Video Making and editing question

Hi!

I'll keep this short and blunt.

I have snagit. (screen capture and video recorder). I will download the camtasia trial if i have to.

I'm about to start making videos. I am wondering is it possible to record a video without sound and go back later and record sound over the top?

thanks.

Yes you can do this with camtasia.

Sony Vegas is also a great product for this kind of stuff.

    Yup, you can do that.
    No problem at all.

Yes, and you may want to take a quick look at audacity which is free.

It is just for audio. Might be overkill, but good to know the option exists.

awesome. Is it hard adding the audio or is it just a matter of playing video and hit a button to record voice/audio and just (in my case) talk?

Unless they've recently changed it, Snagit can not record video - only still images. Camtasia can do what you want though, as can many other video capture apps out there.

    thanks.
That's affirmative. Just about any editing platform will allow you to do this.
There can be an advantage to this method way too.
What if your video is designed to be multilingual or what if you had a hideous sound issues in the room where your video is being recorded.

Solution: Move on with the video production and lay the audio tracks down later. Just make sure to talk yourself through the video for the audience anyway and not move at an abnormally lightening fast or snail's pace.

I use Sony Vegas (cheap) for video, Audacity (free) for audio, and Camstudio (free) for screen capture. I capture everything using Camstudio, then upload the video into Vegas to edit down and cut out all my goofs.

If you want to see a sample created exactly that way, check this free video from my web site:

If you are using Camtasia it will prompt you to ask if you want to record audio. It will be unchecked by default.

Yes, its a good idea to do the screen capture first and add audio track later. As the OP said you can also use Audacity and convert the .ogg file in to MP3 by applying the LAME coder(available on audacity website) then you can import that audio file in camtasia . Once you see that audio file drag and drop it at the beginning of the video. Hope this helps.

For those that are using OS X You can do this with IMovie 08

Import the video or open it in imovie

Open up the Sound and SFX window via the window menu and drop the proper file on to the top window and then publish

    Thanks everyone.

I downloaded camtasia studio yesterday. (30 day trial). My computer just meets the spec requirements. I did a test run just trying to record desktop(opening browser etc) but it lagged heaps for me.
Vegas movie studio HD is pretty cheap at $39usd (about 42 in aud)..
Looks good too. I just hope it wont lag my laptop. I guess worst case i'll have to use the desktop.

Yea i was considering i'd have to do that. I'll be writing out a rough video/speech plan first.

once again thankyou for your replies.
