What problems can software solve for you?

Hello!

My name is Christopher Franklin and I am a software developer with an interest in online marketing. I recently spent 2 years running an affiliate marketing blog about a topic I am interested in (Lego's!) and have decided that running a blog is not the right job for me. I want to move back into software development and find a fun project to work on in the marketing space.

Which brings me to the topic at hand. I am hoping to find some inspiration for a new project here. Are there any problems you wish you had a piece of software to solve for you? Are there any tasks you consider tedious and wish you could automate? Or does the current software you use not do what you really want it to do? If you have any of these problems (or anything else really!) drop a line in here and I will see if I can build a solution to make your life easier!

    People in the industry call it "market research." You go online and look for groups of people who have similar problems, challenges, and desires. You spend time learning what they are looking for and what they will buy. You assess the competition and see if there are unmet "wants" or gaps in the products and services currently available or if you can provide a solution better than the competition.

    When you find large groups of people asking for the same solutions, you have identified a viable niche. Be careful about assuming that one person's desires are representative of many others as that is not always the case. When one person shares his desires, you have nothing more than a custom job. When many people respond similarly, you have a potential audience for a particular product that can be sold over and over and over again.

    Wearing the developer hat will get you the software ... wearing the market hat is what brings in the money (sales).

    You already know this, right? But then there are lots of other new marketers that need to learn this lesson.

      Hi Steve,

      Thanks for the reply! I guess I wasn't very clear with my request. This is actually me trying to do Market Research on Marketers

      I have written a number of tools to automate some of the tasks that I did on a daily basis when running my marketing blog, but I wanted to see if there were bigger areas to tackle that actual full-time marketers are experiencing. Make sense?

    Perfectly clear. This has been tried before. If you search you will find them.

    You spend time learning what they are looking for and what they will buy.
    This is the step you are trying to avoid. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of actual "full-time marketers" on this forum. They will give you replies similar to Steve's.

    I have a great example: Today I was notified of an affiliate opportunity for a plugin that makes WP sites GDPR compliant. The regulation takes effect 5-25. The software launches on Sunday 5-20. Do you see where I'm going here?

    I suggest looking forward. I think of it as "Looking around corners," or "Getting out in front of things."

    Solve a problem people don't know they have, yet. You do that by being better informed than your target audience.
