Ten Phrases Every Marketer Needs to Know

I'm going to give you ten statements of advice (recommendations, suggestions, reviews, endorsements, etc). I want you to tell me which (if any) are positive, and which (if any) are negative. Which of these statements would you want used in promotion of you, your product, or service?

1. "I can't recommend this software too highly"

2. "This is not your normal everyday training"

3. "I simply can't say enough good things about him or his company"

4. "Once you get this system to work for you it's all business"

5. "You won't find another business coach like her"

6. "I recommend him and his company with no qualifications whatsoever"

7. "His writing skills are nothing which should be laughed at"

8. "What his product did for me was only a fraction of what it is supposed to do"

9. "This service won't do anything which will lower your high regard for it"

10. "As a programmer, John was always high in my opinion"

Do you understand what I'm trying to get at?

Steve, without context, all of these seemingly positive statements could be given a negative spin...

I can't recommend it at all, actually.

    It isn't even that good.

I wish I had some good things to say, but I don't.

Getting it to work is where everybody has trouble.

They'd be even better if they had any qualifications.

Cried over, maybe, but it's no laughing matter.

Too bad it didn't do everything it's supposed to do.

Yes, doing nothing will definitely lower my regard for it.

Always high is never a good thing.

Great post. Thanks Steve. I would add another one:

Plain and simple I would not want any of them in any promotion. Any sentence would be enough to have a buyer walk away from the offer. Some of the statements with a minor tweak could easily be turned into a positive statement. Steve question are you pointing out flaws you see in everyday marketing or showing examples of weak copy.

If I could edit them all, then I would be happy. If not, then I would hit the delete button while forgetting to save the copy beforehand.

    Remember this one?

    It's time to eat Grandma.
    It's time to eat, Grandma.

    Which would you choose?

That is a loaded question, I'm sure most people would chose the bottom comment. But don't ask someone forced into cannibalism

How many ways can this sentence be interpreted? [think phrasing, cadence, inflection] [It has at least 6 or 7 meanings he he]

'She said she didn't kill her husband'

Hmm, I might be wrong at what you are getting at, but could be the use of negative words such as "can't" actually be what I call the killwords (keywords) that convey a sense of negativity to the prospective buyer?

Interesting Steve. I focused on the referral aspect of every statement. 1 person saying something about a business or entrepreneur, and how things take off like wildfire or backfire based on the job you do and how it impacts your business. Thanks for sharing.
