site, graphics/artwork site, etc). There are so many themes and plug-ins for Wordpress and you don't need to know HTML or other "technical" skills to be good at it!

Just one other observation about your posts in this thread. You don't need to take a year to do anything in online business. Get your site going, get some content on it, and set up your email list building system.

Don't wait to begin business until everything is perfect. Set a goal to open your site in two weeks - that's plenty of time to prepare to get started. Build a list, create products, begin affiliate marketing, or whatever you plan to do starting now. A year from now you'll be way ahead - time is a very precious asset you have.

    Good luck with your marketing,

    Steve

    Coming to blogs first.
Blogs: With blogs you get new content on a regular basis. Also, you get to read new things in a simpler language.

    Coming to websites.
Websites: Majorly the main content remains the same on a website. Also, you get a very formal and straight forward content here.

To conclude, if you like to stay in touch with new content, blogs can help you to a large extent instead of a website.

    Having your own website means:

    - You build an asset (if it's monetized properly its value increases over time)
    - You have more control over all the files/images/videos..basically all your hard work
    - You'll be seen with different eyes by your competitors, you can become an authority in your niche
    - You can sell it anytime you want
    - You can have a proffessional email : xyz@domain.com

  • Blogs were created to have a simple interface and to make regular posts. These posts are typically displayed as a listing in chronological order, with the newest content at the top of the page
A website in return can be anything. Anything on the internet presented in HTML/CSS or Java/Javascript/Python/Php, etc. comprises of a website.

All blogs are websites but not all websites are not blogs. This statement clearly explains that blog is a part of the website.

    Generally, websites have three types:-

    Informatic
    Static
    E-commerce

    Informatic -

In this type user only add data for information purpose of a company like an address of company, contact detail, about us for the company. You can't change information on regular basis. For example see Official Websites of any Company.

    Static Website -

In this type, the user can change the data when they want. Static website is free to edit like for example Facebook (social websites), Blog, photo sharing websites, personal websites etc.

    E-commerce -

We all know about this segment. Just see Flipkart, Amazon, or Snapdeal etc.

Website means digital identification of any company, community or organizer. So blog is also a part of a website.

Like the others have already mentioned, having your own website lets you have more control on what you want to do with it. With a blog, you're are limited to your host's restrictions.

But Steve B's right about Wordpress. It can work whether or not you want to blog or have a business website. It's quite user-friendly and provides you with a lot of options. Still outsourced to a developer to save me time though, but the point still stands.

Most beginners who want to start their own website want to keep the cost low which is understandable.
So you typically Google the term free website and find many companies offering free website hosting services for free.
The thought of having free web hosting and building your site without paying anything is tempting.

but the same if we thought about blogging, its free domain .we can learn many things if we are beginners. But after few times we turn are the business blog to websites.
Because blogs are somewhat not our domain.we are not an owner of that thing.
so, we cant' believe another's business.May be one day it shut down, our all hard work gone to waste.
so,people referred to buy there own domain.

I understand. There is some risk involved with blogging in that the control is in someone else's hands. While still a valuable avenue, websites however allow the owner to maintain control.

There is a basics difference between website and blog so you understood the benefits of having a website.

    Websites are:-

    • DBMS Data management.
    • Backend Needed.
    • Provide a Fully information about any organization and others(Ie. Colleges).
    • Websites basically Provide services and information about particular Product and services.
    • Websites need Hosting(Mostly).
    • Website use top level domains Ie:- .COM, .EDU, .ORG, .NET, .MIL(Military use), .CO(."Country level Domain").

    Blogs are:-
    • Static Design.
    • No database design.
    • No Sign Required.
    • no Backend needed.
    • Depends on a Specific purpose and subject.
    • blogs provide articles and contents.
    • Often all blogs are free hosted or free domain.

