Duplicate Content Question - I PROMISE It's Not The Usual Dup Question

Let's say I wanted to make a site with cooking recipes on it.

Chances are pretty good that some of the same recipes will be on other sites around the internet. I hear it's a pretty big place.

What happens in regards to my content in this scenario? Is it considered duplicate? Does the percentage of duplicate content on the page come into play?

Will the site rank high ASSUMING the competition is weak and I have done the necessary SEO and gotten enough backlinks? Or is the duplicate content going to be an issue?

Thanks.

    Hi

There's been various debates and confusion over the duplicate content issue.

Chances are pretty good that some of the same recipes will be on other sites around the internet. I hear it's a pretty big place.
What happens in regards to my content in this scenario?
It will not affect your site. If you have a recipe for say, low fat chicken stir fry and you have it listed in 2 categories such as low fat recipes and chicken recipes, then it will be dulpicate. However that doesn't mean you will be penalised for it, it simply means that Google will only count one of those entries for SEO purposes.
With the other factors taken into account that you have mentioned then the dulicate issue is not going to be an issue.

Try to make your recipes a bit different from every other recipe on the net. For instance, instead of simply adding a recipe put a bit of a twist on it, or make suggestions of what it could be served with, ways to make it healthier, tips for making it quicker to cook, cheaper etc. Add something of value so people will come back to your site rather than go to other sites.

    Hope that helps.

    Mary

Thanks for your post, but I am not referring to the same content listed on 2 different parts of my site. I mean my site and ANOTHER site on the internet.

And the recipes thing was an example. Not the niche I am going after, just the same scenario I will encounter. Hard to understand without knowing the niche, but I can NOT change some of the content.

I am assuming you used the 'recipes' example because you will have 'pieces' of duplicate content on your site.

Go to Google and search for any medical condition. What you will find is that site after site will have the same information. It will be presented differently and formatted differently, but the 'meat' of the pages contains identical content. These sites are likely taking public domain material from .gov sites and reprinting it on their own sites.

As has been stated many times by Warriors that have tested this extensively, there is no duplicate content penalty (at least not the duplicate content you are concerned with). Several of my sites have duplicate content in that I have product descriptions taken from manufacturers sites and reproduced on my sites. They all have good ranking and have for over a year now.

    Google discusses this here:
Duplicate content - Webmasters/Site owners Help

While this article pertains primarily to duplicate content across your own site, you can still get an idea of what Google is looking for when duplicate content is concerned.

I know the duplicate content is not what everyone thinks it is. So yes, I was referring to it as you described, as "pieces".

      Thank you for your post.

Do a search for the lyrics to a popular song and you'll find the answer to your question.

          Men Without Hats.

I saw you post it before. But I'm still not sure I understand it 100%.

"We can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind" - Could be interpreted as "yes, I can post what I want if I want to and leave others behind" which to me, means YES, I am fine in this situation. Or, I may have interpreted it wrong.

          Or...

"Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance well they're no friends of mine" - That could mean, well, I don't know how that could fit in here.