As it has been pointed out, you may have more control when you host your own site. It could also be added that building your own website may also mean that it does not have unnecessary coding. Thus it may load faster on mobile phones. In terms of customization too, you may have more freedom as far as what you want a site to be able to do, when you host it yourself.

well, Blog is also a good option for sure, but yes if you have your own websites, content should be yours and you have a full control on that. while it may be possible that in blog section, it should be some external sites. if there are any problem with that sites, definitely it affects your blog content too.

so i prefer websites over blog.

That is not the right question you should ask if I may be blunt.

The correct question you should ask is -

Why should I pay for domains and web hosting when I can do everything on a blog for free?

Like Blogger, Wordpress or Wix just to name a few examples.

    The question is like

Why should I pay for my office / shop / restaurant rent when I can have a free roadside stall?

    In the offline world?

If I may be sarcastic in a polite way?

    My answer is simple.

When you have a domain and hosting, you have the rights to own your website in terms of creating how you want your site or blog to look, adding /editing / updating content and most importantly be able to send your subscribers and customers fresh content from time to time.

Whereas if you have a free one, you might never know that Google or even Wordpress will remove if they see your content as not being in their best interest as well as the interest of other searchers and users.

Free blogging platforms are garbage. You have no control at all and could lose everything in a blink of an eye.

Why wouldn't you pay for your own website? Are you really that cheap that you can't afford $10 for a domain and a few bucks a month for hosting?

IMHO, if you won't pay for a domain and hosting, whatever you're working on, you either think will fail or you're just not that seriously committed to it.

And it's not just about control. Blogging,/content marketing is an essential part of SEO these days. Having a big website with constantly updated posts will transfer value to your domain directly - something that won't happen if you're bloggin on open platforms like Wordpress or Blogger

You can integrate your blog into your website. Having a website gives you control and the fear of the site getting shut down isn't there.

These are five ways you can identify a 'Blog' when compared to any website found online.
    * a Blog provides a Commenting System
    * a Blog offers a subscription system to send free email newsletters to readers.
    * a rticles inside a Blog are organized through categories and tags.
    * a rticles in a Blog appear in reverse-chronological order, latest to oldest.
    * a Blog is managed by an individual author or a team of authors often called the editorial board.

last word, you need the both. Making money online is not necessarily easier with one or the other.
whether you choose a blog or a website, you still have to learn how to generate targeted traffic or you won't make anything... period.
the reason I say this is because blogs are typically easier and cheaper to setup than websites. and because of this, people often run to create a blog and then later find out it's not always the best approach for their needs.
so make sure you read this page so you choose the option that's best for you.

    Good Luck!

It seems no one has mentioned you can have a static website that includes a blog and also various landing and sales pages and more.

A website is a place you can visit online with a domain and allows you to view the content but that could be a specific one. On the other side, the blog would also be containing the content but it is created to have a simple interface and regular posts. These posts will be displayed in an order, with the new content coming at the top.
So, obviously one can have a website therein including a blog section, giving you an option to control the content and have more options to do the changes.

Blog is a good option and almost free of charge, cost reduction, easy to customize, fast and reliable,... But to do more, you need websites. With websites you can do much-much- and much more than you can with blog! I see both of them are great their ways as mentioned.
I hope you can make a good choice that makes you happy with.

Never rely on sites owned by somebody else. They can shut down your site any time simply because they don't like your content. Always invest in a domain name and in your own blog/wwebsite.

Now, whether you should go for a blog or website depends on your business model, although any website should have a blog as well.

Well, a blog will allow you to build trust with your visitors, which is something difficult to get with just a website.

For me owning a Website is more powerful over a free blog site because in a owned website you have the power to decide which goes where and be able to control the content, placing, and even the ads you can place on, on the other hand blogs are free but you can only do minimum revision and your site might not look what you've wanted it to be.

Every blog is a website but not every website is a blog.

On your website you are your own God. do what you want where you want and how you want it. And you can also do built-in mail mail. But if you have a blog, you will not be able to control all your content.

That is one of the more silly things I have ever heard. Just what are you basing that belief, on? A blog is nothing more than a type of website. Outside of 'comments,' which you can block, you are totally in control of your content.
